Request for Information: Temporary Effects in the First Weeks After Recovery from Meningitis and Hospital Discharge in Infants

Greetings,

I hope this message finds you well. I would like to share a recent experience regarding my 7-month-old son and seek any information or insights you may have.

My 7-month-old son had a fever, and after giving him fever-reducing medication, his temperature decreased, but he began groaning as if he had a headache. I immediately called an ambulance, and he was taken to the hospital, where he experienced a seizure. The doctor immediately administered meningitis antibiotics. The next day, he was admitted to intensive care for a week, followed by a transfer to the general ward for 12 days.

He has since recovered, and we were discharged from the hospital. However, we’ve noticed that he yawns frequently, sleeps a lot, lacks attentiveness, and is often irritable. We are currently in the first week after being discharged, and we are very concerned.

If anyone has additional information about temporary aftereffects following a hospital stay, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, and may you be protected from all harm.

hi I’ve not had a child with meningitis but I did have it myself last year but I think it would be the same, very tired frequent headaches body aches and pains. I ended up deaf in one ear so I would strongly recommend getting his hearing tested and his eyesight checked as mine was also affected. I was told that it would take months for me to feel normal it is a brain injury and everybody is different and unfortunately not enough is known about it in the medical world. I was told to rest rest and more rest and slowly started to feel better but it’s a long road. I was hospitalised for 3 weeks then sent home I could barely walk and had very bad headaches and balance issues.

I really hope your son is one of the lucky ones who don’t suffer any after effects from meningitis but check out Meningitis Now’s website as they have lots of information about child meningitis and can help you with understanding what has happened.

Hope this helps

Ruth
