Weโve had a flurry of race activity over the weekend with so many of you running miles all over the place and getting some gorgeous blingy-bling ๐ ๐ Youโre each and every one awesome! Keep the race reports coming and the photos of your well-earned shiny stuff!
Although the weather has been mostly lovely in these parts with some warm days, thereโs no doubt that autumn is here in the UK. The leaves are turning gorgeous colours and itโs getting darker earlier. But what Iโve noticed most is that the weather is a tad โoooh-erโ on early mornings and this got me thinking that Iโll soon have to get out my gloves and beanie because itโs always my hands and ears that feel the chill the most and so a hat and gloves are the first things I reach for when the temperature drops. It can take a while for the rest of the winter kit to surface but as long as my ears and hands are covered Iโm toasty.
I do recall a time when I was about to head out for a winter run and I couldnโt find my faithful gloves (in those days I had only one pair!) and in the end I grabbed a black pair from a nearby drawer. Which was fine except for the pink fluffy bits ๐คฃNot exactly your average running gloves but they did the job and brought lots of smiles from passersby ๐
So, what do you first reach for when it gets colder? Any fluff involved? ๐ Tell us in the comments. And donโt forget to tell us how your running is going too.
Have a great week everyone!

๐ฅณ If you have an event coming up in October (or another one!) and you havenโt told us yet, or youโd like to know what our VRBs are up to then check out this post:
Hubby got stick on Strava when he posted our anniversary run. How romantic ๐คฃIt was my request though. I just canโt think of anything I would rather do now. Thank you C25K. We also had lunch in a very nice brewery and stayed in a posh hotel ๐๐ป
I donโt like wearing gloves until I canโt put it off any longer. Once I warm up I take them off and put them under my hat ๐
Iโve got several pairs but my faves are some purpley pink ROn Hill merino ones. Got a matching merino buff too which provides full head cover Great for the coldest of runs ๐โโ๏ธ๐ฅถ. Christmas or birthday gift so even better ๐
Iโve got a pair of Ron Hill winter running tights, covered in high viz, go faster stripes, which I love. Theyโre a more generous cut and very comfy Iโve got his Winter Radiance tights too which are gorgeous. Theyโre all black, but high viz, warmer knit. Great for winter races as theyโre so elegant ๐
The first step for me when things turned cold is to wear an additional top. It frequently comes off when I get into my run, but it is then handy to keep me warm if I stop for an alfresco flat white post run. Otherwise woolly hat and gloves and that is it, unless it is pouring down and then the waterproof top appears.
I have no idea where I am running wise. I did an HM on 14 September, but didnโt get back into regular running until 3 October. Since then I have run 4x5k, a 6.6k and an 8k. My 5kโs are speeding up; I plan to get back under 30 minutes. As for distance, I will try a 10k today and then maybe meander slowly back up to 10 miles over a few weeks. All a bit off the cuff, but my legs still feel pretty strong after the HM build up, so hopefully there will no IC spell in the offing!
I have a woolly bobble hat which I wear when itโs super duper cold, but I get hot really quickly and tend not to wear one 99% of the time in the winter. I deign to wear my hi viz jacket hood when itโs raining, but I canโt see when I turn round to check Flossie, as it doesnโt turn with me! ๐๐ ๐ณ
Running-wise, all my races are now done for the year, and I got a good haul of both real and virtual race bling. Iโve decided I WILL run the HUHM in November after all though, but Iโm going to experiment and Jeff the whole 13.1 miles. Iโm a confirmed non-walker, but Iโd vowed never to run more than 10k on my common ever again, especially when it gets soupy. However FOMO took over at the GSR yesterday so thatโs what Iโm going to do! Iโm curious as to what Jeffing will do to my time anyway. Itโs quite exciting! ๐
I honestly donโt know IP, so Iโll put a post up at some point and ask experienced Jeffers for advice! After this week the common is going to be hideous, I know it. ๐ญ
Just started working my way through the race reports and I have already been inspired to sign up for the Great South Run! Probably should stop reading before I bankrupt myself ๐
I'm just back from a fabulous weekend in Oxford for the half marathon, where I got to meet up with the gorgeous linda9389 !!! I am now looking forward to my autumn/winter training. I like the autumny coolness and will remain in shorts and vest for the foreseeable, but when it gets proper cold the dreaded capris will come out of the cupboard...
How fab for you and Linda to meet up!!! I hope there will be a few posts coming up with all the details ๐ Iโm sure running through the streets of Oxford was so memorable ๐
I know what you mean about reading these posts and then signing up, itโs always so temptingโฆ.. perhaps we really need an HU only real-life event!
Did you run Oxford then? Lovely city to running in I imagine ๐
I wanted to run in shorts yesterday but my psoriasis is awful. I look like I have comic spots - like Minnie Minx trying to get off school with measles โบ๏ธ
Awful condition. Have you tried daily turmeric for it? I was blown away by the food hospital programme that basically cured a young boy plagued with it with just a spoonful each day. It was amazing to see!
Iโve had it for 30 years and as you say, it does itโs own thing ๐Iโve found mine has really cleared , not gone, since I went gluten free. Thatโs sorted all my other issues too but thatโs another story. It was tough at first but Iโm used to it now and itโs worth it. Iโm going to give the turmeric a go too.
