Curtis33 pain behind the eye is associated with cluster headaches. I work with many cluster headache patients. The best thing to apply is oxygen on first discovery. It can reduce the length of time and the intensity. Good luck!

How do you get prescribed oxygen? I have tried but docs refuse. My cluster headaches can last up to 5/6 days a week but oxygen isn't an option according to them..so frustrating

In the US doctors normally know that oxygen is very helpful for cluster headaches but if your doctor calls this a migraine, he/she will not understand it. You may want to show this to your doctor: migraine-book.com/2016/06/2... to identify cluster. Also, an article here: mhni.com/headache-pain-faq/... another one more general: headaches.org/2007/10/25/ox... and a link to an academic article (not open access but your doctor should have access to it): cep.sagepub.com/content/ear... so show all these.

I specialize in migraines and while don't use oxygen for my migraineurs (it does not seem to help), I do have a book on how to prevent and abort migraines: amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c... (this is both paperback and e-book and on amazon but it is available everywhere else)

Good luck!

Thank you. Just another quick question I have been told to take 400mg of vitamin B but on my 'high strength' casuals it say only take one a day and they are only 50mg. It would mean me taking 8 a day. Any advice. Thanks

babs1234 vitamin B complex is not helpful for 2 reasons:

1) not everyone needs every single B vitamin so a blood test would be helpful. Most migraineurs only need B12 (this is my findings based on blood tests of thousands of migraineurs).

2) B12 (and other B vitamins) do not absorb from pills (they get destroyed in the stomach) so if you want to take B take sublingual (watch for the awful sugar substitutes!) or get monthly shots--for that a doctor needs to approve and order.

I would not take a high dose unless you need it so a blood test is essential. If you are low, you may need the liquid sublingual, that is 2500 mcg (2.5 mg) but all of it will absorb. 2500 mcg (2.5 mg) is already several times the dose f what is needed by the body so you need not take that every day--B12 has a half-life of 6-10 days so max twice a week. If you take pills, and they don't absorb, you can take as much as you want. Your urine will be expensive neon yellow but it will not actually help you. Note: the 50 mg is way higher than what you need so whoever told you 400 mg did not know what he/she was talking about.

Finally, as a separate point, grains inhibit protein synthesis, which means they block the absorption of nutrients from food. If you eat plenty of meat and are B12 deficient, you should stop eating grains. That is not an easy thing because grains release morphine in the brain and so we all are addicted to grains, but once you stop grains for 2-6 months, your vitamins and minerals will suddenly absorb. :)

However, if you are a vegetarian or vegan, you must take B12 for sure since that can only be found in meat.

Wow. Thanks I am taking vitamin B 12 but was told I should be taking Vitamin B 2. Sorry that was meant to be in my first post not just vitamin B. So now I am taking vitamin B 2, Vitamin B 12, feverfrew, magnesium citrate and co-eQ10. For migraine. When you google B2 for migraines it says take at least 400 mg. that's a far higher dose than is advised. I am a vegetarian so maybe the Vitamin B 12 is needed. I have spent so much in the past couple of years from supplement to Accupunture and have now bought a Chi machine. Very reluctant to take my sumatriptan as I find although they help initially the headaches always seem to come back with avengence thanks so much for your help and advice.

So am I wasting my time taking B12 in tablet form?

MigraineDoctor profile image
MigraineDoctor in reply to babs1234

Yeah babs1234 and the B2 as well since so far I have not found a single migraineur low in B2. That is an old assumption. Also herbs can cause more trouble than benefit. It would help you to read some of the articles that I published (both academic and blog on a science blog where I am a science blogger) that explain migraine so you can see what it is caused by. I agree to be reluctant about any triptan since they cause high BP, rebound migraine, diarrhea, and a host of other goodies. Once you understand the reason for your migraines, you can actually prevent them without any herbs or drugs. :) The best place to start is by joining my migraine FB group if you don't mind participating, which is here: facebook.com/groups/2191824...

