Hi,

Student speech and language therapist here. I was just wondering whether anybody is aware of any UK policy relating to communication and learning disability?

Thanks in advance!

Hello Minto23

This is a great question. I am not an expert on this but this is where I would look:

* The Equality Act includes people with a learning disability - disabilityrightsuk.org/unde... is a good overview. I am not sure how much of it covers communication.

* this has a summary of best practice - mencap.org.uk/learning-disa...

* there are many different ways that people communicate. It would be worth looking at Makaton, talking mats ( talkingmats.com/ ) and other methods.

* Easy Read documents are also a great idea if you want to communicate effectively. There are some on the Mencap website, and also on NHS, central and local government websites.

I really hope this helps a little. I will also ask my colleagues in the policy team about your question.

Many thanks

Sarah

Hi Minto

Let me see what I can do - is there a specific question that you have as this is quite a big topic? For example - we could look at the right to reasonable adjustments, access to SEND support in schools, or access to speech and language therapy/AAC equipment to name but a few areas!

Best wishes

Sarah
