Iโ€™ll admit it โ€“ this weekโ€™s marathon chat is both an excuse to spam you with another photo of my dog, and to do a bit of herding myself!

Jediโ€™s part Border Collie, part Bernese Mountain Dog (probably...) and as such, heโ€™s given to herding. As heโ€™s not allowed near livestock, he feels duty-bound to hone his unsubtle, goofy, noisy technique on his hoomans.

So, in best well-meaning yet possibly unintentionally infuriating Jedi style, I'm going to herd all you lovely VRBs towards assorted posts (NB which I've updated again on Tuesday at 20h20 BST):

๐ŸŽ‰ If youโ€™d like pompoms for an April event, please reply to this post: healthunlocked.com/marathon...

๐Ÿ“ฃ Mayโ€™s events post is also now up - see here: healthunlocked.com/marathon...

๐ŸŽฝ You can still join in the fun of the HUHM or 10K: healthunlocked.com/marathon... If your circumstances have changed, no problem, you can swap distances or withdraw - just do whatโ€™s right for you!

๐ŸŽง Weโ€™d love to hear your suggestions for the HUHM10K playlist too. Please reply here healthunlocked.com/marathon... and do include a Spotify link if you possibly can. It saves time hunting around, and ensures we know the preferred version of your suggested tracks. ETA: mega thanks to ย TailChaser who's been doing an amazing job adding links to our playlist spreadsheet!

Oh, you wanted some running chat too? Not just my barking at you? Well, like Jedi, I much prefer running among the trees to staying on roads, and Iโ€™m apt to get distracted by whatever I happen to come across during a run. This past week itโ€™s been elevation again โ€“ but oh, my knees!

So howโ€™s your running going? Whether youโ€™ve triumphed, experienced setbacks, or just got on with things, weโ€™d love to hear from you!

Run safe, run injury-free, run happy! ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

lovely dawg ๐Ÿฅฐ Iโ€™d like another dog to run with as my borrowed one has hung up his running lead ๐Ÿ˜•. I like the idea of it but not the realities๐Ÿ˜€

Running is going ok but I should have run the half marathon yesterday. The one I missed weeks ago at Monsal. I still donโ€™t feel fit enough though ๐Ÿ™„ Iโ€™m going to give it a whirl though just to see how far I get. She who dares โ€ฆ.. sorta thing.

Not today though. I have to go and commune with my vegetables ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Thanks misswobble . Tbh I don't really run much with Jedi - there's the occasional 5k on roads, with him on a canicross lead, but I'm not risking it on forest paths. Walks are much better fun!

Good luck for your HM distance! Must be a year since I last managed that. Have signed up to the HUHM regardless, on the basis that I can always pick an easy route, though that feels like cheating. Previous route is currently out due to the crazy Anatolian Shepherd Dog (?) that's guarding sheep. It goes for my car so am not letting it get near me!

Hope the veggies enjoyed the communing and will respond appropriately!

I play music in the greenhouse. Mellow jazz for the plants ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŒถ๐Ÿฅ’๐Ÿซ‘๐Ÿ…. Nothing discordant at all ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽต

Cmoi profile image
CmoiMarathon in reply to misswobble

My dad insisted on growing tomatoes sci-en-ti-fi-ca-lly. This involved calculating water and feed down to the last ml, and ventilating the greenhouse according to precise temperatures and specified times of day. As a teen it was far less stressful babysitting the neighbours' kids than looking after a dozen tomato plants!

I tried my new phone battery case first thing this morning. I downloaded a 10 mile run, did the run with audio commentary, stopped at the cafe for coffee, came home and took Molly for a walk back to the cafe (today being sausage day), and it is now 16:39โ€ฆ and I still have 100% charge on my phone! Zero chance of CB being cut off in his prime on long runs! A huge success. Thanks misswobble ๐Ÿ™‚.

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Half Marathon in reply to Beachcomber66

Whatโ€™s your battery case? I have a special pocket in my ski jacket that preserves battery, but can hardly wear it for running ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿฅณ I have a portable power bank but itโ€™s a bit heavy to cart around!

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Sandie1961

There are lots of them on Amazon Sandie. It is just a slightly heavier mobile phone case with a built in charger. It has a lug which fits into the charge point of the phone. You charge up the phone and charger together. You can either leave the charger on, which I did on my long run, or switch off and just switch it on when your phone needs a charge. My phone objected when I tried to leave it switched on during the mains charging process (Apple incompatibility message) but it has been fine otherwise.

