My first proper bonk

Yesterday I experienced my first proper bonk. No, not THAT one πŸ˜‚

β€œThe symptoms of a bonk can vary, but on a physical side you will generally feel extremely weak and tired and you may shake, sweat a lot and feel dizzy or light-headed. You may also have heart palpitations and will probably be very hungry.”

Basically I came to a complete standstill and couldn’t even walk. There was nothing left at all and it felt really weird. Fuzzy light head and wobbly sore legs.

Looking back I was totally to blame. A combination of things including hot weather, poor hydration and fuelling in the previous 24hours, a hot day, as well as a poor night’s sleep that together meant the writing was in the wall. As Linda said on Strava it was crazy to run in that weather but I was dying to try out my new shoes πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜‚.

Lots of lessons learned here. 😬

Cyclists Bonk. Runners Hit The Wall.

I blame triathletes for this cross-pollination of terminology. Even amongst cyclists I think 'Bonk' must have come from across the pond. I can't imagine French or Yorkshire folk used it.

Some suggested etymology here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitti...

American marathoners and other endurance athletes routinely use the expression "bonk", but it's too confusing to use it in the UK 😊😊😊

Hey my man, I call it an 'attack of the fuzzies.' Glad you're all ok and the most important thing now is get back out there next time. We are always learning!

Like that name GTFC πŸ˜‚. I’ll take a break and give it another go when the weather cools. I knew I had to do another 10km this week I should have just left it. Aye, learning all the time.

Attack of the fuzzies... I like that

Ahh yes, the lure of the shoes ... now it's making more sense!!! I have only once felt like that; I was walking back to the car and had to stop and sit down as I was convinced I was going to faint. It's never happened again but it was hot and I guess I hadn't drunk enough or eaten enough.

I'm from up North - bonk means all sorts of things up there!

I never knew it was called that Brian - just the β€œother one”! 🀣🀣

It was seriously warm this morning wasn’t it? I did my 10 miler and was pleased with my time, but I couldn’t have run another step today. πŸ₯΅

Hope you’re feeling better by now. πŸ€žπŸ˜€

Hi cheeky 😊 yes it was too warm by half πŸ˜‚. I’m still not 100% tbh. Massive congratulations on your 10 miler, a distance I have done just twice. 😬

I recall UpTheStanley hitting the wall last year Brian. It had never happened to him before and he was in complete shock. He then started using tailwind on those long runs And it hasn’t happened since.

I hope your new shoes were a success.

Yes Dexy it’s a really weird feeling especially as neither the pace nor the distance were beyond where I’d normally expect to run. I think, on reflection, I must still be feeling the after effects of my tough 10miler the previous Sunday.

The shoes felt just awesome for the first 1km and then I forgot about them. I’m not convinced yet. πŸ€” Jury is still out.

I think it only happens once! As it’s so awful we make sure it doesn’t happen again πŸ˜ƒ.

It’s a rite of passage in this running lark πŸ™‚

Yes misswobble, I really don’t want to face that again 😬. It might happen in a race but never in training or ordinary everyday jogging as I know what to look out for.

I hope misswobble is right too...had a similar episode myself a few weeks back, felt really poorly afterwards and it took days to feel right! Hope you're feeling much better now πŸ‘

Not half as much fun as the other kind of bonk! πŸ˜³πŸ˜‚
