'Specific Language Disorder'...How common is this? Where can I find more information?

Hi all.

My 3.5 year old, previously suspected ASD and general learning disability, was seen again by the Paediatrician. It's been 6 months since our last visit.

She now feels my son more likely has a 'Specific Language Disorder' and this would explain why he his non-verbal and delayed in all areas, and also his poor behaviour, and agression towards his peers. She explained these disorders are fairly rare, making them difficult to diagnose.

I've tried to find out more about this online, so that I can educate myself on ways to best help my son. I can only find information for Specific Language Impairment. Is this the same condition?

Feeling a little lost, after being fairly certain of what his condition was, to be told it is now something that I can find very little information for!

Hi, I don't have any knowledge re the condition but can imagine how frustrating it must be for you both, how does he communicate his needs to you?My own son had a very limited, very poor voccabulary so we used Makaton, have you tried it? If not it's a very basic sign language and very easy to learn for both of you. I got my booklets from the Downs syndrome association many years ago or ask the clinic your son attends. When you do find out more re the condition I would love to know more. Best wishes.

Have you managed to find any more information? I have a 16 month old son who has global developmental delay. It’s too soon to know if ASD is the cause. I’m interested to know about all connected conditions. We’ve been referred to paediatrician so we’ll see. He can’t gesture or speak at all (not much babbling either). I’m very anxious about the whole thing. I’m no good with the unknown!
