I visited a podiatrist recommended by Tasha99 yesterday; good call Tasha!
He had a great piece of diagnostic kit which required me to walk over a screen placed on the floor a number of times. The data collected was then processed through a laptop and bish bash bosh there were technical images of the soles of my feet, with moving indicators showing how my feet were moving from impact to push off. My left foot was fine, but my right showed an interruption between impact and push off. There it was, in full colour, evidence of the impact of the problem which has caused all of the swelling.
The podiatrist thinks that one of a couple of heavy traumas has displaced the cuboid bone (first lateral tarsal I think) or at least made it less stable, and rest plus strengthening exercises are what is needed to sort out the damage to ligaments. He said the blood supply to ligaments, like tendons, is poor so they just take a long time to heal. If it is not clear after a few weeks, he will design orthotics for me to limit the over pronation in both feet. Probably my regular walks managing an excitable heavy on lead Molly haven’t helped….but she is good for mental health!!
So, at least I know what I am dealing with. In fairness the physio’s advice was to strengthen the same area, it is just good to be able to see the problem and give it a name! I am more confident that I am on the right track, I understand why it is taking so long and I have a time limited fall back plan. Feels like progress🙂
