Hello I am new to this group. We have a 12 year old foster son who has global delays and possible fetal drug alcohol syndrome. His behaviour is very erratic and unpredictable. He does not seem to have any empathy for anyone's feelings. He is behind at school and is hopefully going to be given a place in a special needs school soon! We are really struggling and any advice would be great, best wishes Linda

Global developer delay

There should be an educational psychologist at the school, there should also be a challenging community behaviour team in your area. There is also a charity for children with this issue out there as I’ve met them at an event I went to try doing a google search for this condition and see what comes up. The child’s disability team at social services may also be able to help you or your g p and the carers association there’s a few ideas that I can think of off the top of my head.
Hello and welcome
@Jofisher's reply is spot on. There should be local support for you - from the school, your local council and your foster son's GP.
Also, are you getting any ongoing help as part of your role as a foster parent?
A few other links you might find helpful-
- there is some information about global development delay here - mencap.org.uk/learning-disa...
- and also some about challenging behaviour here - mencap.org.uk/learning-disa...
This second link also suggest the Challenging behaviour foundation who are great.
We also had an expert event on this online community a while ago - healthunlocked.com/mencap/p... Yvonne, our expert, had some great ideas and advice that you might find helpful.
Best wishes
