A niggly calf and some transport issues meant that a trip to Gloucester to run the 10k was not going to happen today. However when I looked at the website to cancel my place it said I could still receive my medal if I ran it virtually. As someone who is highly motivated by bling, a trot around the streets of Stratford upon Avon seemed to be inevitable.
The calf problem is a long standing issue that needs careful handling. In order not to stress it too much, I decided I would avoid the energy sapping, gravel surface of the Greenway and I would Jeff a ratio of 3 mins run: 1 min walk. Mr Shakes decided he would accompany me for the first half. We headed away from the centre of town in search of quiet footpaths for the first 4kms, then we were in the Recreation Ground where it was very busy. So, saying bye bye to Hubby I set off up another road heading out of town. The blossom and Magnolia’s were beautiful, the blue skies and warm sunshine were very welcome, the wind less so! Everywhere there were people clutching bunches of flowers. It looked like some mothers were in for a treat.
The first 7.5km went ok and I was happy with the pace of my runs. By 8km I was feeling tired and although the run pace was a bit slower it was still ok. The pace of my walks however, were getting slower, I had also found some elevation that was not part of the plan. Thankfully there was not too much more to do and I was able to keep to the ratio of run to walk. At 10k I found myself near the pub where I was planning to me with Katnap and TailChaser later. I did my stretches and sat in the garden to enjoy a very refreshing pint of fruit cider. The Kats arrived and so did Mr Shakes, more drinks were consumed and then it was time to walk gently home on what was for the most part ‘even ground’, although I might have been a little unsteady on my feet!
