Just one sleep to go now until our HU virtual run together, be it 5k, 10k or 10 miles. Are you ready? Are you excited?

(If you're busy, at this point you may wish to skip to the end of this ridiculously long post ... if you have time on your hands and would enjoy a bit of a laugh at my expense , read on!!!)

I was ready … until a severe case of DOMS struck. Can you imagine two penguins going downstairs? That's me and Mr9389 right now. Getting to sit on the loo requires something to hold on to and elicits a quiet groan!!!

But, as Mr9389 keeps reminding me, at least we survived!

Survived what you might ask (unless you've already seen my strava that is).

On Wednesday we did a hike. Garmin tells me it was under 8k in all.

It was chosen and booked by Mr9389 before we left home. On Tuesday I asked to see the details, just to decide on choice of shoes, clothes etc. I discover we will take a short bus ride, followed by a climb to the highest point of the island and back again. Nice. Difficulty? β€˜Very difficult, including a grade 1 climb’ and β€˜the path is narrow and tilty’ What??? 😱

I didn't see that says Mr9389, but it's for 16-99 year olds so it must be fine!!! πŸ€”πŸ™„

It got worse! We were picked up by two guides, and joined the other members of our group - three very fit young ladies in their late twenties/very early 30s! Bear in mind I am in my sixties and we are here to celebrate Mr9389 's 70th birthday in a week or so!!!

We arrive at our start point. The guide tells us the first 5k are easy, then it gets a bit more challenging. I shudder, but know I am reasonably fit so hope it will be ok.

We set off. It is already not fine! The ground is uneven, steeply undulating with big drops to the side, but worst of all, the narrow path surface is awful - loose rocks, sand and volcanic shale- my worst nightmare. After just 509m or so of terror, we get to an amazing viewpoint, but all I can think is … if this is easy, what will challenging feel like.

The guide is going at a cracking pace, oblivious to my caution and terror.

I could go on here, but will skip to the point where, shortly after the route begins it's second stage - a steep ascent of volcanic rubble - Mr9389 says β€˜I'm not going to the top, I'll wait here'. I agree to stop with him, and one of the 20 somethings stays too. The other two girls and the two guides will be an hour and a half. No problem, the view is great!

I'm not phsically tired in any way, but the mental respite is very welcome. I should mention that one of the guides comes back to join us soon after we stopped - it's his first time doing the route and he doesn't like the height!!!

Eventually everyone returns, sharing photos from the summit, and we immediately head off again, still at pace! The guide says we will return a different way for a different view. It will be 'a little bit challenging for the first 15 minutes, but then it is OK!'

Trust me, there was no point in the next three hours where it was OK. The path got worse, steeply down and often back up again. At times we were clinging to the rockface, stepping on a loose ledge no wider than my feet! I was utterly terrified. Several times we had to stop because Mr9389 was exhausted. My legs were like jelly whenever I relaxed a bit, but the rest of the time they were completely tensed, waiting to rebalance every time the path gave way beneath my feet. I could neither look up nor down, just one step ahead the whole way. The view was dust and rock and shale! The guide praised my bravery (wrong, I was terrified) and my resilience (wrong, I was quietly crying inside my fear cave knowing there was no choice but to go on).

Finally we reached the bottom. I felt physically OK until a set of steps to climb up to the road … really? Yes, really, STEPS! … when I realised my glutes and quads were complaining.

The following day, Thursday, was a tempo run day according to my plan. The DOMS in my quads and glutes was beyond anything I have ever felt before, but ever keen to stick to my plan, I tried 😍

Running felt as if I had just come straight off a cycling session … my legs were simultaneously as stiff as boards, heavy as lead and weak as straw! They didn't loosen up at any point during the run 😭

Yesterday there was no discernible improvement. 😭😭

But today there is hope! This morning I reached the loo seat without holding on, and with only the slightest of thuds… my upper legs are still sore to touch, going downstairs is still a challenge but a little less comical to watch; I do believe they are beginning to take my weight once again.

