So here we are, winter is being pushed aside as Spring makes itself felt. Cold starts give way to warm and bright days. Shorts are at the ready!

Having finally been able to leave the headtorch for any runs after 5.30, we're approaching the 26th when early runs will be plunged back into darkness...๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿป

I really struggle when that happens as my body cannot catch up with the change.

But at least we are moving into Spring fully with Summer on the horizon. Time is marching on, with or without us ๐Ÿคฃ

Don't forget to adjust your clocks Sat night/Sun morning!

How are things progressing for you, or not?

Did the NY resolutions work out (if you made them)?

If you're new here, this is a great place to introduce yourself and join in.

Dark or light, keep running, or at least moving, keep trying ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜

Hi GoGo_JoJo & other running superheroes,

Good to see the blue skies returning for you all.

Autumn is here for us which will mean less running at 5am, and hopefully more time for some longer runs.

I feel like my annual running goal of 2022 km has not got off to the best start with a drop in mileage due to the start of the marathon plan, and being out for over a week due to the whole family minus me having Covid.

Pilates once a week has been a total failure.

34 miles on the marathon plan to do this week. Might just shoot for 30 miles and see how I feel.

Happy week everyone โค๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

We passed through the equinox yesterday afternoon.

If I can beat the snooze button gremlin, I'll be out running around 8am again soon. The lighter mornings and evenings have allowed me to do more walking too.

Having reached 24km a week ago, I've eased off a little bit. I'll probably go for the MM next month when my legs are feeling back on top form.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜ I don't need a snooze button, I always wake before my alarm regardless of how early. Kind of annoying! ๐Ÿคฃ

Yesterday was positively spring-like. My garden tells me every day ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒน

Iโ€™ve had a friend stay for a few days and after she left I headed out for a long run and it was glorious ๐Ÿ˜Žโ€ฆ.. except for my niggly back โ˜น๏ธ Itโ€™s been quite stiff and sore in the mornings and Iโ€™m trying to work out what is causing it. But yesterday on my run I thought perhaps it might be my shoes as theyโ€™ve got about 650K on them. Iโ€™ll try my other pair to see if that sorts it out ๐Ÿคž

Iโ€™ve also had a tooth issue but we wonโ€™t go there as itโ€™s a long, boring saga but itโ€™s affecting my eating which indirectly impacts my running ๐Ÿ™„

In other news, yesterday was my ninth runniversary of starting C25K! I normally post something epically long but I seemed to have said it all over the years and had nothing much different to say ๐Ÿ˜‚ a first for me!

Despite the few wee issues my running is going well and Iโ€™ve already gone off-plan for Bath training but itโ€™s all goodโ€ฆโ€ฆ

Have a great week everyone x

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Irishprincess

Well, Iโ€™ve experimented and itโ€™s the gardening ๐Ÿ™„ The running has clearly made it worse (all that jarring ๐Ÿ˜ฉ) so Iโ€™m giving it a rest for a week. Itโ€™s pretty good timing actually as I flew out to Ireland yesterday and didn't bring my running kit.

And Bath HM has been postponed yet again until October soโ€ฆโ€ฆ. no pressure for the training.

A flat white and a toasted tea cake has to be a celebration. My first 5k since 25 November. It was slow, as in 7:06/k, and even then VO2 max docked me a point; it doesnโ€™t do encouragement when you need it most does it ? But, no swelling of the foot after a week of building up from 1k; so far so good is my verdict. A few 5ks with some slightly faster stretches built in is next I think, before upping the distance. It was just so good to be out in the sun, plodding along and taking in the scenery. A one shirt run day, but an extra layer was needed before and after. We are a bit behind up here !๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Jo! Thanks for hosting the Chat this week ๐Ÿ˜ Hope you manage to get through the daylight savings debacle in one piece xxx

Venting. I've been having a rotten time recently, I've been ill for weeks with some sort of hideous non-Covid disease with a cough, have been trying to keep my fitness up on my indoor bike, but then I managed to break its chain! And last week I had to pause all activity because I had tonsillitis!! (Actually, I carried on with my strength work) The dreaded tonsil blobs have now gone, but my throat is still sore. But I can't lie around forever so it was an easy 5k for me today, which wasn't fun at all with a sore throat and headwind ๐Ÿ˜ซ Fed up. Still, the sun's shining! And I wished I'd worn shorts for my run ๐Ÿ˜‚๐ŸŒธ

Have a great week, everyone xxx

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to GoGo_JoJo

Oh that's great news! I considered calling the doc about my throat, but it was far from the worst bout of tonsillitis I've ever had, so I thought it would probably go away in less time than it would have taken for me to get antibiotics and finish the course. Luckily this tactic seems to have paid off ๐Ÿ˜‚

Hello hello GoGo_JoJo ! Well youโ€™ve really made me think. I was so happy during my last early run - yay no head torch ๐Ÿ”ฆ ๐Ÿ˜Š. But this time last year Iโ€™d only really just completed C25K and certainly wasnโ€™t brave enough to contend with running early in the dark, so what is this clocks changing malarkey all about? ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ. I thought Iโ€™d put my torch to bed for the duration. I guess Iโ€™ll have to get it back out for a few more flings! All in all though running early and in the dark has been one of the best things I decided to do for myself and for my running - Iโ€™ve really enjoyed it, that cocooned feeling and quiet roads. So yes, still running, still trying! All the best ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š.

