These shorter runs

Hey guys bit of advice needed. Started marathon plan. The shorter runs are they used to do interval running etc or is it basically just getting miles under the belt.

The plan I'm using is off the Edinburgh marathon website. It seems to give me 3 runs in a row the rest, cross train then a. Long run. The 3 in a run are usually small enough.

It's not a very informative training plan is it!? 😄

It does look as though it's just building up the mileage on your legs. It says something at the top about tweaking the weekly runs to suit your schedule, and I suggest you move the runs around if it helps you fit them in, or if you'd like a break between runs. You could include intervals or other speed work if you like, but they are correct that it's not really necessary for a first marathon, where you are really just aiming to finish.

If you end up finding it boring though, you're strong and I don't see any harm in you having a look at the tempo, pace, intervals, hill repeats that they have in the advanced plan!

Have fun 😊😊😊

Be careful. A marathon training plan ruined my legs. Next time I’ll just build up the long run every other weekend with a drop back every so often. There was nowhere near enough rest time for me. It’s a very steep learning curve.

I have a book which basically says you can do a marathon on theee runs a week plus cross training on the other days

I did a mara plan too but I changed it quite a bit to suit my setup with one of the short runs being speedwork or hills. The other short runs were just regular pace and then a long run on the weekend. It seemed to work ok but hydration and nutrition planning could have gone better towards the end. I did not lock it in until the week prior to the race. If I could have given myself some time to play with nutrition beyond 30k that would have helped. Good luck whatever you decide!

My shorter runs during marathon training are mostly about building mileage. I use parkrun for speedwork. Not that you could tell!

Good idea but I've never done a park run as I usually work Saturdays 😔

Thanks. I wasn't overly fussed on the plan. Still going to try and do it but think I'll switch to 'JOHNNY'S NO PRESSURE PLAN' lol. I'll mix the short runs up and use the long run for my actual pace and getting the miles under leg. I'm only doing this to prove to myself I can do it. So no real rush 😜