Maybe, just maybe, one more sleep will do the trick, and tomorrow I will be on our start line as planned 🀞Whether it's the 19.5k long slow run on my training plan, or 10 miles, or 10k or 5k, at least (as Mr9389 would say) I survived!

As a footnote, we have a three day hike booked later this trip, before my Lisbon half on 9th March. I have yet to check the small print … but believe me, I will be checking it very, very carefully!

Linda, that sounds horrendous. What a nightmare. Glad you are OK now and hope the muscles are better for tomorrow.

Looking forward to the run. There are 40-mph winds forecast but not until the afternoon.

Thank you. I am more hopeful for tomorrow than I was! 40mph winds sound tricky - there's motivation right there to get out early tomorrow!

Goodness me Linda.....my legs jellified just reading that and I already knew some of it. Let's hope one more sleep is enough and you can run tomorrow πŸ€žπŸ˜ƒ

It was horrible. I looked back at one point and saw Mr9389 and one other girl and guide on the trickiest ledge. I had to immediately look away, it was terrifying! To think people do that for enjoyment ...

At least it's over now, you don't have to do it again. Strange what people do for enjoyment, my sister used to go potholing, mountain climbing and marathon running....

Now potholing ... I couldn't even try that!!!!!

Oh goodness Linda! Sounds like pure torture. Hope

You feel better soon.

I am not sure what day I am doing my 10km, depends where we are. Not so easy to do 10km in current location, paths for that distance are really broken up/uneven so likely to wait til I am home.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toJoster

For me it definitely felt like torture!I went on a recce walk yesterday and discounted some of the paths I had been going to run tomorrow, for the exact same reason. Surfaces here are very uneven, but unfortunately I'm stuck with that for the next couple of weeks so I will just bite the bullet tomorrow and go very slowly!!! But having the choice, your decision is very sensible 😊

Oh my word linda9389 , you do like a challenge - although clearly this was not quite what you expected! You are totally hardcoreπŸ’ͺ to have done what you did and I hope that when the pain goes (🀣) you will find yourself even stronger for all the effort!! Good luck with your run tomorrow! πŸ˜¬πŸ™‚

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toSandraj39

Maybe ... but not challenges as challenging as that! I'm just looking at the three day hike now. Fitness level 3 (scale of 1 to 5) sounds okish.

Day 1: 5 hours walking 12.5k BUT descending 1320m from the crater of a volcano. Yikes. Sounds too similar.

Day 2: 4.5 hours walking 11km, up 690, down 710m. Day 3: 3.5h walking 8k up 560m, down 710m.

Hmm. I think I'm going to allow myself to skip the planned run that clashes with day 2 of that tripπŸ™ˆπŸ™„

Oh good GRIEF Β linda9389 , I can only imagine. My palms are sweating at the very thought, and there was me thinking the Devil’s Cauldron in Devon was scary! πŸ˜…

I’m very very glad you survived, and I’m also glad that you’re gradually feeling less effects of DOMS. Maybe a gentle run tomorrow will help - I hope so! 🀞 And yes, make sure you check that hiking route in Lisbon extremely carefully! πŸ˜‚

I’m looking forward to my 10k tomorrow, doubling up as the London Winter Run! I think I found myself changing my distance in April to 10 miles too! Hopefully it’ll seem easy after the Bath Half in March! πŸ˜…

I bet Devils Cauldron WAS scary!I just checked the three day hike (see reply to Sandra above) and I'm not liking the sound of it!!! I do have a whole week of recovery before the Lisbon HM tho, so that's good.

I hope the wind holds off for LWR tomorrow and you all have a blast. I'll be thinking of the penguins and your medal as I trot round in the dust and the sun tomorrow 😊

By April you'll be so strong you'll not notice 10 miles Cheeky!

That sounds terrifying, but you survived the experience and what a tale to tell! I like hiking and exploring and have been well out of my comfort zone at times, but nothing like that. You're both superstars, of that there is no doubt.

I'm no superstar, honestly 😍 I very much love walking and hiking, but even more I love to stay in my comfort zone 😍

Oh no Linda, that sounds horrendous, and I had to google DOMs! I hope your next walking break does not have similar repercussions!

