'Let's Get Back to that Running Lark' Run

Well after all the procrastinating, bad weather and sickness I've made a return to running easily and slowly. Although I felt it all slipping away at times I started to volunteer at parkrun which has helped keep an interest. I have a 10k booked on the 21st on the island of Rhodes and obviously want to run it and as the miser on my shoulder tells me 'you are not wasting your money'😂 so as a warm up I booked the 7k RNLI Santampa Memorial run this Sunday to help me get up to the distance again.A fortnight before I ran the HM on the 3rd March I bought a new pair of running shoes after a gait analysis which basically left me 'normal' I opted for these ALTRA FORWARD's which I haven't run in until today. They are not a conventionally shaped running shoe and are wider across the foot and after running for 6k I couldn't see any reason to be annoyed with the purchase 😀 Starting off the tongues were rubbing low against the front of my legs which disappeared on the left one after awhile but continued on the right which I eventually attributed to tying the right lace too tight. Also the ankle tab is quite high so touched the back of my ankle every stride which I wasn't used to but again that soon disappeared. I have always run with sorbothane heel wedges in my shoes but was advised to try the ALTRA's without them unfortunately my achilles tendons are still there and have been telling me they want the sorbothane back, so they have been replaced. My only real gripe with the shoes are the laces, they're not long enough to tie a good non-fiddly double knot. It was the same with my first pair of Asics so I'm back to lacing up with reef knots. My second pair of Asics (a lot more £'s worth although bought in the sales) had a lovely length of lace. I think manufacturers, if they are putting the extra runners holes in the shoe lacing system need to increase the length of the lace to make sure there's plenty to tie.

As to the run itself it went far better than expected and I got in just as it started raining, I say 'I got in' which is technically wrong as Mrs OMR running decided to lock me out so I got a little wet.

The other photo is the driftwood on our beach which has been there in various positions over the past few weeks. When it first came in it looked like the Loch Ness monster had escaped as it bobbed around in the sea. Now it seems to have set itself up as the guardian of our town!!

Good run OMR. The Santampa sailed out of Teesside. Many ship’s and lifeboat crew were killed as you will know. Hope your warm up run for Rhodes goes well.👍

I like the look of these Altra shoes - the wide toe-box especially.

Good luck on your 7k warm up race for your 10k Rhodes race 🤩

welcome back OldManRunning. Good luck with your races. Brooks used to have lots of lace to play with too. They haven’t got shorter, but the holes are now further apart so more lace is used. I’ve left feedback with retailers and Brooks but to no avail. Their laces are also cheaper and have less grip than their old ones too, not good when the shoes cost so much.

Thank you Dexy5. Managed the 7k OK in 46.28 with a few walk breaks but felt fine 😁

A great comeback and with new shoes, there's no going back now! Get your name on the April events list for Rhodes (if you haven't already) and we can all shake our pompoms for you 😊
