2 mile easy run but knee still not happy...

So after having a week off from running and just focusing on building my strength instead I went for an easy 'test run' to see how my knee was doing and whether I could resume training as normal. The first mile was fine but then I felt that familiar pain I felt last Sunday so I decided to walk the last little bit of my run, especially because running downhill really aggravates my knee at the moment. So now my knee is back to where it was last Sunday...a bit fed up to say the least. I've decided to give myself another week off and it may turn into two. I definitely think I need to see a physio (my ankles haven't been feeling right for the past three weeks either) but what's very frustrating is that I can't because of the present circumstances! So not in the best of moods if I'm honest, I just want to get back into running but my knee is not letting me! :-(

Oh no RC! Really sorry to read this. You’ve done the right thing in stopping and taking more rest. I’m not an expert obviously but the knee pain sounds as if it might be linked to the ankle problem doesn’t it? Could you arrange for a telephone physio appointment? I know my local physio is offering this atm so might be worth a look?

Thanks, yeah I won't be surprised if those two are linked to be honest. I have contacted my local physio and they have said that they can't give me a consultation over skype or over the phone because they said that the physio won't be able to do a proper diagnosis and might end up giving me wrong/inaccurate information. So I'm basically stuck...

Sorry about your knee Redcello41, now that is becoming a serious problem because of this lockdown, nothing is open except food shops, if anything goes wrong you can't get it repaired or replaced and as you say physios are all off.

Give yourself at least a weeks break from running and see how it goes next week.

Thanks, yeah I am going to give myself at least 2-3 weeks off and only do low impact exercise like Pilates and focus on my upper body strength too. :-)

Ahh, that's so disappointing for you. I had knee pain in my very first attempt at C25K and actually had 6 weeks off (4 may have been OK, but probably not less). In the meantime I worked on glute strengthening and quad strengthening exercises that the physio gave me. A week really isn't very long for an injury to heal. Don't be too despondent, channel that energy into some research and get a regular routine of glute, core and quad strengthening exercises which don't load your knee or cause any pain. Focusing on strength exercises will enable you to come back better than ever. Big hugs though, as you say this is a time when a run is doubly beneficial - I'm sure you'll be back running before we're back to normal. Take care.

Yeah very disappointing especially when running is keeping me sane during present circumstances! Going to give myself this week completely off and then focus on upper body strength and stuff like Pilates. I'm also going to make sure that I will not do any knee-loading exercises! :-)

My knees have been bad for about 4 weeks now, i had xray done on one but havent got the results yet, so i know how you feel. I have run a couple of times but it doesnt feel right, i cycle more at the minute instead and go on walks.

You might benefit from a coupleof weeks rest, but maybe you should do daily stretches for your legs.

Sorry to hear that you've been having knee issues too, it is incredibly frustrating isn't it? I don't have a bike unfortunately, so I am going to give myself 2-3 weeks off and then do some Pilates next week I think. :-)

It is frustrating, i did manage to run 30 minutes on Monday though so maybe ill be sorted soon.

The cycling is enjoyable though, i am doing lots of resistance training to so i think ill be fine.

Are you doing anything to help your knees besides rest them?

It's good that you managed a 30 minute run but don't push yourself too much, you don't want to re-injure yourself again.

I am icing my knee everyday and going to do some Pilates too.

I will only run once per week for now, the lump is still there so i need to be careful.

I you can buy a balance board from somewhere they are very good for strengthening the knees. The Range does them for less than £10.

Oh RC, that’s such a shame. I’m not surprised you feel cheesed off. As everyone has already said, rest up a bit longer - as long as you can - and maybe get a telephone physio consultation and get some exercises.

Just what you don’t need during this already trying time. ☹️

So sorry to hear this redcello. I know how you feel as I am on the IC for 6-8 weeks with a knee injury. But it is important that you get some expert advice as you don’t want to make matters worse. The knees are so important for running. Physios aren’t allowed to do face to face consultations at the moment but you will find that many are offering telephone or FaceTime advice.

Thank you redcello,. Yes I was fortunate that I had a medical report from a specialist in the US, so the physio could work from that. Perhaps it’s best to just give the leg a rest from running for a while in case you cause more damage.

Ah that makes sense now. Yes I think that is a very wise idea :-)

Bad luck, do you have access to any exercise machines? Rowers, Bikes or Elliptical trainers, they take out the impact on the body while moving the joints in different ways that can still give a good cardio workout and you can just stop or slow way down depending on how you feel. I use them a lot and they have been great for my recovery programme.

Thanks! I haven't got any access to those things unfortunately, and don't have a bike either :-( I really wish that I did because I don't want to lose the fitness I have already build up!