Sandie1961 profile image

Thanks, Iโ€™ll have a look ๐Ÿ˜ƒ My powerbank weighs about 200g so not really practical for running!

great stuff! ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘

I got my phone mended today. I ran to the repair shop and ran willy nilly til I had to collect it. Itโ€™s a bit rough on the two top corners now but the battery case top piece should cover it. Ran home singing by the old canal ๐ŸŽต๐ŸŽถ (song clue there ๐Ÿ˜)

Iโ€™m so looking forward to next months half. Iโ€™ve just ordered some new fuel to try out. Still trying to get that right. The Huma + gels did not sit well on race day ๐Ÿ˜”

Iโ€™m sure my next HM will be much better as Iโ€™m planning to run it easy. I will give apricots a go. The problem I have with buying sweets for long runs is that I have no self control & I eat them outside of running๐Ÿคฃ

Thank you RunWillie , and that's such a lovely photo, I might nick it!

30 miles again? I'm in awe, as usual! I tried one gel, once. I survived - I loathe gelatinous textures - but that's as good as it got. I usually take little snacks like nuts, dried apricots, dates, Decathlon, almond paste bars, and occasionally airdried sausage. Though I've been doing such short distances recently I've not needed to fuel!

Well, blooming setback city this end. Ah, the return of Jedi (someone had to say itโ€ฆ). He always looks so happy and full of beans!

Running going ok, although Iโ€™m fed up with tight leg muscles but it could be worse (having just read SkiMonday โ€™s post), so I shouldnโ€™t whinge. This week is quite structured in the build up to Shakes HM on Friday. I did 8 miles yesterday, a little run tomorrow with strength work in the evening then my club run (easy) Weds evening. RD at parkrun with @katnap on Saturday to recover (?).

Had to do a long run yesterday as Iโ€™m shaking my pom poms at the London Marathon on Sunday ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ My club have a โ€˜Cheer Stationโ€™ and Iโ€™ve got lots of people to spot. If anyone on here would like me to shake my pom poms at them ( Realfoodieclub ?) on Sunday, Iโ€™ll be at Canary Wharf, approx mile 18 with the very loud, probably pink, Fordy Runs contingent. If you canโ€™t join them then cheer loudly for them ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿคฉ

I think I'm a cat-and-dog-person Irishprincess - or maybe just a monochrome beasties one, all our pets have been black and white!

So glad things are going well running-wise, you've had quite enough hassle over the past few months. As for all the shoes, you've made me feel better as I haven't (yet) accumulated that many pairs. I'm working on it though, as I've just bought a pair of barely worn Decathlon trail shoes on Vinted. At least I hope I have, I'm waiting for confirmation from the seller.

The trail shoes in which I did the Trail du Gรฉvaudan were relegated months ago to being walking shoes. Quite what I'll do when they're no good for that I don't know!

Our local running shop has a bin for old shoes and they get recycled or passed to charities who can distribute them to those in need. Hi Cmoi; Jedi is a very handsome dog indeed. Our OES shows little sign of any herding instinct, except that she automatically blocks off any dog which is trying to run past her without paying tribute! Most owners understand โ€œshe is a sheepdog you know โ€œ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I was up early this morning for the second 10 miler in the plan. It has been a funny week really. Last Monday was 10 miles, then one of the midweek runs was 12k and then 10 miles again today. This seemed like a big increase in mileage, but my brain flipped back to week 5 run 3 of C25k. I decided that the planners must know what they are doing, so I would definitely be ready for the run today! The weather was beautiful, warm, with little wind and the sun peeping in and out of the clouds.

The run went pretty well, a shade under 2 hours (a bit quicker than last week) and whilst it was way off PB time, the plan is about preparing for a HM, not 10 mile PBs (any excuse). As noted in my response to ย misswobble above, her suggestion of a battery case to stop my phone chopping of CB in his prime on long runs was a great success. It is still 100% charged now! ย Dexy5 was interested in this too.

