★ Are you aiming for a Half Marathon this Autumn?

We notice from replies to Irish Princess’s latest weekly chat post that lots of us are aiming for a half marathon this autumn. For some it may be the first, whilst others are veterans with many previous half marathons to their name. But right now we’re all in the same boat; either choosing a plan or just starting out in the early weeks of training!!!

★ A new group for autumn 2021

We’d love to set up another HM group so we can once again share our experiences, our questions and our support.

It will be slightly different to previous years insofar as we won’t be writing weekly posts for the group; instead please do let us know how it’s going in the weekly chat or in posts of your own (particularly if you have specific questions, issues or useful information to share).

★ Lots of useful information from previous groups

There’s lots of info in previous group posts which you can search for on this forum, but there are two pinned posts that you may find particularly useful (especially if this will be your first HM):

Half Marathon training plans 😍 How to find a good plan for YOU! healthunlocked.com/marathon...

and

Training for a Half Marathon; from choosing a training plan to hanging your bling 🏅 healthunlocked.com/marathon... (collated from the spring 2020 HM group)

★ Tell us your plans; we'll set up a group list

To kick the group off, just let us know what you are aiming for:

- The date and name of your event (if you have one in mind)

- The training plan you are following (whether you’ve chosen an existing one or made up your own - or perhaps you’re winging it this time!)

- Whether this is your first HM

We’ll add your details to an autumn 2021 group list so you can look for ideas or maybe see if anyone is doing the same event as you! You can find the list here: docs.google.com/spreadsheet...

★ Another virtual HUHM event?

Finally, we wondered if anyone would be interested in another HU virtual event this autumn? If there is enough interest we will put something together again. Just let us know in the comments below!

So, to anyone aiming for a HM this autumn, let us know what you're aiming for in the comments below, good luck, have fun and remember, you’re never alone! Keep sharing!!!

Here's to running and having fun!!!

I'll kick this off with my event - I have Oxford HM on 17th October (I had it on my calendar as 10th, it was only when adding myself to this group list that I realised my mistake, oops!!!).

Not too sure about a plan, but - as I currently have the luxury of 16 weeks to train - I'm considering this Coach Mag 16 week HM plan coachmag.co.uk/half-maratho... No, I'm not aiming for sub 2 hour, so I will be adjusting the recommended paces!!!

This will be my fourth real HM event if it goes ahead (and at my third time of trying Oxford - attempt one was abandoned for a stress fracture, attempt two because of Covid, so here's to third time lucky).

Let's do this!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to linda9389

I've got the Oxford Half too!

No idea about a plan, I've got the Brighton Marathon five weeks before. I'll think about it later 😂

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to roseabi

I'm almost certainly ditching my ultra now, so hopefully won't be as broken for Oxford as I'd expected. You'll either be broken or you'll storm the half ... I'm betting on the latter 😍

Aw thanks for the vote of confidence! 😍 After a couple of dodgy ones I'm a bit phased by half marathons at the moment 😂

Hi Linda. Hope all’s well with you. Really pleased to see you doing this group. Thank you as always for organising.

I am running the much-delayed (over a year now) London Landmarks HM on 1st August. My first official event, even though I’ve now done the distance a few times. Just five weeks to go!

Good luck training for Oxford!

I’m kicking myself this week, as I ran 18km without realising it, when I could have gone a bit further and ticked off my HM.

Our town’s annual HM has been binned for good 🤨🙄 The replacement race is 10k, which I will probably do to support the event. Bit miffed as no-one got asked which they’d prefer 🙁

Uphill finish 😁

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to misswobble

Still, looking on the bright side it gives you something to do in the next week or two!!!Shame about the local event though, must've been great having an HM on the doorstep.

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathon in reply to linda9389

It started off as a marathon! That was binned amid some turmoil over the route.

The HM was then very popular, but the new organiser wants more runners to make it more inclusive, and sees 10km as the way to achieve it. I hope it works out as he and his staff put so much effort into it

Strolling down the road to the start line is lovely. The race won’t go past my house anymore though so I’ve lost my supporters on the street. My road was “the party zone” which was a real boost between 10 and 11k

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to misswobble

Sounds like it was amazing! Still, the uphill being after only 10k is something of a bonus ...

Big Half for me - postponed to 22 August so not really Autumn, could be a hot summer HM. I have 8 weeks to get fit again after my bike crash 3 weeks ago and I tried my new hydration vest yesterday on a hot sweaty 10k.Today my thighs are killing me, I'm so out of condition after a 2 week break from exercise.

I'm using the plan that Big Half sent me. It's more of a beginners plan so suited to how I feel right now.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Langley-Loper

Ooh that sounds tough. It won't last though, you'll get the fitness back before you know it! Good luck though. I just unpacked a new hydration vest - fingers crossed I don't have the same chafing issues with this one!!!

