My little faithful IPod is no more 🥲

My ipod has given up the ghost. I was charging it yesterday in preparation for a run today and when I checked on it after a few hours, it was dead ☹️

I bought it in Vancouver thirteen years ago before I started to run. I used it for the gym and flights and on holidays and I loved it.

When I discovered running I downloaded the C25K programme onto it and then we went through each run and eventually graduated together 🤗 After graduation I ran with a variety of music but mostly epic dramatic pieces that have remained on my iPod ever since. We’ve had some fabulous times together and it’s kept me going on some hard runs.

This was my second ipod. The first one died while it was still under guarantee and Apple replaced it without question but, since they have stopped making them anymore, this is my final one ☹️

I ran 10K this morning without it and while I enjoyed the peace and quiet I did miss my little friend.

But it’s now time to look at other options. Any recommendations anyone?

Can't you still pick one up on Amazon or ebay Irishprincess ?

I had a quick look today and they seem to be reconditioned. Not sure I want reconditioned obsolete technology. Maybe time for something new….

Good point! Would you go for an mp3 player or maybe a watch? I always run with my phone and use Spotify for music and podcasts. That reminds me, I've not downloaded anything from there for ages and they're putting up the subscription!

It’s just come back to life! How weird is that? Not sure what I’d go for next time. Half the fun will be in the shopping 🙂

Aaawww end of a fabulous era! 🤗🥲

I have gone for bone conducting earphones & my phone (stashed in a comfy running belt.) I enjoy music lists I have created & also favourite radio 4 programs using BBC sounds.

I love your epic music idea - must add some to my running playlist! 😄

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Elfe5

I was thinking of bone conducting earphones. What make are yours?

I love my epic music! As I was saying to Cmoi the other day in her chat post, I feel as if I’m starring in my own movie 😂

Elfe5 profile image
Elfe5 in reply to Irishprincess

Brilliant! Self made movie star!😂

I splashed out on Aeropex Aftershokz, I have had them for several years & they are excellent - not just for running- gardening too & any other occasion that I want to listen to the radio etc without disturbing other people. They are fine with glasses/sunglasses- just put on the earphones then add the glasses on top. I look after them very carefully to avoid them being squashed/ damaged - they are either in their box or on my head. (A Chinese takeaway plastic tub + some bubble wrap makes a good travel box for them, because I didn’t think the soft travel pack that they came with was adequate protection - I’m hoping they will be a once in a lifetime expense.😄)

I’ve had a look at the website and they look fab. In the meantime, my iPod has come back to life! But I probably do need a replacement just in case….

RIP iPod. I too loved mine. People couldn’t understand why I still used it when they had moved onto smartphones which did everything.

But I got fed up with the lead to earphones in the end and bluetooth from phone to bone conduction earphones then took over.

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Dexy5

The sound quality on my little iPod was brilliant and even my phone is not as good but I know what you mean about the leads. I do feel a lot less tangled when I run “naked” 🙂

RIP iPod, that brought back memories, I loved mine, if you don't want to take your phone how about a music smart watch?

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to SueAppleRun

I do always take my phone Sue because my runs are always in quiet remote places. But I’m open to suggestions about a replacement. Time for some browsing…. 🤗

I think I'd suggest bone conducting headphones Bluetooth from your phone, I take my phone and to be totally honest the music on my watch cuts out a bit when running, its fine for walking and in the garden but unless you can run without swinging your arm backwards then the cutting out for a couple of seconds here and there can be irritating

Irishprincess profile image

Not sure I’d want to run without swinging my arms 😂

Good bye little iPod! I just use my phone, IP - along with my Shokz bone conductor headphones. Perfect combo!😊

What’s the quality of the sound like Sandra?

Sandraj39 profile image
Sandraj39Half Marathon in reply to Irishprincess

Really good IP - I have the Shokz Aeropex which I think have been renamed Open run? They are so comfy to wear (I never really like running with in-ear earphones) and have the added benefit of not blocking out surround so really safe for running in. 👍🙂

Sounds great. My iPod has returned to life 🤗 but I do need a replacement just in case as I think it’s probably in the final stages.

Deepest sympathy to you Irishprincess, so sorry about your ipod dying, you will miss it on further runs, however, life and running must go on, I have never had a ipod as over the years while walking and before I started running I listened to my portable CD (Waltman) and now while running my Smartphone, I am sure you will find something to listen to while on further runs, well done on that 10K run you ran today

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to AlMorr

CD Walkman!!! That brings back memories Al 😍 Mind you, I’m old enough to remember playing 45’s and 78’s on a record player 😎

Those were the days, but thank goodness we’ve moved on 🙂

Me too IP - and how about those funny little record players where you could stack several singles up at once! Shocking quality but fun! 😅

I remember my CD Walkman "died" while I was on a 10K walk the Sunday morning before Christmas 2021 listening to a double CD of Christmas Carols from the Choir of Kings College Cambridge, I got through the first CD with a bit of stuttering, the second CD wouldn't start, so the rest of the walk was done in silence, luckily I now have that EXACT CD on Spotify.

During the same 10K walk on the Sunday morning before Christmas 2022 I listened to that same "CD" on my Smartphone from Spotify, double "CD"all the way through without any interruptions.

Technology has certainly come a long way Al. I love the Christmas Carols from Kings 😍

Nawwh, how sad ... I have a baby shuffle upod you could have ... not sure if it still works though (I've just put it on charge out of curiosity). I don't think you can pick tracks as I remember (no display).Like others, I use phone and bone conducting bluetooth headphones.

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to linda9389

Another vote for phone and bone conducting headphones…… thanks very much for the offer Linda but maybe it’s time to try something completely different.

