Shouldn’t have bothered ...... 🙄

Well contrary to my usual upbeat posts about PR, this one is not going to be one of them, dear VRBs. 😅 It was my worst one yet!

I really should not have bothered. My legs were feeling like limp lengths of rope, I have the very beginnings of a cold and I’m cream crackered after a busy week of all sorts.

Still, in true “nothing will stop me from doing PR” fashion, I found myself and Flossie driving into town. All the while I was thinking .... why? I looked at the clock and saw it was 8:18. One hour from then I knew I’d be regretting my decision.

And yes I was! It was windy - a cold wind - but I was still in just my 50 PR top. I felt warm, but not very, which is unlike me. My rope legs were less effective than rope, and I was practically crawling up the hills. But stubborn daft little me wouldn’t allow myself to walk. Why not?? It would have given me a quicker time, I know. 🤦‍♀️ Flossie was literally walking next to me. The shame. Come on Flo, I thought, at least trot along! 🐾🐾🐾

So I finished (my different Garmin recorded 4.75k, as oh the faffage at the beginning, I’m not even GOING there). The 4.75k time was slower than the usual 5k, not even counting the starting at the back with dog position. Not good.

I went into Tesco to get some shopping and immediately felt really hot. I’m clearly coming down with something, and I need to know when not to bother running!

So the moral of this tale is ..... if every bone in your body is saying stay in bed, maybe listen! I’m not talking gremlins, those can take a running jump. I know a gremlin when one comes knocking. I’ll step back a bit next week and be nice to myself. 💕

Hope all your PRs/runs were more successful! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Take care and get better soon. Another fan of First Defence here - had never used it before my impending HMs last year 🤣

It’s great isn’t it Linda? Someone on here recommended it in a post last winter. I tried it, and I swear it’s nipped several colds in the bud. 🤞 it works this time too. 🙂🤧🤞

Sometimes, very rarely, bowing to the inevitable is the best course. Sounds as though that is where you are CC. You will soon fight it off.💪

Very true BC. But PR is so ingrained on Saturday mornings, I immediately swept away the fleeting thought I had about not going. That’ll teach me! 🤦‍♀️🙄😅

I really feel for you today! I ran over 10miles in total yesterday afternoon and evening. It was a real challenge to just not stop at today's PR.

Well done for toughing it out!

Somehow kept enough in the tank for the final segment Final Sprint Across The Grass in a 'bronze' time.

Well done to you too Katnap! You’re clearly made of super tough stuff. 💪 I tried a few times in vane to make my legs go a bit faster, but they were having none of it. Even downhill they felt sluggish.

It’s being chalked off as a bad ‘un I’m afraid! 🙃

Thanks Flick, I’m not too bothered about the run - I’m just cross with myself for being a plonker and going in the first place! I’m not accustomed to lounging at home on a Saturday morning! Lesson learned. ❤️

in reply to cheekychipmunks

Probably no harm done, and you managed to run despite the obstacles, so you certainly have determination and staying power 😂❤️

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply to

Which is clearly my downfall! Staying at home would have been best, or failing that, giving myself permission to walk (😳) or even bail (😱) 🤣

If it makes you feel better Munks, I had a bad run this morning too. Had no energy and every step was hard and that ruddy wind kept holding me back 💨😫

Anyway you got out and it’s still a few miles in your running bank so it’s all good.

Let’s hope you’re not coming down with something but if you are then at least it’s now and not a few days before Bath!

Have a bit of TLC and a nice relaxing few days x

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply to Irishprincess

Oh no, shame you had a tough time too IP. 👎 Yes, that wind was brutal and such a chilly one today wasn’t it? 💨 💨

I can’t even imagine how livid I’d be if I had a lurgy just prior to, or during Bath. So you’re right, having it now - if it insists on developing - is by far the best option. 👍

I’ll take it super easy for few days now. 👍😀

Oh no cheeky I have liked your post to support you but it’s the first post I’ve seen from you where you are clearly not happy or well. I was in bed for 3 days last week with what I thought was just a cold but it really knocked me out. So now is the time to dose up on beechams etc, wrap up warm indoors with a box (or 2) of tissues and look after yourself. Forget about the running and treat it as your re-charge week. Snuggle up in bed for a lie-in tomorrow, and don’t worry , this will pass. We’ll soon see you acting like a Duracell bunny again. 🐇🐿

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply to Dexy5

Thanks lovely Dexy, that’s really kind. I’m sorry you haven’t been well either. 👎👎 At least we’ll be fighting fit ready to tackle QE Park in a couple of weeks ...... it would have been hard for both of us today it seems!

