Hello awesome runners.

(*hides behind sofa*) it’s me again 🙄 I promise you that the other admins haven’t run away and will be back shortly. We’ve just had a little hiatus in our rotas but normal service shall be resumed very soon.

In the meantime, let’s talk about how our week has gone.

I’ve had a very frustrating week. My physio appointment went well. She confirmed it was a muscular problem and gave me some exercises to help with my glutes (again!) But frustratingly, a few days of exercises hurt my back further and I’ve now also got a sprain/strain in my hip flexors which is where it all started back in March so I feel as if I’ve gone backwards ☹️

I was going to ask my GP to refer me to a back specialist as this has gone on too long, but first I am going to try a recommended osteopath to see what he says. The earliest appointment I could get is next Monday so I doubt I’ll risk a run before then ☹️

I hope your week went better than that so please share your news and tell us what’s happened in your running world.

There is a flurry of events coming up in October so no doubt many of you are training or coming to the end of training. But for those of you who are running for yourselves then we still love to read about your runs and revel in your photos. Tell all here!

Whatever you do, have a happy week and here’s to the joy of running 🤗

The Marathon Team xxx

~~~
🥳 Keep those events for October coming! It’s going to be a bumper C25K month!!! Head here if you haven’t already told us all about it:
Hi Irishprincess & other running superhero’s,
I’m so sorry about your back IP. Hope you get it sorted soon.
I’ve been on a Hanson HM plan which has got me back running 6 times a week & back up to my base mileage. I haven’t followed a plan since reaching 10k. I’m suppose to be running just easy miles according to the plan but I’ve introduced a Marathon pace run & a threshold run to keep things a little more exciting. I’m loving being disciplined about the different running intensity’s more than being on a plan with set daily mileage. I may ditch the plan as I just want to keep my weekly mileage consistent until the end of the year & get my long run back up to 2.5 hours.
Boys are on school holiday’s for the next couple of weeks so it is back to early morning runs for me.
Happy week everyone ❤️🏃‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️
Today’s Easy run 😍
I love running down to the ocean most days. It’s a beautiful coastline to have on your doorstep. Glad you’re feeling better x
You’ve been very patient and built up sensibly RW so now you’re reaping the reward of doing that.
That photos is gorgeous 😍
Thanks Irishprincess 😍
I certainly didn’t feel like I was reaping rewards on my Marathon pace run this morning. I had one of those runs with all the negative chatter in my head. “I’m never going to be able to run a marathon at this pace” etc etc.
So happy to read you got out there. Awesome news🤩
Sorry to hear of your injury problems IP, hope you get it sorted soon,
This weekend something special happened. I returned to my home parkrun after what seemed like ages. I often see the wonderful TailChaser there and we had a lovely catch up chat before the run started. When the running gets underway I only usually see her for a fleeting moment when she laps me, but today was different. Tailchaser has a big race next weekend so she wanted a gentle run and I was to be her anchor, so we set off together towards the back of the 300+ pack of runners. She was delighted with the first lap exclaiming we were running at her marathon pace, I was nearly dying as it was a little quick for me so we agreed to slow down so I didn’t collapse. Tailchaser was not out of breath and chatted happily, I trotted on (determined not to let go of my responsibility) and only had to ask her to slow down once (or may be twice) more. As we approached the car park for the final time she told me I had quickened up, and with Tailchaser making engine revving noises we hit the cones and sprinted for the line. Finishing in a fit of giggles (not easy when you can hardly breathe) we got told off for getting out of line in the funnel. I love running with this amazing lady, she is so generous with her time and encouragement when we do slow runs together in the week. Running together at parkrun this week was extra special. I’m sure she will be fantastic in her big race next weekend and will be back to lapping me at parkrun in a couple of weeks time!
Sorry Shake-and-run , I’ve only just seen this, I didn’t get a notification 😩. Thank you for your wonderful words, I feel quite humbled 😘. If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be able to run slower, you’ve helped teach me the power of the slow run and that has been soooo important since I started this training. I will picture you and look at my lovely friendship band as I set off this Sunday, that will tell me not to race off with the crowds but to think, hold back and remember there’s still a way to go. Thank you for regularly dragging me out of bed (including this morning!). Ho you manage to go out for runs after your mahoosive cycle rides I’ll never know, you’re pretty amazing yourself! 🤗. Good luck with your Sportive xxx
Hi IP. Thank you for keeping the chat going; you are a superstar! Hopefully you will get to the bottom (no pun intended) of your troubles soon and then embark on a recovery plan in which you have confidence. The “not knowing” and waiting for appointments are the worst parts for me.
20 days to the GSR 😬. This morning, I did my part road/ part trail run which has a loop at the far end and some climbs on the way back (100m Total Ascent). 12k was enough and the pace 6:53/k seems to be par for the course now. So maybe that will be my GSR pace, allowing for the fact that GSR will be flatter, but I won’t have the course to myself.