Langley-Loper profile image

decathlon.co.uk/p/trail-run... bought this one. Spent a long time adjusting it in front of the mirror before I set off with the bladder about half full. No chafing on the first test outing!

linda9389 profile image

That's a good start! I settled for the Aonijie one that lots of people seem to have used although the Decathlon one was the other one I considered.

Yay so happy to read this post! Thank you 😃 I'm training (again) for my first HM, no event planned. I'm on the NRC plan and according to them I've just finished the '11 weeks to go' set of runs. Would love a HUHM virtual event if possible since I missed the last one due to injury but I guess a lot of people will have signed up for actual events now that things are opening up a bit more.Good luck everyone!

I'm inching again towards the HM distance having had a setback in late April (tight hamstrings and pulled adductor).

There's no event. It is purely a personal challenge, extending the long weekend runs using the 10% rule, whilst doing three or four shorter runs during the week.

I've been doing a few 10km runs over the last few weeks, then last week I did 12km, and yesterday 15km.

Next weekend is planned as 16.1km (10 miles), the following at 18km. I've done both of those distances before.

The one after that is planned as 20km with the possibility of plodding the extra 1.1km to make it a HM if I'm feeling up to it.

The weekend after may see the resumption of parkruns...

Brilliant timing! I’ve been putting together an actual plan for the first time ever and worked on it yesterday, a proper hand written/drawn week-by-week plan 😇

I’ll post it when it’s finished as I promised some folks here that I would.

Count me in please Linda. I’ve got the Bristol HM on 19 September and will hopefully meet up with cheekychipmunks at last 🙂 Although I’ve done a few HM’s on my own this will be my first official event.

I’ve never followed a plan to completion apart from C25K and I don’t really get on with them so this will be a new experience for me 🙂

But being part of a group again will be the icing on the cake. Thanks for organising 😍

Interested in that bit! I've been adjusting the ones in my plan but there's not a lot of science behind my attempts 😀

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to linda9389

I’m looking at the RW training pace calculator plus my own recent stats plus and old ASICS plan I found hanging around…. I’m getting a bit confused…. ☹️

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Irishprincess

I looked at what GHMP I would need to get a PR (by a millisecond or two, nothing pushy). But then I guessed a similar adjustment to steady and temp paces as defined by the plan; and the tempo looks way beyond me! so either, I calculated wrong, or I'll improve as I go or ... I'm not going to PB 😕😀 Maybe it's time for me to look at another plan that doesn't make me face up to anything just yet!!!

IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to linda9389

If I don’t like the look of the numbers, I try something else 😂 which is not what you’re supposed to do is it?

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to linda9389

It’s so frustrating Linda. I’m making an appointment to see my podiatrist because I can’t work out where else mine are coming from. I’m not running long runs, I’ve got new shoes, I had a sports massage, I’ve rolled, stretched, etc. He “reconditioned” my orthotics in January but I couldn’t see him face to face for a treadmill analysis so I’m thinking perhaps that’s the reason for the niggles. They maybe need a little adjustment. I’m praying that’s the reason….

“Enjoy” your massage 😏

Hi cheekychipmunks I think I'd recognise you although it might be tricky if there are a lot of runners around. Must admit, people often seem to recognise me more easily than I do them. I've never met Irishprincess so I'd struggle to recognise her.

Still haven't heard back from ParkRun about the marshalling. I'm down as timekeeper for Pomphrey Hill at the end of the month (literally, on the 31st), so I'll try and find out what's happening then. Hopefully by then, I'll be able to run down to Pomphrey.

Yay Linda, count me in (again!) 👏👏 As Irishprincess has already mentioned, I’m entered in the Bristol HM on September 19th. I was originally down for the 10k, but transferred to the HM a) to meet IP at last, and b) because Bath has postponed yet again to March next year.

I’m actually following a proper plan this time round. I picked the NRC one which is 14 weeks, but it popped me in at 12 weeks to go when I input my race date. I’ve just completed W1 and so far, so good. I have a weird running week coming up as we’re going away for a few days to Devon. I’ll take my gear and see what I can do (hilly Dartmoor might be a challenge!) Still, I ran the maximum 5 runs this week, so if this week ends up being less, it won’t matter too much. 😀

Thank you Stephen, but this is the first plan I’ve followed since the Magic 10 and I’ve run HM distance several times. I’m curious to see if this plan makes a difference. It’s certainly nice being told which run to do next. It takes away the guesswork! 😅

linda9389 profile image

Fabulous! I looked at the NRC plans but I don't want to run 5 times a week and it didn't seem to be a changeable variable so I quickly gave up! Have a lovely time away and enjoy your running tourism!

