Hey everyone!!

How are you getting on with your running, cross training, resting? Tell us all about it ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

Today is "first day back at the pub day" in the UK, and we have snow, even here in Hove!! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I actually wasn't planning on going to the pub today, but I have been trying to book a swim at my local leisure centre; no luck so far, I think their internet and phones are broken.

โญUPDATE!! Booked a swim, it is tomorrow (Weds) at 6.30 am - pray for meeeeee ๐Ÿ˜‚

I've been mostly carrying on with my Garmin training plan, had a bit of a break for a 36-hour headache after my Covid jab, and then a detour for THE HUHM&10K EVENT - by the way, wasn't it fabulous????!!!!!!! ๐Ÿคฉ That half marathon kicked my butt and so does this Garmin plan, I'll be honest! I'm now up to 12 (twelve!!) 800 m intervals in the "Speed Repeats" workout!!! But I just watched the latest video from Jeff Galloway, he's so sweet! OK, Jeff, I will carry on trying, for you ๐Ÿฅฐ

Are you finding things difficult at the moment? Of course, if it was easy it wouldn't be worth doing...

As always, if you're new here, or just browsing through the community posts, this is a great place to introduce yourself and let us know how you are doing. Youโ€™ll find plenty of support and knowledge from your fellow runners here.

Have a great week, everyone!!!

A 36 hour headache sounds horrible, poor you. But 14 intervals!!! Thatโ€™s insane! Seriously well done roseabi ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ช You are a running machine ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

Well, Iโ€™m beyond excited. Forget about the pubs and shops, I have a gait analysis on Thursday and new shoes to purchase ๐Ÿฅฐ The two pairs I use are coming up to end of life and I canโ€™t find replacements online and itโ€™s always good to have a gait analysis every now and again. The last time I had one resulted in a big positive change for my running.

In other news, Iโ€™m back up to 14K after my little break in January. Itโ€™s taken a while because my back was giving me problems and I couldnโ€™t understand why. Then an email popped up from my go-to running expert balancedrunner.com

And she believes that traditional mat Pilates works against runners and can actually cause issues. Sheโ€™s created a Pilates workout especially for runners which Iโ€™ve done for a few weeks now in place of my traditional class. And my back pain has almost disappeared! Itโ€™s too early to say if this works but it makes sense for me when you look at the movements. Iโ€™m sticking to it for a while and then Iโ€™ll post here with a full report ๐Ÿ™‚

Have a good week everyone and happy running ๐Ÿฅฐ

This is very interesting. Iโ€™ve been pretty rubbish at getting on my mat recently, weโ€™ve had a lot of diy projects happening on top of work and Iโ€™ve just not had time! I used to notice my running would suffer when I let the yoga slip but not this time! Iโ€™ve so far done 24 weeks of s&c classes with a physiotherapist who is also an ultra runner and Iโ€™m wondering if the benefit of the yoga before was that planks and lunges etc were the only strength work I actually did! The physio that has done the sessions is really not into runners doing a lot of stretching, and generally advises that a lot of flexibility without the muscle strength and balance/stability to back it up is quite detrimental. A long post to say Iโ€™m also wondering if some yoga poses are actually hindering rather than helping ๐Ÿค”

Sorry to hear about the 36 hour headache roseabi

Well done for following the Garmin Plan. Iโ€™ve always thought it would be too complicated for me although I do love Jeff for my slow weekly runs. Jeff 8 miles today at an average heart rate of 132 ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

I will look out for all the media coverage of the pubs opening in the UK ๐Ÿฅด

Our "pubs" opened last week to outside terraces only. Golf is back on. Tennis, swimming etc. Week today everything reopens bars, restaurants and shop wise. Cannot wait to shop for things!!

I have just cycled upto the Bike shop and left my old bike for servicing. I dont do much cycling as I am not confident but hope to do more so thought an overhaul of the bike would be a good idea.

I dont have a training plan as such at the moment. But I am running 3 times a week and doing strength training too. Am now running with more people in the running group now we are allowed to meet etc. Our Tuesday meet is in a very hilly area so that covers my hill training. the Saturday meet is usually a longer countryside run. thursday is very local and paved and flat! Hoping this mixture will keep me in good shape for my next goal which is the London Landmarks HM 1 August. I am keeping everything crossed that I will actually be able to travel to the UK anyway - not yet had any vaccination but scheduled for April for first one. But second one - will it be in time??

๐Ÿคฅ We will see.

