Another 8am start with my running pal. He had about 9k in mind whereas I wanted to reach 14k in my build up to 10 miles. We had a couple of drinking walks in the first 9k( no watches were paused!) and then he headed for home. I fell into my “happy stride”between 7:00 and 7:11 and felt so good that I went on to 16:20k in bang on two hours. I forgot that 10 miles is 16:09 ! So I was feeling a bit pleased as I walked past an older couple as I headed towards the cafe, until the man, who was struggling to walk with a stick bless him, said “ should you be running?” 😬 What do you say? I said I had just finished 10 miles and felt really good……which produced a indecipherable “humph.” I moved on…feeling very old ..
However, rescue was at hand!
A guy in the cafe had us all laughing with his story about a little girl who wanted to stroke his dog. Her mother said that she had to ask if the dog would be ok with that…so the little girl solemnly walked up to the dog and said “ can I give you a stroke please ?” Equilibrium restored 🙂

Heyyyy, check out Mr 10 Miles! Woohoo, fabulous BC, you must have been feeling great. 👊 But what a cheeky person saying that to you! What a nerve. 😅
5k PR absolutely enough for me today in the ☀️ 🥵 I haven’t forgotten about my promise to try Jeffing at Ashton Court by the way, but it’s the Balloon Fiesta there this weekend 🎈🎈
That little girl story is a hoot! What do you say to that? 🤣🤣
Hi Beachcomber66 well done on your run. As you say as the older guy was struggling walking in the heat maybe he was worried about anyone running in this heat as some people do suffer adverse effects like heat stroke/ heat exhaustion etc regardless of their age. 🤗
I will never understand the attraction of race bling. Yes, I'm super-proud of my trail marathon finisher t-shirt, but I'd still have run the event even if I'd got nothing for it other than the satisfaction of completing. It's about the experience, not about getting more stuff, my house is messy and cluttered enough as it is!
I was keen to acquire some bling early on; probably in part a reflection of my otherwise largely trophy devoid existence. Now I am just pleased to be able to run after all of my injuries.
I reckon he was just envious that you can run, especially in the heat. Back to 10 miles and 2 months still to go 👏👏 My HM is on 25 September, the thinking being that the GSR would be a doddle after that. If you feel you can do it, go for it. 1km a week more and you could do a HM at the end of September then taper back to 10 miles. Doesn’t that sound bonkers? 😜
It does sound crazy! Last September’ HM was terrible, not just because of the circumstances. I have got far more Ks in my legs this year. Just a question of making sure that I don’t overdo it and spoil the GSR. My legs will tell me! I am only going to run twice next week…bit of a breather needed.
😂😂I’ll let you know when UpTheStanley thinks he’s too old BC, I think he’s got a year or 2 on you. We had 2 over 80s at Ludlow parkrun today, and the only reason I came in before them, was 1 had his grandson with him, and the other stopped to let his dog have a rest and water.
Hi Dexy5. It was a bit cooler at 8am when we started our run and we have plenty of tree cover. I had to get up at 6:30 to be ready to start at 8 though! High risk that I will doze off soon!
Great run Beachcomber66 , and what an obnoxious comment from that man. Even if he were concerned about the heat or your age "Should you...?" implies disapproval, not genuine interest in your welfare, as he well knew.
Love the little girl and dog story - full marks to all concerned!