I just watched it. The lad has guttate psoriasis same as me
I am eating those foods already which is good! ๐ avocado, nuts, oily fish, omega 3 fish oil cap a day. No biscuits it says, which is not something I buy so doing ok there Pizza was not recommended but if I have one I make it. Rarely though. Iโve got Dr Rupyโs book which has some good recipes in. I think my husband putting the heating on hasnโt I helped. I keep turning it off ๐
In winter I wear the same vest and 5/8 trousers as in summer, but with an ear-band to prevent the wind from getting in. On a very cold day I'll add a pair of fingerless gloves which I'll probably take off after ten or twenty minutes.
Occasionally I'll wear a lightweight coat, but not as a coat, I tie it around my waist. With a coat tied around my waist nobody shouts out at me that I am running in the cold without a coat.
Itโs tricky because I do warm up quite quickly so I end up taking my gloves off after a while but I do need them to begin with.
We really need a wardrobe person to run alongside us with various changes of clothes ๐
Love reading the race report, makes me get an itch to do a race myself. Except I'm a bit too slow for that, probably not being able to finish within the set ending time. So for now I'll just keep it at reading reports.
As for the running, it's going well, though I can't get 3 runs in 1 week every week due to life intervening. I do get 2 runs in though and I am slowly building up to my first 10 miler. 2 weekends ago I reached 13K, last weekend I did a 11K and the plan is for coming weekend to reach 13K or 14K and to reach 16.1K the weekend after. Maybe a bit risky and totally not within the 10% rules, but I really kinda want this over with. That I have done a ten miler and can go back to my trusted 10K's.
I believe the 10% rule applies to your total weekly mileage rather than just your long run distance. Maybe you aren't breaking the rules after all ๐
Niiiiccceee gloves! I'm not sure I have any fave winter gear that I look forward to wearing ๐ค I do have some goto winter tights but having found a pair of shorts I love this year, I'm very reluctant to stop wearing those now (although that might change once the Oxford photos are released ๐). I think I'll be getting my winter bike gear out first - favourite item being my buff(s) - to give my feet and leg a bit of a break. Have a great week everyone.
Your feet and legs definitely need a holiday ๐ and you love your bike don't you?
Donโt talk about race photos ๐ I think Iโve had only a couple of decent ones from all my races. In all the rest my reaction is, โdo I really look like that when I run?!!โ
The weather is absolutely on the turn...๐๐ป I've used my super thin gloves a couple of times already, plain purple silk, which if I get too warm just come off and on short runs I'll just hold onto. Still in shorts, reluctant to get leggings out. I'm doing lots of short, very early runs just now, so very dark. Upgraded my headtorch but not really broken out the real winter gear just yet. I actually miss my running jacket a bit so won't mind getting that back into rotation ๐๐ป๐คฃ
Ha well, yesterday I ran with my NB insulated run tights and gloves for the first time this season. It has been 6-8 degrees in the morns this week so winter feels near. โ๏ธ โ๏ธ
Nice gloves! I just bought some running gloves, but got them for teaching forest school as I usually only wear gloves for a short while on a run then my hands get hot!! I run a lot in the dark this time of year, so usually wear my high vis waterproof (breathable)... then end up tying round my waist but at least it still makes me bright! I find I need something warmer to head out but it quickly comes off!
Autumn coming !it certainly is very rainy here got soaked through most days lately ! I've got 2 pairs of running gloves one with cool unfolding mitten option and reflective! My pal knitted me a hat for last years birthday which is nice and snug and quite thin which I like better than my proper running hat!:Just tried out my new night time run jacket on a doggy walk. Not waterproof but loving the reflective pattern and a ยฃ3 bargain on 2nd hand site ๐xxx
2 runs so far this week, nice splashy puddle run with 2 friends this morning
In training for 10k in southsea on the 31st Oct ๐
It's been unseasonably warm here, shorts and T-shirt weather. However for the past few days temperatures have crashed to just above freezing first thing, so leggings and long-sleeved tops are about to appear again. Cool max socks will be swapped for warmer ones too.
However there are variations on that theme too! For a short run when temperatures aren't likely to rise much while I'm out, I'll wear leggings and T-shirt. But for a longer run, when it's going to get significantly warmer, I prefer shorts plus long-sleeved zip top over a T-shirt, then I can remove the top layer.
Of course, this would be much easier if two of my favourite long-sleeved tops and numerous other items weren't currently reposing about 180 km away, because I forgot to pick up my drop bag after the maratrail! A friend rescued it from the organisers' office, but I won't be collecting it until my next working trip to Lyon at the start of December.
Oh no! Thats a pain about your drop bag. But so easily done. I read somewhere that apparently after a long run we can get a bit confused and forget things! I once forgot where Iโd arranged to meet my husband after a race. Mind you it was only a 10K so nowhere close to your distance ๐ Gawd knows what my brain would be like after a FM ๐ค
Layers are good for colder running because at least we can strip along the way ๐
It was 5ยฐ-7ยฐ, depending on which thermometer I looked at, when I was getting ready today. Leggings and T-shirt, I thought. Bad, bad decision. Temperature rose 10ยฐ while I was out and I ended up melting.
Forgetting my drop bag was so stupid. True, it was only my second event, and there'd been no drop bag facility at my first one, but I'd got a list in my mind when I went off to the finishing area. Collect T-shirt, collect beer, collect post-race snack (more like a mini picnic!) and collect drop bag.
Only, having gone round and done the first three, I spotted one of the local MPs, who's been helpful re my French nationality application, so I waylaid him. Then a lovely woman I know via work, but usually only see one a year, came over and said "Is that really you?!" and was super-nice to me. By the time we'd finished chatting I realised I'd been keeping my husband and dog (who doesn't like crowds or noise) waiting for ages, so I found them and we set off for home, 50km away. Didn't realise about the bag until I got home!