Winter is coming! Today was shirt and zip up jacket weather (the latter did not stay zipped up for long on my run, but re zipping was needed for my walk home). Most significantly, this was the first bobble hat run of autumn. I am only leggings and gloves away from full winter clobber! Maybe I have gone too early……Happy running and happy healing to all 🙂
Whenever I see a post from you I get a fit of 🦋🦋🦋 BC. Only 20 days to go. Waaaaaa! 🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️
You’re peaking at just the right time, and you’ll love the GSR course and general atmosphere. Hope we don’t need winter clobber though. The first year I did it I almost expired with heat - doesn’t take much though. 🥵
Bound to be warmer down there Cheeky ...probably! I am a bit of a Jonah though. Every time we went to see our daughter Jill in Canada there was a drama: An earthquake, a local tornado warning and a storm which caused a 24-hour power cut.... you have been warned!
You’re in great shape for the GSR BC, just remember no fast sprints beforehand! But it does sound as if you’ve got your pacing sorted.
I agree with you on the weather. I wore a long sleeved top this morning for the first time this winter, although I think you’re much further north than I am so you’ll get winter first!
Luckily I saw the osteopath yesterday as he had a cancellation. Amazingly he didn’t even look at my back but looked at my feet and how they were placed. I walked out with zero aches or niggles and this morning ran a gentle 3K. It’s early days but 🤞I can at least run again 🤗
Great news IP 👏👏👏👏. Just like my physio; one squat, turn around and hey presto foot tendon problem diagnosed in 10 seconds flat. One of the wonders of running; the site of the pain is frequently some distance from the cause. Hip exercises for knee problems was another example….it sounds as though this osteopath is a keeper 👍
I am being very well behaved speed wise. There are no short runs in my plan now, so no temptation. 🤞
RunSkippyRun profile image
RunSkippyRunHalf Marathon
Hi IP,
Thanks for being here to do the weekly post. It is much appreciated. And here's hoping your back problem is resolved soon. Were the exercises that hurt your back from the physio?
I'm really pleased that my running is starting to come together again. The past nine months have been difficult in recovering from stuff but now I'm feeling the best I have in ages. (why do i feel that I'm about to jinx myself? 🤣). I am hoping to get in one last decent training run next weekend and, if I was undercooked for the GNR earlier this month, then to be more ... er not sure how to carry the metaphor on (cooked?, hard boiled? battered and deep fried like a Mars bar???) ... prepared before Munich HM (9 Oct).
Autumn is just starting to show some lovely colours hereabouts. Looking forward to some soft days and goldilocks running conditions (not too hot, not too ...).
Happy running everyone.
Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toRunSkippyRun
Haha I love the ideas of Goldilocks running conditions 😂 I just hope the three bears are nowhere to be seen 🙀Now, that would make us run faster!
It sounds as if you’re in tip top condition (perfectly ripe?) for Munich. You certainly don’t want to be overcooked or battered 😂 Can’t wait to read all about it.
Yes, it was exercises a physio gave me that seemed to worsen my back but I saw a brilliant osteopath yesterday and long story short, I ran a gentle 3K this morning and feel fine 🤞 Amazing.
RunSkippyRun profile image
excellent news re back and osteopath - I hope it continues to improve for you.
cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon
It’s always wonderful to have you hosting IP, but I’m sad you didn’t have better news about your back, hips and glutes. Your physio sounds great though, so hopefully you’ll be back fighting fit before tooooo long.
Did you say you were too late to defer your Bath place? I think that’s unfair if it’s for a legitimate reason, ie not just changing your mind. Hmph. 😠
All good here. My fitness it to be worked on ahead of the GSR, but I am definitely feeling better. I wouldn’t have been surprised to discover it was covid, but I tested negative all along. Weird. Anyway, my two 10k races helped clear various tubes, so I’m happy with that! GSR up next. 🥳🥳
Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply tocheekychipmunks
You always sound so cheerful and positive Munks it’s a pleasure to read your posts.
I’m really glad you're feeling better. A cold can hang around for ages so I bet it was just the after effects of that. But you're in fine fettle for the GSR 👍
The latest date for deferral for Bath was end of August and at that time I was feeling great with no niggles! Anyway, that’s life 🙂 It’ll happen.
Sorry to hear you're still having troubles IP, hope it improves soon 😘I've moved house! 😁Soooooooomuch stuff im aching from all the lifting and carrying and stressed too. Thanks IP its a much nicer house and seems a nice quiet area! I made it to the trail run!!! turns out it was 18 days since last run! 5.5 miles in the dusk and dark round footpaths, 6 of us having a chat,then pub for coffee and cheesy chips! Didn't rush back as had to go finish clearing the rental as cleaners in 1st thing, 1am bedtime 💤💤😫 xxx
Thanks again for the chat IP. So glad to read your update on the niggles. Fingers crossed you can move ahead now. Less than a week to my event and amazingly I have no niggles- this will be a first in over two years - and I am feeling blessed. Having said that, hubbie has just come down with a cold ... arrrghhh 😱
