Resting a bit too much in my taper...

Might have overdone it on my 20 mile training run - the last long run of my marathon plan because I soon realised my right quad pain was lasting a bit longer than the usual day or two and it has prevented me from running this week. I'm still 2 weeks away from the race so am not worrying too much but have decided not to attempt tomorrow's long run. I spoke to the lady I had a sports massage with but she is away. She advised gentle exercise and heat. It's so frustrating! Not sure moving weaned calves into their new pen counted as gentle exercise this evening but I'll have a hot bath now to settle it 😬 Has anyone else had trouble at the taper time?

sounds like a sensible approach (may be not the calf herding 🤣🐄)

Unavoidable! They were quite well behaved to be fair!

I added a photo but now I can't see it. I'll wait to see if it's a delay in uploading before I redo it.....

Sometimes the forum page just doesn’t do what you want to do. I’ll look out for a future post when it’s behaving itself.

it worked, thank you. They are so beautiful. How old are they?

These are about 4 months old. Very nosy!

So frustrating! It's always at the end!!! A bit of extra rest will do no harm now. You have the 20 miles done, now concentrate on resting that quad til it eases. Sending healing vibes 🙏

amazing distance, can't imagine running that far! I thought the HM was long enough when I did that in April.

It's amazing how your mind adapts to the distances.... I was recalling when I did c25k and couldn't imagine getting to 10k - it seemed really unobtainable! Now what have I done!!!

Try not to stress it too much   Cowladyrunning .

Fwiw, here's a verbatim quote from my Strava, after a 25k run (entitled "Utterly exhausting post-holiday 25k run-walk 17/09/2021") just over two weeks before my trail marathon: "Memo to self: don't go away for a fortnight and hardly run, two weeks before a trail marathon. Yes it was warm and humid, but I've never felt so tired during a run. Walked loads, including stuff I'd usually run with no problem. I'm getting slower and less confident with every run. So much for training plans."

I was fine on marathon day, despite my knee deciding to play up roughly 16km into it.

You'll be fine too. Sending you positive, healing vibes!

Thank you for that Cmoi! It's feeling ok today after resting today instead of long run. I'll leave running til Tuesday and see what happens...

Epsom salts baths are very good!

You won’t need another long run now with your race so close.

Just keep moooooving ☺️😁💪👍

I put salts in. And today - weird not prepping for a looong run but had a gentle stroll around the local ploughing match.

Good 😀👍

Post race bath and I’d got no salts 🤨🛀. I got some radox bubble bath but it failed to hit the spot

Oh no! quick - restock!!

I’m hoping to get some later when I pop to the local shops once I’ve returned the dog. Our shops are a bit hit n miss though

I alway seem to get a few niggles before a big run. UTS thinks it’s because I’m more aware of them as I approach the big day. But this sounds more than a niggle and resting a bit sounds a very good idea. I should think you get plenty of exercise without worrying about keeping the wheels oiled. I use packs that you can freeze and microwave so you can alternate cold and hot on an injury.

Good luck

Good luck with your race Cowladyrunning, rest and warm Epsom salt baths will soon have you right as rain. I also wear compression tights after a tough run I think I wore them most day's during my last Marathon training! I also eat ~100g protein a day as I'm in my 50s I find it really helps with recovery. Hope you have a great day on race day, try to relax and enjoy your taper, you've done the hard work 😀

Thank you, I hadn't thought of compression tights... and yes protein important isn't it.

definately vouch for some compression tights/leggings, used them for a couple of days after the three peaks when I couldn't walk down the stairs!!😂

I have every confidence in you CLR. Your training runs have looked epic, and now you’ve done all the tough stuff, sit back and relax (maybe don’t sit the whole time!) before your big day. You’ll do it, and you’ll do it in style.

Oh, another fan of Epsom Salts. Miracle workers. 🙏

Thank you Cheeky. I think I might have put too much salt in my bath the night of the 20 miles run as my fingers went really funny -wrinkly and dry like I'd been in the bath too long but I hadn't! Maybe that's why I got muscle pain - dried them out instead of relaxing them 😂
