Trying my best to keep going

words can’t describe the ups and downs of my journey since meningitis

I had to leave my uni course, I moved back to hometown, I was working in completely new sector, found a spiritual community, various symptoms, moved back to uni then COVID hit, now 2 years of settling im beginning to rebuild my life again

I still get psychological issues, particularly dissociative disorder from all of the stress. The symptoms are really weird :

feeling disconnected from yourself and the world around you

forgetting about certain time periods, events and personal information

feeling uncertain about who you are

having multiple distinct identities

feeling little or no physical pain

Anyway, I’m beginning to feel there is hope for the future thanks to supportive family, Meningitis Now, psychotherapy, my own dedication to my self and my desires, spiritual community and the love and kindness that I receive.

I’m still working with a psychotherapist but I’m hoping we can begin to find a future for myself and a new beginning.

Apparently dissociation is a natural response to trauma and can be easily overcome through therapy long-term. I’m dedicated to keep growing, healing and finding my way- despite the constant feeling of being lost and work on myself.

I’m one of the lucky ones. Blessing to you all and I send loving kindness.

No doubt we all have different side effects, damage, etc. I somewhat feel disconnected as cryptococcal meningitis left me permanently profoundly deaf, but I accepted it as my vision wasn't affected. It caused far more physical than mental damage, but I won't let it drag me down the least bit. Hang in there and figure out your new normal and don't dwell on what has been lost.
