Fevers post Pneumococcal Meningitis - any advice?

Twinningiswinning profile image

My 17 month-old daughter was diagnosed with pneumococcal meningitis 3 weeks ago and was discharged from hospital a few days ago. She appears to have made a full recovery which we’re so thankful for, but for the past 10 days she has spiked a high temperature (38c) and had vomiting. The doctors did 3 CT scans of her brain and 1 MRI and all look normal, so they think it’s just part of the recovery and were happy to let her go home.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar? And if so, how long did it take to go away completely?

TIA

Hi I had BM about 2 years ago. The fevers ran for about 6 weeks. Had to change my pyjamas and bed sheets twice a night. It gradually got less and less. It takes time and she will get better.

Thank you for taking the time to reply - I’m sorry you had fevers for 6 weeks afterwards but it’s really helpful to know that the headaches/fevers can last that long afterwards. Hopefully hers will gradually stop like yours did 🤞🏻

Hi..

My daughter was diagnosed with bm at her 40 days. She stayed in hospital for 3 months. when discharged,my baby had vomiting and she came to a point where she lost weight. Also, every time she was a bit unwell she had high temperature. Now she is almost 3 years old and still, every time she gets sick she has really high temperatures.

Observe every aspect of your child's behaviour. Not every fever means bm. Try to remember that.. i still keep trying!

I hope your child gets stronger day by day and be as lucky as my little girl.

I totally understand what you are saying we are now three weeks after discharge and like you say seems to have made a full recovery. But what I have noticed are temperatures after coming home and to top it all he’s now picked up a cough and runny nose. He’s sensitive to light sometimes and I carry round sunglasses just in case. Headaches are another problem he as mentioned as well Sending you prayers and hugs
