How long will it take my baby boy to get back on track?

My son was 2 months premature and contracted viral meningitis at 6 weeks. He made what we hope is a full recovery though at this age how do you know? I compare his motor skills to other premature children his age and he is behind. He has trouble holding his head up, he cannot sit up on his own or even assisted for very long. He smiles and coos and can grasp objects in his hand if you put them there. He is in 0-3 months clothing. He is 8 months old.

Is it normal for meningitis to affect growth/development in this way? When can he hope to get back on track and what can I do to help? Thank you for any/all guidance.