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply to linda9389

Thanks Linda. It does say it’s flexible and you don’t need to run 5 times. 2 are recovery and 2 are speed, so you can drop one each of those. That’s what I’m going to do on tight weeks - like the one coming up. 😀

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to cheekychipmunks

Ahh OK. I see ComfortNotSpeed is following the same plan but without one of the recovery runs. One thing that would annoy me is that my phone and my watch are very different when it comes to GPS ... NRC always finishes ahead of my watch.Maybe I'll take another look though.

Beatlesforever profile image
Beatlesforever in reply to linda9389

I'm on the NRC plan also doing 3 runs most weeks so I drop the shortest recovery and one of the speed runs. Mean Mr Garmin also keeps me running for longer than the NRC app on distance based runs but I'm used to it by now 🤣 I'm finding their guided runs really motivating for speed runs, I never knew I could have fun doing intervals or hill repeats! 👍

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Beatlesforever

I've just finished watching the video! I have 16 weeks to go to race day, and it set me off on week 14. Not sure if it would add weeks or just have me ready early 😀 I may try it next week and see. I do like the NRC guided runs, and as you say I can just run on til Garmin beeps! As you say, being told to run intervals 'live' is much better than trying to persuade yourself to do them.

I love the idea of a virtual HM, I don’t feel experienced enough yet to actually enter anything, and I need to get quite a few more miles under my belt yet - so far I’ve done 2 x 10 miles, and am looking to consolidate this for a while, then add 10% once every one or two weeks, with shorter, faster runs in between. 😊😊😊

I'm signed up for the Cardiff Half Marathon on 3rd Oct. I did join you virtually for the last 2 HUHM but this will be my first real race - so super excited about it and also a little nervous! Unfortunately, been on IC since May 31st with bad ankle - really hoping it heals soon 🤞Normally I just run as and when I can fit it in with work and family, but having this injury has made this think I really should follow a plan. A while ago I signed up for the GNR via a charity sponsor. Since then my running has been pants! Niggle after niggle. So 12 September is a challenge! I managed to get three runs in last week; all road runs on our favourite Isles of Scilly. By taking things dead slow I managed 5, 6 and then 7k and touch wood, everything feels fine. We have walked 114k since we came and I have added in daily exercises too! I have set myself a target of getting to my first 10k since mid April by the end of the week. If I can manage that, I may have a chance of being ready for September. If I can't, maybe it is time to contact the sponsor and let them allocate the space to someone else.

linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Beachcomber66

Oh, I feel your pain! I've just cancelled two events and am feeling so relieved to have some breathing space. These constant niggles are awful! But that sounds like progress indeed. You just have to remain cautious now and not go wild! Hopefully you'll be hanging on to that GNR place!

I need a quick “make or break” . It would be wrong to drag things out and cancel at the last minute. I say quick…… I am keeping well below 7min/k pace, so am giving things a fair chance. I see that you have been suffering too.

I hope that mine isn’t age catching up! I will check in with the physio next week.

I know that I will find running on trails tougher so my aim will be completion not worrying about the time. There are 5k 10k HM M and UM all on the same day so hopefully plenty of people around to keep me going and a lovely day out if the weather's good..

That sounds great! A trail HM is very different to a road HM, so looks like you'll be on for another PB!!!

Hi Linda! Nothing long planned for the autumn as yet apart from the Great South Run on 17th October. Does that count? Would love to do a Virtual one again with HU though 👍Meanwhile Katnap and I are hoping to do our first real HM on 18th July, the Compton Verney HM. I’ve thought of deferring several times as it’s quite hilly but looks like I’ll be doing it as long as happens! 😱

Yay! Great, I was hoping there would be a group to join 😀It will be my very first HM!! I have decided upon the Bournemouth HM October 10th (post to follow to explain why).

I have adapted Roseabi's plan, taking into account days I can run (until the end of term) and holidays away. Week 1 done - I managed 3 runs, some stretch/strength days too - so good start.

Hubby is busy searching to find a 'reasonably' priced hotel for the Saturday night - which is proving very difficult!

Very excited!!

Especially on a race weekend!!

