Mild learning disabilities in young adults

My 24 year old Neice has 18q- chromosome abnormality, this presents with mild learning disabilities. She can drive and has a job but is becoming isolated from her friends and has never had a boyfriend, does anyone have suggestions or know or any communities with mild learning abnormalities or suggestions regarding dating/ socialising etc.

Many thanks

Hi,

Your niece has a good base with working and being able to drive, but we know there are lots of reasons that people are and become quite isolated and lonely?

You dont say what area she lives?

There has been quite a push over the last few years (certainly in Wales where I live/work) around Social Prescribing. Lots of authorities have created dedicated teams or enabled, supported other providers I.e charities to promote this, even GP's are beginning to do it.

Social Prescribing is where resources, groups, activities etc etc are sought/identified in the area that might be of interest to people. These can then be shared with people. It really can be surprising the amounts and types of things that are available locally, and I often wonder to myself 'how did I not know about that?' And as I said I work in Social Care.

As I mentioned, some authorities have set up dedicated teams, groups around this but can vary from area to area? There are sometimes websites too for example in Wales there is Dewis website.

My advice would be to contact the local authority and ask about it, if they do it they will know about it and point you in right direction, or a charity like Mind, British Red Cross etc who do this type of work in my area.

Hope your niece finds what she is looking for, I know it can be difficult and being socially isolated and lonely has been identified to have a massive negative impact on people's well-being.

Good luck

Paul