It's amazing how brave and confident we get ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜ I was well pleased to be able to leave my torch more often than not but yea, we'll need them again for a few more weeks yet... keep trying, that's the best way to success ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜

Good morning JoJo!

I too hate the change when the clocks go forward, and also, why is it nearly always on Motherโ€™s Day?! Why do we get an hour less on Motherโ€™s Day? Ok, whinge overโ€ฆ

I didnโ€™t do any NY resolutions. Tbh, thereโ€™s so much out of our control these days it seems even more pointless than it used to be. Iโ€™m quite happy plodding along giving myself the occasional challenge.

Talking of challenges, Iโ€™m finally coming down off the ceiling after getting a LM place. Iโ€™m making myself train properly now, I even ran a proper slow run on Sunday and I felt remarkably recovered yesterday considering how hard it felt (Garmin told me 4 days recovery! ๐Ÿคฃ). Iโ€™ve got Hansonโ€™s First Marathon book to guide me as well as Cheesecake Runner (?) on Facebook so iโ€™m getting lots of advice. Itโ€™s certainly mixing things up, which after 4 years of doing pretty much the same thing is probably a good thing.

Now to sort the nutrition outโ€ฆthatโ€™s going to be the biggest challenge I think but possibly easier with summer coming? To save time, Iโ€™m thinking lots of salad, pulses and protein in easy to grab and go amounts in the fridge for the whole family.

Any tips gratefully sought! xx

GoGo_JoJo profile image
GoGo_JoJoUltramarathon in reply to TailChaser

Woohoo, exciting stuff! Yes, that's a good challenge.

I'm a fan of homemade flapjacks, that kind of thing. I've never done gels etc. I prefer real food. Just the act of chewing tells your body its getting fed.

Mixing things up is always good, we get into a rut without even realising it sometimes.

You can do it!! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserMarathon in reply to GoGo_JoJo

Hmmm flapjacks ๐Ÿ˜‹ excellent idea, thank you. Iโ€™ve had to stop the gels as my tummy doesnโ€™t seem to like them anymore. Love a piece of flapjack so definitely going to do that, maybe with some concentrated ingredientsโ€ฆ oh brownies too, although they may get a bit sticky in the summer months.

I can! Iโ€™ve visualised myself running down The Mall so many times now I just have to! ๐Ÿ˜

Iโ€™ve just read the plant based athlete by Matt Frazier & Robert Cheeke. Iโ€™m not vegan although donโ€™t eat meat or fish. I found it super helpful as it has got lots of day in the life examples of what plant based athletes eat whilst training. Pre fuel and post workout replenishment. Mary Schneider, Sophie Mullins to name just a couple. Itโ€™s been the best book to give me confidence that Iโ€™m fuelling long distance training correctly ๐Ÿ˜

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserMarathon in reply to RunWillie

Thanks RW, I am trying to get our diets more plant based. Itโ€™s a bit tricky when eldest kitten comes home from uni as he doesnโ€™t like pulses but Iโ€™ve been sneaking lentils into spag bol and that seems to have gone down well so I might do a full blown lentil spag bol when heโ€™s next home. I will definitely look into those books, thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š

Hello GoGo_JoJo and VRBs! Sorry to hear that some of you are suffering, wishing you all a speedy recovery.

Clocks also go forward here this weekend and I'm hoping it might help reset my body clock, which retirement has sent a bit haywire.

Other than that, Spring is sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder how my Ghosties is? Yes, I finally tried out the Ghost 14s that I bought in the sales a couple of months ago. Only over 3k and 5k, but very happy with them, and I even forced myself to run a bit faster.

I didn't make any NY resolutions, and I have no events in mind, let alone training plans, I'm much too lazy. Though I am taking part in an elevation challenge (not Strava, another group) including walks as well as runs, so hoping to do at least 4000m vertical in March. The dog is wondering why we keep heading up hills instead of taking flatter, more direct paths home!

Happy training to those who are, and fun-filled running to all!

Hi Jo, yes we had our time change already and Iโ€™m still adjusting. As for running I think Berlin is off the table now and so I will focus on my local Halliburton trail race in Sept. I have some training plans kicking around but nothing too firmed up yet. I might opt into another race in the spring or summer still, depending on what life allows. Looking forward to getting out in more sunlight in the coming months. Just got a new pair of Hoka Cliftons for road use. So far so good.