Wishing good training to everyone.

Hello! I am starting my HM training plan this week, now I've done 10k and survived with no nasties, and yes, wasn't the whole HUHM/10K event a whole lot of fun and so motivating! Steering clear of the pub, for now, as wonderful as it is for things to reopen, I am a fair weather pub frequenter at the best of times, so I will wait until things warm up a bit. Queues round the block for the three barbers this morning. OH and dearest teenage son may just have to hang on a bit longer if they don't want to get cold waiting! Lovely to see more people out though, shops doors open and windows lit up etc.

Keep warm everyone, Spring just around the corner....

Hello lovely VRBs!

To those of you getting more relaxed lockdown restrictions and Covid jabs, that's great news, enjoy making the most of it all. We're still locked down here, though this time I can run within a 10k radius of home without a time limit, unlike previous lockdowns. Something to be grateful for.

Also super grateful for the HUHM and HU 10k events, which I absolutely loved. I'm utterly delighted to report that my fundraising is currently at ยฃ668, before Gift Aid is added on.

As always, I'm in awe of roseabi - fourteen 800m intervals?! - and similarly disciplined souls who plan and train properly. I'm still doing my own thing, which is essentially going out of the door and seeing what happens. Mostly this means I end up in the forest - not difficult, I live right next to it - sometimes via the road, and now increasingly via the paths and tracks.

Yesterday's outing turned into an obsession with heading up and down hills, plus a bit of exploring the start of tracks that might just lead somewhere another day. Result: a 2 hour 16.64k run with 490m elevation gain. And I didn't see a soul while I was out ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ+โ›ฐ๏ธโ›ฐ๏ธโ›ฐ๏ธ=๐Ÿ˜

Happy running, everybody, whatever that means to you!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Cmoi

Well, I made a mistake it was only 12 intervals, for some reason I keep thinking there's 14 - maybe there will be next week ๐Ÿ˜จ It started off with just 6, then there were 8, then 10, then 12, and there's still plenty of this training plan left!!!

Sorry to go on about lockdown easing, I hope things get better for you soon!

At least, that sounds like a completely fabulous run and well done for all the elevation - I'm deeply envious of your forest xxx

I'm not really a pub "regular". We'll go in one for a shandy on a hot day when we're on an excursion, or maybe an impromptu meal when we've been out and it would be late when we'd be getting back home.

Shops opening won't make much difference to us. Herself has booked a haircut and grey removal session.

And the gym can wait for now. It would be nice to have a swim, but I'm not confident about that sort of thing just yet.

Besides, the great outdoors continues to provide enough of challenges for the moment.

I'm looking forward to doing my first parkrun in a couple of months' time, and then the Manchester 10k in early July. In the meantime, I'm currently inching towards a HM.

A 36 hour headache sounds miserable roseabi - but 12 x 800m intervals sounds even worse! But you survived both, so youโ€™re a superstar! โญ๏ธ

I havenโ€™t run much distance this past week, but Iโ€™ve done several varied 5ks. One was a JogRunSprint session which I loved (after), one was (not) PR, and Iโ€™ve also taken to running a very gnarly and hilly 5k trail circuit out the back of my house. Lots of fun and Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s all good for me! ๐Ÿฅต

Iโ€™m also doing 2 or 3 HIIT workouts outside with my daughters (one of whom is pregnant again so needs to modify a bit). Itโ€™s a subscription channel on YouTube called Body by Ciara. I like her, sheโ€™s only in her 20โ€™s, but sheโ€™s funny and even though she works us hard, she isnโ€™t a total drill sergeant and has a good laugh at how hard it is! And of course, Iโ€™m still a regular on the mat with my old pal, Adriene. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Iโ€™ve only Jeffed once, but I feel I should befriend him if I can only get over the fact that I deem runs need to be runs, no walking allowed! ๐Ÿ™„ So many people swear by him ..... should I welcome him into my life too? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to cheekychipmunks

I did! I have another 12-interval session this week, I think perhaps Jeff is trying to kill me? ๐Ÿ˜‚ I am not actually doing run-walk-run intervals, they are optional - although naturally Jeff keeps going on about them ๐Ÿ˜Š

Ciara sounds good! xxx

Walk the steep bits. It makes sense ! I cottoned on to that in my first very steep-from-the-off road race where walkers were overtaking me as I attempted to run. Wears you out to no avail ๐Ÿ˜ค. You catch up on the inevitable downhill ๐Ÿ™‚

I properly Jeffed my first marathon. It was a good decision It seems a bit odd to walk from very early on but I stuck with it and it worked.

