Hi, I am relatively new to Migraine with headache I had 1st Aura in 2015, nothing major until 2023, then following cataract surgery, they have ramped up. I had 1st Headache last September, again March thus year, lasted a day then again April worse than before, lasted 5 days now latest was end of October 7 days of headache and 14 days of auras, loud ringing in ears still not gone, couldn't leave sunglasses off e ven indoors, and my balance was shot to pieces. I am taking Betahistine which has improved balance no end. The Zolmitriptan didn't work at all. GPs have been unhelpful to say the least. Good people I need to know if I can you take the triptans for more than 1 or 2 days and can you also take other painkillers as well. GPs are only interested in my blood pressure, of course it goes up, my head feels as though it is going to explode. I have a machine at home so know it is not always high. Any advice most grateful, sorry it us long winded.

Hello, Yes you can take other painkillers with triptans, infact it's generally recommended bc it can make them work better. I take a triptan and Naproxen at the same time and Omeprazole to protect my stomach etc from the Naproxen. Triptans are not licenced for use in people over the age of 65 bc they can be dangerous if you have vascular conditions so I presume that's why keep looking at your blood pressure.

It might be worth checking with the GP why they didn't advise you to take another painkiller with the triptan just incase they think that's a bad idea though?

I would contact the ophthalmologist that did your cataract surgery and ask them to check your lenses. I started taking propranolol hydrochloride earlier this year and that has helped my migraines so much. I also take sumatriptan when I get one. The propranolol has also reduced my blood pressure too which they said was a little high for my age.

Yes you're right I must contact opticians next, as light definitely plays a big part. This last 7 day migraine got me hospitalised overnight, and I had to wear sunglasses in there, looked like some old aged pop star! I take propanalol and hospital started me on Candesartan so will see how that goes. Thank you for your reply.
