Hello Readers

Please can anyone offer advice or experience in trying to buy a home via shared ownership & local authority ? What are the pro's & con's of doing this so that we can find a secure home for my daughter.

Thanks

Hi Cakes2695 , hopefully someone will be able to share their personal experience in answer to your question. This sounds like it could be a complicated one, so it might be worth talking to one of the advisers on Mencap's Learning Disability Helpline to see if they can offer any advice as well. You can reach them on 0808 808 1111 or by email on helpline@mencap.org.uk if you prefer.

We thought about purchasing a property for our son but it was complicated. A friend did it for her twin sons. She had to also set up a care agency and source staff. They borrowed on their own mortgage to buy the house. Once her sons’ had paid their client contribution they were left with so little she has to subsidise them every month.

We decided to go down the residential route with our son and spent a year looking and visiting places. We had help from our councils placement service. We settled on a beautiful place not too far from home. He moved in in September. We chose it as it’s quite secluded, has a community feel and is very safe. It’s very secure. He has 1:1 support for 20 hours a day and 2:1 support in the community. So far so good.