or if you wish not participating, read the articles here (starting with the older ones and read to newer ones): hormonesmatter.com/author/a...

and 2 of my academic articles that are easy read and open access:

Hi Curtis33 . You are not alone! I am sorry that you too have to live with pain :( My migraines have become chronic (i.e. daily) over last few years, and the pain always starts in my right eye...deep into eye and skull behind eye. Even after severe pain subsides, the eye often remains tender to move/touch with stabbing residual pain for a week or so. I have been told that eye pain is common with a lot of migraineurs. I often use an ice pad over my eye and usually do my best to avoid painkillers.... Most of them don't touch the pain anyway! After 6 years I have no cure.... Tried every preventative drug given, also physio, acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractors etc. Now, I have found a kind of peace in accepting the fact that my old life is gone. I have to do the best with where I am ....and I fight still, but in a different way now. It is a hard struggle. I meditate and hang on to any good experiences that I can. Having a place to talk to people who know what chronic pain is, and does to a person helps me a lot. I hope it will help you. I wish you well. Take care of yourself.

I have this: it moves from side to side as well. I've got it now (although diminished) and had it since Sunday (now Thursday). Although the pain is behind the eye (and sometimes also in the temple and base of skull), I've found there's a link with my ears. My ear canals block up every few weeks, sometimes with infection/inflammation/tinnitus, and that's when I get the daily nagging/throbbing/pressure headache behind one eye (I get other migraines as well - this is different).

After syringing/treatment of the infection/inflammation I can be headache free for two-three weeks. Nobody believes there is a link however, or that I'm getting different types of headache, and I saw an ENT specialist who told me my ear canals are 'normal' and that he had not heard of a link between ear problems and migraine.

As far as pain relief goes, nothing works, but applying ice to the side of my head and forehead helps temporarily.

I'd be interested in MigraineDoctor 's opinion.

Frodo it sounds like you have a combination of cluster that initiates otehr things. There is a definite link in that when you get a migraine, one of the first signs (that people miss and doctors are not familiar with). You clusters are likely independent from the ear and sinus but the migraines are not. In fact, many of the migraineurs I treat seem to suffer sinus infections quite a bit because one does not think of a sinus appearance as a prodrome to a migraine but it can be. It would benefit you if you used a saline jet spray--not netti pot, which is not sterile and does not go deep, and not just a small squeeze bottle of saline but there are canisters of saline spray with large jet heads (they can be removed to sterilize) and they spray deep. So hand your head as low as you can without much pain and spray into one nostril at the time until it is pretty full, then sort of swoosh your head to get the liquid sort of soften everything (you may have to repeat this a few times) and then blow you nose over the sink (you will be dripping!). I have been using this for at least 10 years (I am a migraineur too!) and have once even managed to clear an ear infection this way as well.

In terms of migraines, I can help. Visit: stantonmigraineprotocol.com/ for more info. Clusters are not fully resolved by what I can offer but do help. I have a few patients with clusters and they tell I am helping them (other than the oxygen).

Good luck!

Hi all 😆 i wake with pain behind both eye's and the back of my head everyday ( for 21mths) if i don't jump out of bed immediately i get a full blown migraine. Sleep for 4/5 hrs max but totally broken up.

I use ice on my forehead and back of head, avoid meds as much as possible. Chiropractic, physiotherapy , indian head massage and meditation are my tools.

Always have background headache which escalate to migraine daily.

Diagnosed with hemacrania continua but don't believe this is correct, max fac specialist confirmed no cartilage on left side of jaw and diagnosed TMJD. Had athrosentisis and now have locked jaw. Waiting on oral surgeon to decide next move but cerezen is assisting in stability of my jaw for now.

So tired of this persistent daily pain 😢.

Take care all 😔

I'm going to check in with my doctor and get blood tests done to see if I'm deficient in any vitamins/minerals and I also just tried using magnesium oil which is still early days but I'll see if that makes a difference at all

Also going to see a naturopath which might be able to shed some light on things such as being tired when I have had adequate sleep (possible iron or magnesium deficiency?)