I'm trying to keep up with everyone's news here but am really busy with trips and guests still 🙈 Roll on 7th October when I will have no training plan and no guests - it's been lovely, but I think I will be very ready for that freedom 😍
Have a good week everyone 😊
Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply tolinda9389
Any secret on how you kept the niggles at bay Linda? Perhaps it’s the cross training of the cycling. Cycling is particularly good for the muscles around the knee.
But eek!!!! Hubby with a cold 🙀 Better move into the spare room quickly 🙂
It’s been really busy here recently, loads going on!
Having guests is lovely but it’s equally lovely when they leave 🙂
linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply toIrishprincess
I have been very diligent with my two rest days between runs and keeping the long runs slow. Besides cycling I have also done a LOT of walking. I have also had a regular monthly sports massage. That may have helped, or maybe I just got lucky!!! Hubby quickly volunteered to move out when he saw my face and heard my deathly ... 'Do you have a cold ... the week before my race?' 😱🤣
Haha I think your husband is a very wise man!
I think I need to walk a lot more. I used to but then have got out of the habit. But it is a great way of sourcing new run routes!
Whatever you’ve done has clearly worked for you, whey hey 👍
RunBrianRun profile image
RunBrianRunHalf Marathon
Hi IP I just thought I’d check in as I haven’t posted for a while. First off, I’m glad to read that your osteopath seems to have provided you with some relief for your back. That’s really good news!
As for me, I’m 2 weeks into winter training (that’s what the others call it anyway) I really don’t know what I’m doing yet, as I missed my coaching session last Thursday, as I had a tooth extraction. I think it’s infected as the pain is excruciating and getting worse, so I’ll go to the doctors today to get some antibiotics as I’m sure it’s infected.
Anyway, I’m still managing to get on with my morning routines and sprint sessions thanks to a large dose of ibuprofen and paracetamol, so it’s not all bad
One fabulous bit of good news this week is that, I have actually passed the 90% age grading for 100 metres in the V60-65 age group. A fellow club athlete reminded me to put my age in years and months on the calculator and voila 13.03 for 100 meters came out at 90.25% with my age in years and months on the day of the race.
Here’s to Winter Training, whatever that is and good luck to anyone out there running with a niggle, on the IC or just struggling. We have got this 💪👍
Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toRunBrianRun
Wow! Brian! A 90% age grading is phenomenal!!! And not just 90% but 90.25%! This news surely deserves a post all of its own……
A huge well done and many congratulations. You worked extremely hard for this and you deserve it in bucketloads.
Sorry about the tooth though, that sounds very painful. You probably need to tell the dentist too. Interestingly the osteopath I saw on Monday said that Ibuprofen works better in the morning and paracetamol works better in the evening. I’ve not heard this before but it might be worth a little search around to see if this is accurate.
He also said that I had strong hip flexors which I was delighted about. That’s all due to Pilates. He even knew my Pilates instructor. How are you getting on with your classes?
RunBrianRun profile image
RunBrianRunHalf Marathon in reply toIrishprincess
I’m happy to have achieved 90%. It’s definitely an achievement I am very proud of. I don’t like to boast so I’m happy for it to be tucked away in this thread. 😊
I booked onto Pilates but the classes were postponed. In the meantime I have added in planks to my morning routine and I’m already feeling much stronger around the abs and dare I say there’s even a hint of a 6 pack. Never thought I’d ever see that! 😂
Hello IP, I am so sorry to hear your back is still giving you trouble. I hope the osteopath can point you in the right direction.
I am currently on my hols and have managed to fit in a couple of tourist runs, but nothing major. My leg/lower bum is feeling a fair bit better but is still quite stiff so I’m stretching quite a bit too. I would really like to do a hilly run here, but it is really hilly, and I have a feeling I’d have to walk a bit of it, we shall see. Anyway, here’s a picture from yesterday’s run, it was lovely. All the best!
Sun coming up.
Hello Irishprincess , extra-special thanks for hosting this week's chat, since I'm the flake who couldn't 😳
Really sorry to hear that you're struggling with injuries again - it really is frustrating when you feel that you're regressing rather than progressing.
I've just got back from a motorhome holiday which involved plenty of tasting and buying wine, way too much eating, a reasonable amount of walking and very little running. Hate to think how much weight I've gained and daren't get on the scales to find out.
More positively, I did an 8k run yesterday with 196m elevation, and for the first time in three months my right leg didn't play up during or afterwards. Hoping this will continue so that I can start to regain some fitness and have more fun running again.
I'm shamelessly copying Frenc and adding a holiday photo, taken during a 10k mostly on trails through vineyards.
Happy running, all!
Looking over vineyards towards the village of Vézelay and its basilica.
Well, that’s what a holiday is for isn’t it? Re-charge the batteries and most likely eat and drink more then usual. But it does sound as if your leg appreciated the rest 🙂 Fingers crossed this will last for you.
I love to see holiday photos so thanks for this one. Looks beautiful 😍