Hi Linda I was booked in for the Brighton HM which was postponed a week and a half prior to the event until October 10th! I was just starting my taper week and this would have been my first HM. I was at the stage of being nervous and excited at the same time. I'm not too down hearted and will just maintain until the time comes to ramp up again. So my question is what should I do, I'm planning on 3 runs per week of 4,5, miles then long runs of 6,8,10 when should I start increasing beyond 10? I want to maintain the distance. Thanks all in advance for any suggestions 🙂

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to

That must've been so disappointing. But at least you know you were race ready once and you can do it again! Did you have a plan? Why not follow a similar path to what you did to prepare first time around. Some plans only take you to 10 miles in training anyway. You could maybe do a cycle of long runs as 6, 8, 10, 6, 8, 9, 10, 8*10, 11, 12, 8, 10, 6, race. That way you only hit the longer distances once, and you build in a cut back week every 4 weeks. If that load is too much, you could make the alternate runs shorter so you go in slightly largerjumps but over two weeks (rather than running long every week). Lots of time and flexibility but listen to your body, have one cut back week in 4 and only do a long run every two weeks if you feel you need to cut back further. However you approach it, good luck. It will be all the better for waiting for it!

in reply to linda9389

Hi Linda thanks for the reply and helpful advice, I followed a plan similar to the runners world beginners HM this worked fine for me, the plan took me to 11 miles. I like the cut back weeks and find they really work for me even though it feels strange to reduce the mileage I definitely feel the benefit the week after. Thanks again and hopefully October 10th goes ahead 😀

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to

Fingers crossed! If the plan worked once, then you could simply count the weeks and start it again at the relevant point.

Hiya linda9389 👋I'd love to join the HU HM Posse please 🏃‍♀️

I'm training for my first!

Not following any specific plan, but I've managed the 10 Miles twice now as my furthest distance to date 😃

I've been upping my distance by the 10% rule and my monthly Ks are adding up...

I ran 104 K this month 🏃‍♀️

I've got a 10K race on the 18th of this month so I don't want to up my distance too much before hand and risk overdoing things..

But after that I plan to do another one or two 10miles then up to 18K

All being well I hope to make my half marathon by my 55th birthday on the 18th of August 🙏

Be great to follow everyone's journey and take on all the useful info all you wonderful people have to offer 🙌

Thanks x

Hi I’m doing the NRC half marathon plan, it’s my first try at this distance since completing C25K in February 2021. Enjoying the plan so far, I’m currently on 9 weeks to go with a run date of Sunday 12 September 2021.

I have no actual race, but would be very interested in joining the HU HM group.

Feeling positive about the plan with my first 12.5k on Friday (longest distance so far). Reading up about hydration and enjoying drinking coconut water 🥰

What do others do for hydration? Carrying fluids (vest, bottles other)

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to NanaPlum

Brilliant, I'll add you to the list. I'm trying that plan this time too. I tend to ise bittles for shorter runs but have a hydration vest with a bladder for longer ones. It will depend how much you find you like to drink as to whether you need a bladder or not. It's very personal.

Currently working my way through the last couple of weeks of C25K while doing the non running suggestions that are on my Garmin plan, then I’ll pick up with week 4 of the Garmin plan.

Hi this is my first time posting and I am signed up for my first HM - the New Forest HM on September 26th. I'm feeling both excited and nervous! My longest run so far has been 18k, but I'm now following a training schedule to build up the confidence, so today's run was 7k. I went out super early to avoid the heat this morning. I’m happy to say I’ve just finished 11 weeks to go on the NRC HM training plan 😊. It’s taken me 3 weeks dues to work, life and heat but I did the last 40 min recovery run this morning. 10 weeks to go actually looks less with all speed and recovery runs being 30 mins and another 10k. I can do that! I’m on holiday next week. A hot tub awaits 😊 but I’ll find somewhere to run and get a couple of the 30 min runs done - I think 🤔.It’s a journey to my 10 mile goal and at least I’m going in the right direction. It’s a year since I ran my first 5k so I think I’m doing ok, especially with my crazy job and busy life 👍🏻

You're doing brilliantly, never mind OK!!! Very often a plan will have have cut back weeks to give your body a chance to recover and consolidate - sounds like '10 weeks to go' may just be a cutback week. Running tourism is a wonderful thing - enjoy those holiday runs!

I'm struggling a bit with my training...I wanted to run the whole distance, but I'm finding hard to run more than a couple of KM without needing a walk break at the moment. What's that all about then? I think it's possibly the training plan, a Garmin Coach one with Amy, it's just relentless...I checked on the facebook page with people who've done it already, and yes, the long runs just keep on... and on...the race is 10 weeks away, yesterday's run was meant to be 17.7 KM seems very early to me for that distance..there are no "rest" weeks either, so this week I'm scheduling in my own. I did 12 ish K yesterday on run/walk, and will scale down the other runs this week too.

I considered pulling out completely, but now I'm thinking I might need to Galloway it again...

Curlygurly2 profile image

Yes, apparently all the long runs are at least 16K from now on, with 2 of them taking me to 22.5 K before race day. I like that idea, to do a bit more than the distance, but not silly long runs every week...not sure what I'll do from now on, certainly not those distances.

A mix of virtual and real races for me but at least the running world is slowly coming back to normal. I'm currently holidaying in Scotland and have no choice but to run hilly routes but I guess it's all good strength training for my legs! Good luck everyone in their training.