Yes, it did feel odd not to be enthusing about PR like I normally do, but there was zero to enthuse about. I’ll be treating myself to a lie in tomorrow and lots of potions. Unfortunately we’re out for dinner this evening, otherwise I’d be in bed at around 6pm!

Look after yourself too. 👍😀

Oh no cheeky I’m so sorry you had a horrible time of it today. Saying that, there is good advice in there. I haven’t fallen sick since I started parkrun but I know it’s inevitable. If that did happen, I think I would offer to do a volunteer role and forfeit the parkrun. Hindsight is a great thing. I hope you feel better soon xx

Will you be following YWA February?

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply to JaoJao

Aww thanks JaoJao. I’ve only missed PR due to illness once since my first one in September 2018, so I’ve been very fortunate too.

The wind was sooo cold today💨, I’m not sure it would have done me much good volunteering either. I’m going to do it next weekend regardless. My monthly payback to Parkrun, barcode scanning. 👍😀

JaoJao profile image

I’ve yet to volunteer for barcode scanning 👍 Well done you ❤️

cheekychipmunks profile image

Get better soon Cheeky and Dexy5, great advice to you Cheeky from Dexy5, just shows how many have the parkrun habit on a Saturday morning and if they don't go it's seems very strange.

Thanks Al. Good advice indeed from Dexy. I’ll be doing next to nothing tomorrow, and won’t plan on running until Wednesday. It‘ll be hard missing Monday, but I fully intend on doing so. 😇

AlMorr profile image

Just shows how some people miss others at parkruns, I gave myself a short winter break during January from running any parkruns although I have continued to run near to where I live.

This morning I went to watch the runners at my "home" parkrun which is at Dunfermline, although 26 miles away is door to door so to speak by bus, (I have ran ten there) I was speaking to the race director, she was very pleased to see me and was happy that next week I will be running again, a few other runners recognised me when I cheered them on and as they passed I shouted "I'll be running with you next week".

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply to AlMorr

That’s lovely Al. I bet it made you feel great.😀 I do a fair amount of tourism, both local and further afield, so I only run at Eastville occasionally, but I’m always recognised by the regulars. I should mention, it’s my dog who always gets recognised first! 🐕

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrHalf Marathon in reply to cheekychipmunks

I would love to take my neighbours dog Holly to Dunfermline parkrun, my neighbour comes from a village only about 4 miles from Dunfermline, every time I take Holly a walk around the park only 3 minutes walk where I live we always have a short run during part of it.

The reason I take Holly a walk (you can see a photo of Holly and my cat Eeshan on my Profile) is my neighbour has a heart condition which was made worse by a botched up operation on Thursday which makes taking Holly a bit difficult for him.

Of course if I did take the dog to parkrun my neighbour would have to drive me there with Holly.

Thanks Aliboo! I’m realising it was the wrong decision - aching legs and body before a run is never a good sign, but being a stubborn sort, not starting, bailing or even walking wasn’t an option! 🤦‍♀️ Still, I don’t feel too bad today - still achy though - so hopefully First Defence is doing its thing. 🤞😀

That's bad luck and timing coming down with a cold/bug on a Saturday parkrun. Hope you're feeling a bit perkier & the First Defence is working. Annoyingly it didn't work this time round for me. I've just run again today after nearly 2 weeks off with a head cold & bad asthma. But at least I felt like going out. Hope you're back on your feet soon. Look after yourself. x

Thanks Slinky. I *think* I caught it in time. I’m not feeling too bad today, just a bit achy. Way better than I thought I’d feel. But I’m going to be sensible and not run until mid week just in case. 😇

Sorry you’ve been under the weather too - asthma much be such a hindrance alongside a cold. Glad you’re feeling perkier though. 😀👍