Oh my, 36 hrs is a long time to have a headache, but at least you got the shot - hope you are feeling fully good now. We just got our appointments setup this weekend. My first shot is in a couple of weeks. 12 speed repeat intervals is amazing!

Iโ€™ve been upping my hills and my mileage slowly. Last week I got 12 hill repeats done - kind of a tough hill so Iโ€™m happy with that - one more than the previous week. And Sat was a slow 30k beach run - felt pretty good and not smashed. Legs felt tired and heavy today tho on the short run so I cut it back a bit. Happy running everyone ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Iโ€™m a bit pants at working things out numbers/timings wise but I did the Jeff thing for my first marathon. I wrote it down, got it clear in my head, so I could follow it from memory on the actual day. It was basically run for 2.5k then walk to 3km then run again etc. It seems strange to walk early but Jeff knows his onions so I did it. I was good by the end, and walked away in good nick, to the pub I was good afterwards in the days that followed. Thatโ€™s the idea, so I was pleased to do it. I Jeffed for the second marathon but less rigidly.

After the Spring HM and 10k Iโ€™m back to 5k and 7k and now running 16.1k for the next 4 Fridays to improve strength and stamina past 14k! Also doing daily yoga sessions since January which I think are helping for flexibility, upper body strengths breathing and general level of fitness and relaxation. Like Cmoi I just go out and run usually to music and just take the runs as they come. Iโ€™m 80 miles from completing LEJOG04 hopefully in May and hopefully at Jโ€™OG!! My GC plan has been a bit of the shock to the system too, I've done two weeks of it so far, and have already been subjected to - a benchmark run, strides, speed intervals, goal pace in intervals, long runs, short runs...all this for someone who normally just plods along at a pace they think will get them to whatever distance they have planned for that session...

I'm enjoying it though, with some trepidation! I wonder what he's got up his sleeve for the next weeks...

Hopefully jab number two will be less problematic ๐ŸคžI'd like a hug and a pep talk from Jeff please, but today all I got was a snide 'unproductive' from Mr Garmin ! I know he doesn't know what he's talking about half the time, but he's been so nice to me lately I'd been lulled into a false sense of security ๐ŸคฌI'm approaching anything over 10k as a run/walk at the moment. I decided (in a totally unscientific manner) on 1.4k run, 0.1k walk ( long enough to either blow my nose, take a drink or grab a chew - not all three, not even two out of three, unless I slow right down ...). I have to say I quite like it. There is something to look forward to all the time and it breaks the run up. I'm getting better at finding the info I need from my watch as well, setting up lap audio alerts means I don't miss the end of an interval anymore (not accidentally at least, I might sometimes intentionally miss the start of a new run segment for a short while ...).

I've entered a real HM on 2nd May so have a focus for the next few weeks so long as it doesn't cancel. That's as exciting as the pub gardens being open in April as far as I'm concerned. But hopefully it's all progress in the right direction ๐Ÿฅฐ

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to linda9389

Thank you!

It's very deflating to see that 'unproductive' isn't it! I am back to 'maintaining' after a spell of 'unproductive', which doesn't really feel a lot better!

I have been having some trouble hearing my watch alerts recently, a combination of traffic, wind, the cold weather necessitating a woolly hat... I end up holding my left hand up near my ear ๐Ÿ˜‚

MUCH more exciting!!! I think I may set up a new 'Events' pinned post, or is that too optimistic?

Oh Iโ€™ve missed Jeff ! I was halfway into a 21 week HM Garmin plan with Jeff and had to pause it for injury in February and managed to work back up to 10k for the HU spring run and the past couple of weeks have managed two more 10ks and an 11k last week and a 12k jeffing today (60:30). I saw this post and thought maybe itโ€™s time to restart the paused plan (I had got up to 10miles) and itโ€™s been wiped !! You are supposed to be able to pause and restart but they must have thought Iโ€™d paused it for too long ! So now faced with a dilemma. I might try a difference coach because frankly I started to get bored of the same mid week runs (stride repeats and the biweekly magic half mile). I think I might start alternating jeffing and non stop running. I need something to get me back to 3x a week because Iโ€™ve slipped a bit back to only 2x per week. Will also check out that yoga for runners. Iโ€™ve got a bit bored of my usual yoga teacher too ! Oh dear - how fickle I am !!!
