I visited a podiatrist recommended by Tasha99 yesterday; good call Tasha!
He had a great piece of diagnostic kit which required me to walk over a screen placed on the floor a number of times. The data collected was then processed through a laptop and bish bash bosh there were technical images of the soles of my feet, with moving indicators showing how my feet were moving from impact to push off. My left foot was fine, but my right showed an interruption between impact and push off. There it was, in full colour, evidence of the impact of the problem which has caused all of the swelling.
The podiatrist thinks that one of a couple of heavy traumas has displaced the cuboid bone (first lateral tarsal I think) or at least made it less stable, and rest plus strengthening exercises are what is needed to sort out the damage to ligaments. He said the blood supply to ligaments, like tendons, is poor so they just take a long time to heal. If it is not clear after a few weeks, he will design orthotics for me to limit the over pronation in both feet. Probably my regular walks managing an excitable heavy on lead Molly haven’t helped….but she is good for mental health!!
So, at least I know what I am dealing with. In fairness the physio’s advice was to strengthen the same area, it is just good to be able to see the problem and give it a name! I am more confident that I am on the right track, I understand why it is taking so long and I have a time limited fall back plan. Feels like progress🙂

Too right Beachcomber ! We’ve just lost some ridge tiles which landed on the pavement outside. Thank goodness they missed a car and no one was walking by.
The things we learn about our bodies, eh BC? That sounds positive though and at least you know what you’re dealing with and, as you say, can see progress.
Those little pads we walk across can tell us so much 👍
They do IP, and the programme can do a lot of the design work for the orthotics too. The podiatrist will make final adjustments based on experience….you can’t programme everything into a computer! Stay safe today…🙂
😂😂😂 I was amazed! The main benefit of the images for me was that they showed where the problem was. The pain and swelling was quite diffuse….I couldn’t out my finger on the injured spot…I can now! 🙂
Love that the hi-tech mat showed the detail. Nothing like a dodgy foot to make one appreciate the need for specifics! Glad you’ve got a Plan going now. 👏🏼
So is Molly! She wants to see everyone and divert to the cafe......38k of determined dog with a low centre of gravity ....no contest! Good cafe partner though!
So good to understand the problem and have someone to help you through. What sort of length of time on strengthening exercises have you been prescribed?
He is ok about me trying short runs and building it up….no speeding or downhill aeroplanes! I think that strengthening exercise will just be a parallel process for a while. If it is not fixed in 4/6 weeks I will go back. Looking out of the window, it doesn’t look very tempting anyway!
I was really impressed. He does some work with professional footballers so I felt that I was in good hands. Probably a bit late for the start of a new career 🙂
Technology is a wonderful thing BC - especially when it comes up with conditions as wonderfully named as that! You are now a man with a plan, thank goodness! 👍
To be able to see something which demonstrates the problem and its location is really helpful. I was aware of pain and widespread swelling, but couldn’t pin down the root of the trouble. The location also corresponds with the place I suffered trauma…..so I know that is the cause rather wear and tear etc. Wonderful piece of kit!
Good to have a clearer idea of what you need to do. Sounds an amazing bit of tech, I have never heard of that! All the best for your recovery, oh and tell Molly to stop pulling ! 😂🐶🐾
The cost was exactly the same as I pay for a normal physio appointment, so not an expensive option at all.
As for Molly, I have had to spend the last 5 months converting Molly from a lead free beach dog into a lead trained walker in the woods. She is getting better with every walk and is now totally chilled with nearly every dog she meets up there…..so she is pulling less; except when she gets within range of the café where everyone spoils her.I am feeling much more optimistic about getting back to running.