Argh what a shame IP. iPods were incredible back in the day weren’t they? The sound quality compared to Sony Walkmans was fantastic!

I’m afraid I just use my phone now. Not as much fun as an iPod, but you can’t deny the sound quality. 🎶

Ahh! That’s sad. I bought my hubby the exact same one except a different colour for a Xmas gift and he had it for about 15 years and then suddenly it died too last year and like you he misses his little friend. He still has it but it won’t charge up at all and the screen on it just shows pixelated lines.

Now he just uses his iPhone for music when cycling.

I hope you don’t mind but I’ve just told him your sad story and he sympathises with you.

I had an Ishuffle when I started running and downloaded all of C25K and various music. Sadly one year I left it in my running top or jacket cannot remember which and I washed it and it died too. Tried the old rice trick but it never worked.

Now I just use my iPhone for Strava and music .

Good luck in finding something 👍🥰x

Oh no! A washing cycle would be the end 🙀 So easily done though.

You can tell your husband that my IPod has retuned to life! I’ve just posted an update. Very strange but for now it’s working although it’s probably on its last legs.

I still have an old MP3 player that still works , must be similar age to your iPod Although I don't use it anymore..

Just my phone and 'Shokz open run pro' bone conduction headset which I noticed others have mentioned!

I absolutely love the headset btw 😁

Aaaw! that's sad IP. That transported me back in time - literally! after fishing my iPod Nano out of the drawer, turned it on, it still works but I'm back in 1970. Loved my iPod, I have all the C25k podcasts with lovely Laura on there still, ❤️ but today its my phone and Shokz Open Pro mini (for smaller heads) great sound and I can still hear all traffic noise including "hoons" on e-scooters who use the pavement.

Yes, lovely Laura is on mine too Lexi 😍 Weirdly, my iPod has returned to life! I have no idea why or how but for the minute it’s working although I probably do need to look at a replacement.

My iPod has just returned to life! No idea how but I do need to look for a replacement.

I do think iTunes has a wider selection of the Epic genre than Spotify, so I’d probably avoid Spotify.

Have you tried a hard reset through iTunes? It may just have got its knickers in a knot.

Irishprincess profile image

Weirdly, it has now come back to life! I did charge it onto my MAC and iTunes yesterday but it was still “dead” afterwards. But this morning it’s back on!

TailChaser profile image

Oh that’s sad IP. You should frame it and put it up with your medals as your ‘faithful companion’ 😢

I’ve got a Garmin 245 music that I connect my Shokz to. That seems to work well when I don’t want to take my phone (which isn’t very often tbh). It’s a bit fiddly but it does a fine job with more than enough storage for the longer runs.

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to TailChaser

Thats a great idea TC as I couldn't bear to throw it out. But weirdly, it’s now come back to life! No idea what happened and I suspect it might be on its last legs so I do need to look for a replacement just in case. Shokz seems to be a popular choice here…

TailChaser profile image

They are very good IP. I’ve just got my second pair as the first pair mysteriously snapped, I have no idea how 🤷🏻‍♀️ They still worked but they’ve been held together with superglue for over a year. I’ve been warned not to get the new ones that hook over the ear, apparently they are really, really fiddly for using whilst running.

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to TailChaser

I do like earplugs that hooks over the ear as I never got on with the plugs, they kept falling out!

Maybe it’s my ears…

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserMarathon in reply to Irishprincess

I don’t like the plugs either, my holes are too small!! The normal Shokz are great, these new ones are those that wrap around the back of your ears and are separate.

Hi IP. Long time no visiting here.

Sad for your ipod. People say, "The old doesn't go, and new can't take its place". Time to have new running accessory perhaps.

I barely listen to music now on a run. It's not safe on road and I need to focus the energy on running itself. No extra accessories except wear a Garmin watch. Keep it simple.

Finished over 300k mileage this July, average pace is about 6 minutes and 10 seconds/kilometer, pretty slow as usual. I don't or couldn't or wouldn't like to run at an intense pace now, as people as me are getting old and not very competitive. Just be or pretend to be cool when those younger folks, at their 20s or 30s, run at 4 minutes/k and outrun me easily. A voice at that moment from my mind is like, "whoa whoa whoa, take it a bit easy, why the rush, fellows!"

Basically, my pace in this first half of year belong to aerobic exercise. And successfully lost 2-3 pounds so far. Keep the heart rate at the lower end of its range helps weight loss, fat loss and don't wear people out.

But I'll keep training and take the pace up a notch faster at the next few months. Muscle strength and explosiveness is the weak link for my technique. Srength training is necessary. Improve and enrich personal well-being is always the priority, I won't push myself too hard, I won't be too easy on myself either.

The sun is scorching the world at this season. Drink timely and Keep safe. Hope all runners here accomplish their training goal and keep health in the next few months of the year. Good luck, all. :)

Hello. Good to see you here again. It sounds as if your running, and everything else, is going great 👍 Have you done 300K in the month of July? If so, that’s tremendous mileage!

My iPod has, mysteriously, come back to life again so I have it for the time being although it might not last. Technology works to its own beat 🙂

Enjoy your running and keep us updated here 😎

slow_runners profile image
slow_runners in reply to Irishprincess

Thanks IP. Really happy that your ipod works again. Maybe it just a bit tired after a run and needs a break. Or, It's old too, a quick recovery seems too harsh for it. 😂

Yeah, only by finishing 300k a month can I lose some weight and improve the running skill. Plan to run over 300k in August and September too. Tough training in the hottest season of the year brings better performance later for runners. Besides, body suffers, spirit blooms.🤔

I'll keep you guys updated if someday my running technique is better and can run a bit faster. Let's become better in running together.

Have a good day. 😀
