supported living and benefit entitlement

Hi

My son Paul who has SLD and registered blind has moved into supported living a few days ago I have reported change of circumstances to PIP UC and motability I since found out that it is possible that the care component of PIP could be taken away but my son can still keep the car. I have been told that if you are in a care home that the care component will be taken away but is this true if you live in supported living . I am awaiting a letter from DWP as they stated they will be investigating on the funding for his care

Has anyone experienced this and what advice can you give me to ensure I get the correct information and benefits from various organisations just such a scary time thank you so much

HiIs your son health funded or social care funded?

My daughter has been health funded for 7 years she is age 29 so stopped paying the contribution then when she was still at home. That continued when moved into SL in August 22. You are correct mobility component won't be affected and can keep car. We prefer to keep the allowance and Health funding also provide an allowance to enable carers to take her out in their cars which will pay petrol costs.

If he pays towards care that will be continued but he will be reassessed.

He will get his rent paid usually through UC and council tax should be exempt, but have to apply for both which can take time.

Hi, my son is in Residential and he has kept his car but loses PIP care and most of his UC. Just leaves him with £30.15 to live off. I believe that support living is a better option as you keep all your benefits but you do still have to contribute to the care package. However you are able to submit DRE ( disability related expenditure) which can bring that cost down.

My son moved into supported living last year. He receives DLA and ESA I did not inform them I still receive his benefits and pay his bills. He pays no rent, pays a share of utilities as he shares with two others, he pays for use of a car and petrol , and pays a contribution to SS towards his care. Depending on the set up where your son has moved to will determine what he pays out. EG is he on his own with care ? Or sharing a house. But you don’t have the benefits taken if it’s supported living , you do if it’s a care home and the fees are set .

I would recommend getting advice from the welfare rights/benefits service from your local council. They have a lot of knowledge and can help make sure your son is getting all he is entitled to

in a residential home a person contributes all their benefits (bar the mobility component of PIP) towards their care - they are allowed to keep the personal expenses allowance which is currently just over £30 per week. In supported living a person keeps all their benefits as that is what they live on. They do have to make a contribution towards their social care package and possibly towards housing expenses not covered by housing benefit but the rest they keepy for their daily living expenses. a contribution towards social care can be quite a lot - up to around £90 but could be less. contrbution towards housing costs should be minimal - maybe £15-20 a week.
