Alternative to Strava route planner?

Just wondered what you guys use to plan routes..? Or do you just head out and see what happens? I'm not very good at judging distances at all and also have no sense of direction, so I do like to have my longer runs planned--even just in a vague way. It helps to keep me roughly on target, especially when I'm up in the hills or on a coastal adventure otherwise there's a chance I'll end up doing a 50miler via Berwick by mistake.

I was a fan of Strava's planner, but they've lumped that in with the premium membership now (😑) so I have got the hump with them.

Looks like MapMyRun still allow route planning, but are there any alternative recommendations out there? I can download things to my watch, but I prefer to have a nice map I can zoom into on my phone.

Decker told me recently about OnTheGo, which is pretty good, in fact it seems to work much better than Strava's route drawing did before they privatised it πŸ˜„ You can save your route as a link, and download as a GPX file. I believe routes can also be drawn in Google Maps, but the last time I tried it I couldn't get it to work πŸ™„

Thank you! I'll give On The Go a go πŸ˜„

I also use onthegomap, it's really simple and I find it very accurate (if they show there is a path you can go through, the path is usually there)

Thank you! I've been looking for something like this. It's exactly what I need. #gamechanger

I have used RunGo on the past, but now use Komoot. Both are free (although I paid a one off 19.99 for Komoot premium as I like it so much and use it all over the country and used it in Canada too). Both let you plan routes ( with typical idiosyncrasies that take some getting used to) but for me the best thing is that you can plan a route, then follow it with SatNav type voice navigation. I absolutely hate having to stop to check a map!!! Both have a map showing where you've been, where you are and where you're going. Komoot can be used for running, riding and hiking and chooses routes accordingly. Komoot will also yrybto get you back to your route in a sensiblebway if you go wrong. It's invaluable for my longer rides if I want to explore.

Oo I've not heard of that one. I'll take a look at that too! I don't mind paying a sensible subscription, but I think six quid a month is too much for strava as I will use so few of the premium elements.

Premium Komoot is supposed to be Β£40 but they start offering it for Β£20 on a daily basis about 7 days in πŸ˜…Basically the paid version gives you offline maps in all areas which is handy if you travel in remote places and often stray from your route and need help!!! I've used it about 12 months now and don't begrudge a bean of that one off payment 😊

Does sound good! Hmm...

Don't get me wrong, the planner and the instructions sometimes drive me mad, but overall it is brilliant for me because I literally loathe stopping to check maps. On a 50k plus cycle ride there is no way I can memorise the route. For cycling I use Komoot together with dwmap (free version) on my watch, which gives me a route outline on my wrist. The voice and that outline mean I get it right 95% of the time ... when I actually listen (sadly I often drift off into lala land, but it soons tells me I've gone wrong πŸ˜€)

Plot a route - it’s a website not app

ViewRanger is my favourite but it's best for off road.

I use OS maps, paid for the full version, Β£24 for a year. Have great fun planning routes using the Explorer Maps.

Can print maps, download to App and follow, record and save your route, share routes with friends etc.

There is a more basic, free version, which I messed around on first before I took the plunge.

I use the garmin one and a traditional paper OS map :)

I use good run guide. I like that you can measure a route you want to follow You are represented by a little runner icon πŸ˜ƒ. You can toggle between satellite view and footpath view to help see landmarks close up. That helps when you actually get out there πŸ™‚
