I have just tried to order a repeat prescription for my sister who has learning disabilities. She asked me to phone for her on this occasion but she is able to use the telephone. However, my sister cannot use apps or email. I was told that the surgery no longer deals with repeat prescriptions via the telephone. I can email the request for my sister but I suggested to the surgery that their service was not accessible if one had to be able to use email or apps to order a prescription. I was told that people with learning disabilities can ask their carers or family members to do this for them. Does anyone else feel this is not an accessible service and that the surgery are not making reasonable adjustments, or am I being too sensitive?
Thanks

So what does a Person do who doesn’t have a person to help them. Interesting question maybe you should ask the Mencap helpline and see if they can look into this
For years our surgery has a system of logging on securely to order prescriptions. Works very well. My son does live with us but I could order his meds if he lived elsewhere. If it’s a prescription your sister has every month is it worth looking at the chemists who will deliver them for her. I think some of these can be set up so your sister wouldn’t need to do anything. ?
no you are not being sensitive .There should be exceptions for people with learning disabilities and older people who cant use computers or dont own one its ridiculous and discrimination
Absolutely agree with you and pogdog. Once you have it sorted, ask the surgery to put a ‘pop up’ note on her medical record saying that she can order her prescriptions by phone. This will then be visible to whichever receptionist subsequently takes her phone call.
No your not being sensitive. I think this is disgusting that they have even said that their carers or family members should do this for them. If you have no joy with any of the suggestions made on here, Would suggest emailing your MP
I think they should make reasonable adjustments - it wont be for that many people - my son has LD but can use the internet system they have - it will just be the few that can't. I would start by emailing the practice manager and asking them to make reasonable adjustment
Dear AllThank you for your helpful suggestions and support. Following a discussion with one of the managers, we have arranged for my sister to have a named contact in the office. My sister can speak to this individual directly to arrange repeat prescriptions and discuss any other issues she may have.
