First Half Marathon

I haven’t posted my training for today as I’ve not got myself sorted but I’ve been reading all your tips and advice. Anyway today was the day and as I really don’t like the sunshine and it was a virtual one I decided to set off at 5am. I was excited and determined to enjoy it. And enjoy it I did even though at about mile 10 I had to stop and stretch my back and by the time I got home I was walking because my knee was complaining badly as was my back. But I did it. Not sure it’s a distance I would do again but as I wanted to have run a half marathon before I was 70 next year I’m glad I did it.

Very well done! The first time you attempt that distance is always hard physically and mentally, especially the last few miles. I attempted my first half at 63 yrs old. No problem with sunshine - the heavens opened and it rained all the way - soaked to the knickers 😱Congratulations on a great achievement. Feet up and relax now!

Oh wow you wouldn’t forget that one 😂. I had a similar experience a few weeks ago!

I was encouraged by a running buddy - she ran her first marathon on her 70th birthday. She ran the same half as me and came in 10 mins faster - she was 75. 😊 Never say never!

I discovered Jeffing from someone on this site. So I do all my runs now at 30/30, or 20/30. Lifesaver for sure. And quicker than continously running. jeffgalloway.com/training/r...

I Jeff too. 😊It’s certainly a life saver and I’ve learnt to adjust the interval according to my heart rate so I can keep it down. Magic.

Bravo Knittingrunner 👍

Thank you. I wasn’t totally alone. I used the guided runs on NRC and remembered all the advice on here about increasing distance slowly and steadily and created my own plan. 😊

I got to 18km in one run. The next was going to be 20km with an option to extend to HM, but circumstances were against me. I'll have another try, but not this month. I'm consolidating around 10km ahead of the Manchester NHS 10K on July 4th. (Assuming it goes ahead as planned.)

Feeling remarkably good thank you. Yes my knee is a bit swollen but I’m really pleased at how well I’ve recovered. That’s jeffing I think. 😊

Amazing, many congratulations Knittingrunner 🎉👏👏👏 and a very inspiring post! I'm hoping to build up to a HM sometime in the autumn and your post has really given me extra motivation, thank you! 😃

Knittingrunner profile image
KnittingrunnerHalf Marathon in reply to Beatlesforever

Good luck. I think I’d prefer to do it in the autumn too but of course you have to train in the summer which isn’t so good. On second thoughts I think I’d prefer a spring one. Winter is my preferred time to run. 😊

Beatlesforever profile image
Beatlesforever in reply to Knittingrunner

I'm with you, I signed up to the HUHM that fitted perfectly with winter training and spring HM but I was on the IC on and off earlier this year so I had to postpone it. At least this way I've got the motivation to keep running through summer 🥵🥵🥵

That’s true and I read somewhere that the more hot running you do the easier it gets! You can let us know. 😉

Well done you! That looks like a lovely circular route too, how nice to be by the sea 😊. What an achievement - I hope your knee and back feel better today! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Knittingrunner profile image

Thank you. It is lovely running along the sea front as long as it’s before it gets busy 🥴! Thankfully knee and back are nicely on the mend and I really want to get out tomorrow and give it a little go. 🤞🏻I will be ok. 😊🏃🏻‍♀️
