My husband has streptococcal meningitis and has memory and processing issues. He is still in hospital on antibiotics for the bacterial infection but I am wondering whether he needs to be challenging his brain as much as possible to try to get a better outcome. Has anyone got experience with this who can help please? Thanks so much
Brain recovery: My husband has... - Meningitis Now
Brain recovery
Hello, I had TB meningitis in 2008 and was in hospital for 3-4 months. I returned to work 12 weeks after being discharged and experienced the symptoms that your husband has. Although I took I’ll health retirement from my management job, I have kept my brain moving through word games on my phone, in order to keep my cognition from rusting up.
I recently returned to work 14 years after my meningitis at a peer level
Hello Anzabella, sorry to read about your husband. It is early days in his recovery and he will need time and rest. If you live in the UK, we can provide information and support through our helpline: 0808 80 10 388 (UK only) or by email: helpline@meningitisnow.org Best wishes, Claire
I had the same problem and it took a few months for my brain not to get tired. It sounds weird but I'm sure that's what he's experiencing. He will gradually get to where he doesn't have to stop doing whatever and can continue on with his activities. I noticed it much more when I had to focus.
Hi ,My son had meningococcal meningitis and then viral encephalitis several years later. The brain injuries took a long time to improve and in retrospect were still improving 2 years on. The most important things early on were rest and avoiding overstimulation rather than trying to challenge him although everyone is so desperately wanting to help him recover. Wishing you and your family all the best.

During the first days and even weeks, everyone is different, it is important to rest your brain. As time goes on you can start adding in quiet brain games. Word search, etc. I am an avid reader and simply could not read books for a couple months. During my initial healing I slept and quietly watched 15 seasons of Hells Kitchen. If I got overstimulated I felt “weird”. Still do three years later at times.
