Uh-oh it’s not looking good for my achilles

A couple of weeks ago on a long run I pulled up with what I thought was cramp. With some stretching and slowing down the pace I was able to finish. Though in retrospect that probably wasn’t the best idea. The days that followed have indicated that all is not well. 😞 Having spent the last couple of weeks mostly resting and stretching I’ve only managed a couple of very short runs, but the calf/achilles pain afterwards has been excruciating. So I’m now resigned to the prospect of the injury couch with trying to keep mobile and doing eccentric heel drops and other calf strengthening exercises a few times a day. I’ve read doing some gentle short running can aid recovery, but does anyone know if it’s best to wait until all discomfort has gone? As a 3 or 4 times a week runner I’m missing it already, but I don’t want to aggravate things which might mean full recovery takes longer.

Sorry you are injured - it’s horrible! Without knowing what your injury is exactly, it’s hard to know what the best action is. Achilles can be troublesome though. Seeing a good sports physio would enable you to find out exactly what you have done and they would advise you on recovery and rehab. I have paid for a physio after two separate injuries in the past and she really was worth her weight in gold! Good luck.🤞🙂

Thank you. I do have a good physio nearby. He was helpful last time I had an issue. So probably worth trying to see him.

You could rest completely for a week to give any inflammation time to settle down Then re-evaluate 🙂

I say that as I hurt myself recently, and started with the heel drops etc, and stretching, but it made it worse. So I rested instead.

I did a race today and fingers crossed I’m mended 🤞

I hope you’ll soon be back to running buy you may have to be patient for a week or so 🙂

Thanks for the tips. The exercises are okay and walking is fine, so I’ll continue with those and and do some yoga for calfs & ankles. A bit of a break from running is probably due anyway. Though it’s hard sitting watching folk enjoying their autumn running. Hopefully it’s not too long. Glad to hear you’re back out running!

Yoga is brilliant I reckon 🙂

A small break in running won’t cause any loss of fitness so don’t worry 🙂🏃‍♂️

I’m back running and raced today🏃‍♀️