So, a good day. I have fixed up a physio appointment for Wednesday because my leg muscles feel a bit tight and my calves are quite lumpy. I have been rolling them and using a massage ball, but I think an extra bit of oomph is required. I can feel my eyes watering already!! Happy running week all.๐Ÿ™‚

Cmoi profile image
CmoiMarathon in reply to Beachcomber66

Thanks Beachcomber66 ! Sounds like you're doing really well with your plan. I keep saying I'll do longer runs, the find myself heading uphill and deciding that's an excuse for not going far.

Bon courage for the physio! I just checked my calves and they don't feel lumpy, just enormously chunky. That's a really good reason to get back to longer runs, I must stop making excuses!

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Cmoi

That is not an excuse; it is a reason. I think my issue is the outside peroneals. Trying to keep me upright in the mud!

Hi Cmoi. Jedi looks like a lovely excuse to get out for a play in the woods!

Today marks 6 years since I started C25K. Back then I was always fearful that I might give up running, now I'm always fearful that I won't be able to run... How times have changed!

In about 12 hours I'm setting off for Canada again. The Vancouver HM is only 20 days away now and I wish I felt a bit more fit! For the last couple of runs I have felt like lead and both knees feel old and crocked. I had a sports massage today but he couldn't find anything specific ... which means he couldn't help! At the moment I'm thinking I'll have to treat it like a tourist trip rather than a race ๐Ÿ˜

Congratulations on your sixth runniversary ย linda9389 ! As you know, I don't really need an excuse to play in the woods, and Jedi loves it there, so what's not to like?

You've done a fair bit of fast running over longer distances recently, are you sure that's not why you're feeling a bit tired? linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Cmoi

I'm sure I am tired ๐Ÿ˜I do find events stressful and they are hard work but the reward I get far outweighs the effort I put in. Mentally and physically they take me to a different level and the sense of achievement I get outweighs many things in my life. Cmoi profile image
CmoiMarathon in reply to linda9389

Funnily enough I can be horribly competitive. However since it's eminently clear I'll never win anything in running, I see no point in making myself miserable to move from mediocre to slightly less mediocre!

Also, as I've said before, I find the atmosphere of events intimidating, as I don't cope well with crowds, noise, running with others or the pressure to perform in front of spectators.

I do like conquering the odd bit of silly terrain or gradient though!

Never used to connect with dogs, perhaps because no pets as a child, but that changed when some friends got a Gordon Setter which appeared to take a liking to me. Many happy hours hiking across the moors with that dog.

Nothing really to report on the running front. Oh - got some new running tops - strange how easy it is to get out and run just because of having new kit! Hoping to be ready to run a virtual HM in May.

Will have a go at suggesting a song for PL, though my tastes are eccentric, so a rejection would not offend! ๐Ÿคฃ

Jedi loves the forest so much ForbiddenPlanet !

I used to be quite scared of dogs as a child because I wasn't allowed one. Nor any other furry indoor pets, come to that. I quite liked friends' dogs, but I was permanently anxious about not knowing how to handle them - how do I put on its collar, attach its lead, walk it, what if I stroke it wrong, what if it barks...

Do let us have your playlist suggestions for the HUHM. My taste is music is also eccentric - I frequently run to Renaissance choral music - so you very likely have scope! We're not setting out to reject tracks (unless there are particularly offensive lyrics that potentially breach HU guidelines, in which case we probably couldn't use the piece in question.)

it was the beautiful Jedi that drew me to this post. I have nothing running-wise that I want to report because I am recovering from some kind of muscle trauma and trying to get myself healed.

Ah thanks LiisaM . I do hope you're fully healed soon. It can be hard to post when it feels like you have nothing to report. I think the replies to this thread show that many of us are facing different sorts of challenges, and that chatting about non-running topics can sometimes be just as welcome too.

Hello Cmoi ๐Ÿ‘‹ Jedi is such a cute dog!

Iโ€™ve been loving my time looking after my sonโ€™s dog this past week who is a 3 legged Serbian Hound that he rescued.

Iโ€™ve filled everyday with fabulous walks in the most beautiful and peaceful old English woods and countryside.

He might have only 3 legs, but you would never know it as he is strong and fast and easily capable of handling himself when running around with other dogs.

Running wise Iโ€™m getting back from a couple of annoying injuries and fingers crossed/touch wood Iโ€™ll remain injury free for long enough to get a PB or two this season. Iโ€™m quite a way short of my times from last season at the moment but itโ€™s getting better slowly.

Here's to your staying injury-free and racking up the PBs and medals!
