Just had a question for anyone who has suffered from bacterial menigitis. Has anyone had problems with weight gain after recovering from this? I was in the hospital 2 months ago and almost didnt make it. Im doing a lot better with everything besides the weight gain. And im not gaining weight because of any medicine because i dont take any kind of medicine. Ive never had a problem with my weight until after my sickness with menigitis. Its very frustrating:(

Hi, yes i can relate unfortunately! Although in my case its probably because im still nowhere near as active as i was (BM in feb 18 and still only doing 3 or 4 hrs once or twice a week in work). My GP (who i have to say has been really helpful through my recovery- thats not to say i havent experienced the opposite aswell with other professionals!) has said from the start how a healthy diet is essential in helping my brain to recover. It sounds like common sense yet somehow ive managed to put the 3 and a half stone i lost whilst in a coma, back on!!

Im really hoping that as my hours in work increase, my waistline will decrease!

Best of luck

Mark

Morning, thanks for sharing your story.

I too had bacterial meningitis which started February this year. Whilst in hospital I lost quiet a bit of weight, but after leaving hospital I put more weight than I had back on.

I put this down to not feeling like doing any exercise and not being able too , I found it all very frustrating. I was taking loads of medication at home and in hospital just to get through the day. I was an active 42 year old firefighter before being ill. Couldn’t believe what it had done to me.

It’s still early days for you, but my advise would be too let your recovery take its time. I didn’t and set myself back.

I recently returned to work around 3 weeks ago, which has helped me more to feel better.

I wish you a good recovery

Andrew

Yes - I agree with what the others say, plus something else to consider. About 2 years after my recovery from bacterial meningitis, I had hashimotos and underactive thyroid picked up in a work medical which is basically an autoimmune disease. I think that all of the antibiotics I was on to cure the meningitis just ripped my body to shreds on the inside and triggered this. So I am now much heavier than before meningitis and struggle to get it off with the underactive thyroid. I also now have adrenal fatigue too, from the stress of the recovery on my body which makes getting up the energy to exercise a challenge — which is horrible as I used to be a very fit and active person. I do just take each day as it comes and know that in time things will improve. I do believe a healthy balanced diet are important, my Drs said that to me to ensure you get all your nutrients in. I take a lot of supplements also to ensure I’m not missing out.
