Pelvic floor dyssynergia

Just read a worrying story in the Daily Mail about a young girl who developed Pelvic Floor Dyssynergia after taking Amitiptyline for regular migraine😱. Whilst I was told that Ami can cause constipation I was un-aware of any more serious conditions. I have noticed my 'bowel habits' change considerably, and even on a small 30mg dose of Ami nightly, I have to take Senna and Lactulose to get things going at all! What do other people do🤔 - this can't be good for our bodies long term?

Can you say more or is it too personal? What dose were you on and what treatment are you having, are you recovering? X

Hi Katherine I too take 35mg Ami nightly for the prevention of migraine. My bowel habits are changed, tho not as extremely as yours. However I had my gall bladder removed at the beginning of the year and was told that could v likely cause a difference. I wouldn't panic at this point as no one else seems to have reported the same problem.

I guess different people react differently. While it is true that amitriptyline or any other tricyclic antidepressant cannot be good for us if used for a long time, we need to ask ourselves what is the alternative ! I have been using amitriptyline for 6 years, I cannot say it helps migraine directly (for me) but it certainly helps to manage IBS which in turns helps reducing the severity of migraine. In my case amitriptyline has not caused any alarming problem but it does give me dry mouth, increased sweating, mild disorientation and strange blood pressure ! I often get fairly high diastolic and very low systolic BP. Luckily amitriptyline has not given me Pelvic Floor or similar problem.

I have an ambition to come off from all medicines including amitriptyline, currently on 10mg daily (used to be 60mg, then 50mg and later 25mg).

Ive been taking Amitriptyline for about 8 years at 175mg. I take it for migraine but just like troy04 it doesn't help them but does help my IBS and I can't sleep without it. It does raise my heart rate a lot. I didn't know it could make you sweat more which I find encouraging bc I sweat more than everyone else at the gym and have always wondered why, maybe its Amitriptyline!

I read the same article about the girl it was very disturbing. Everyone is different if you think you might be prone to that sort of side effect I would come off it. There are so many alternatives for migraine prevention why take the risk esp. If it's already possibly affected your gallbladder? I presume you have discussed alternatives? It would seem very remiss of your doctors to not have done so already esp if they suspect amitriptyline might be the culprit. I've been on over 13 different drugs for migraine so I know there are other options....