My plan is to run 5k at RunWalkLocal tomorrow but that will involve running into a southerly 30 mph wind, which is our equivalent of hill training. I may be able to fit a longer run during the week but not sure yet.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toDexy5

Me too Dezy, although I counted and I have 8 days between the end of that trip and my race. Hopefully time for any muscle ashes to fade. I just need to make sure I don't roll an ankle or worse! That wind is brutal isn't it. 5k at the weekend and a longer run in the following week ... that'll be a double Dexy!

Horrendous and very dangerous. I felt every step of that having been in similar occasions when Mr OF and I climbed and walked regularly. Often through no fault of our own and fortunately having the experience and equipment ... to cope.

You were right to be terrified and I am so sorry that you are so uncomfortable but thankful you are still alive !

Take is slow and steady and walk when you need to... life is for enjoyment... do, please take care of you xxx

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toOldfloss

It's funny, I did think of you and Mr OF and how you chose climbing for pleasure 😍 I will be reading the small print in future - that was our own fault and we have to take responsibility for that.I know there are lots of hikes out there that we can, and will, enjoy; we just have to be more careful in our research. At the end of the day, the fear was actually a survival skill ... it made me cautious and got me down in one, (almost) still functioning, piece πŸ˜ƒ

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorβ€’ in reply tolinda9389

I an so glad you did get down safely... Mr OF was a volunteer for Snowdonia Mountain rescue and has helped bring folk down, injured or worse...just out for a hike !

Take care you... How are you feeling?

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toOldfloss

Having lived in Deganwy I'm all too aware how often ill prepared folk need to be rescued from Snowdonia. And I do definitely feel a bit guilty, which is why I haven't complained. I believe the guide should have adapted the hike to the weakest members of his group for safety reasons (even our trip email had talked about an easier option, but this was never mentioned); he shouldn't have taken the alternative route down. For sure, we made a mistake, but it was his responsibility to keep us safe.

Having said that, it was our responsibility to check we were fit enough. The description was lacking detail, but 'very difficult ' should have been enough for me to at least enquire - difficult how? Difficult steep, indicating a high level of exertion would have been fine; a technical hike was not!

But we're OK. Our scrapes healed fast, and the DOMS were almost a thing of the past this morning. All good. And we learned a lesson!

That is a horror story! Bad enough going up; but the thought that you have to get back down again and meet those horrors again on the way! We are experienced runners, right? When the pre run blurb says β€œundulating”, we know that it can mean just that, or it can mean something more like this πŸ§—β€β™€οΈ. I am guessing that they wouldn’t get many clients if they said β€œyou will experience lethally narrow ledges, steep climbs, crumbling shale under foot and there is a none negligible risk that either you or your partner, or both, won’t make it back in the same physical and or mental state you were in when you started…or at all! πŸ™‚ So pleased, relieved, happy to have you both back in one piece. Think the due diligence process would benefit from a review πŸ˜‚πŸ€—

linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toBeachcomber66

I think you summed it up perfectly. Or at least my view of it.😍 The main guide on the other hand was cheerful as chips, skipping along in his happy place! I guess life is very much influenced by perspective; that perspective sure affects what you can make of things!!!

Oh Linda, sounds very unpleasant. I would like to see footage when they have the 99 year olds on the path, might not be too cleaver for 16 year olds either. I think you are very brave to join any so called 'walks' in foreign lands. I go out with my French walking group but I know the area well and have reasonably good idea of what to expect. However there was a night hike once that got quite scary!! Remember to take your poles next time (and may be a safety rope and crampons!!). Thanks for sharing, your writing is very amusing.

I only have one and it is telescopic so fits in my rucksack most of the time. Essential over rough ground, any type of downhill step slope and when the mud makes it slippy. Kept me upright a few times.

linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toShake-and-run

Maybe I should consider that - and practice on a few easier hikes!!! As it was I spent a lot of time using my hand to steady myself on rocks when I could, or just sitting and walk/crab/sliding down in the dust!
