Spring 2020 Half Marathon Group πŸ˜„ How to make the most of your race photos!

Hello fabulous people!

How is the training/planning going?

The subject of photos came up a couple of times last week, and I remembered I'd said I'd post about it a while ago, but didn't get around to it πŸ™„

I'd just like to say before starting, please don't take this subject too seriously! You shouldn't really worry about the way you look in photos - as you will see below they don't represent the whole truth by any means. Ideally we shouldn't worry about how we look at any time, but of course many of us do, and there are things we can do to make ourselves feel more confident about ourselves running - which is the most important take-home message 😊😊😊

I've re-used a pic of me at my last parkrun (going back a few months now, unfortunately!). I'm no oil painting, but there are quite a few things that went well in this pic, and some things that could be improved, so it's not bad for illustrating some of my points. Also, although I realise it's a bit early to be talking about race photos, many of you will be able to try out these suggestions at your local parkrun.

Anyway, here are my tips:

β˜… Wear something nice!

Your clothing is a good place to start on the journey to fabulous! And after all, 'tis the season to go shopping 😜 Choose clothes that fit you well, are a colour that suits you, and that just generally make you feel good. I tend to go for blue a lot, although I think it's really a bit boring! I love oranges and reds, but they tend to make me look a bit pasty 😊 But I can get away with orange socks at least! Avoid the trap of trying to hide in baggy clothes, it really doesn't work, often just makes you look bigger. I have got this part wrong with my oversized, cheapo man's vest πŸ˜„ Also think about wearing dark colours on the parts you would like to look slimmer, but add in some splashes of colour where you can, if that's what you enjoy - and a tutu and tiara will work some proper magic 😊😊😊

You can accessorise to good effect too. I like a hat for various reasons, not least because it covers up my rubbish hair and massive forehead! But if you have great hair (and if it's not too windy), let it fly!! A pair of groovy sunglasses, where appropriate, can also really give you a lift.

β˜… Check your posture!

Slumping is never a good look. Lift your chin and get your shoulders relaxed, back, and down. Straighten your back and pull in your tummy. A trick I find really helps with this is to make sure my hands come up high in front of me, almost to my chin, with my elbows lifting behind. Don't just save this one for the cameras though, it's great for your running to check your posture regularly!

One mistake runners often make at the end of a race is to get papped looking at their watch! Wait until you've passed the cameras before stopping your Garmin - looking down at your wrist will definitely give you all the chins πŸ˜„

β˜… Speed up!

When you spot that camera, pick up the pace! What you will often see in race photos is the miserable effect of GRAVITY. As we land on the ground, everything goes South, we look saggy and heavy - sometimes it may appear as though we're not even running! This is unavoidable; you will always get some photos like this - take comfort in the thought that it is a mere moment in time and not the real you!

But you can help beat gravity in photos by speeding up, and exaggerating your stride. Professional photographers may take multiple photographs as you go by, so by picking up your feet and pace you can help them catch you in mid-air! Who doesn't love a "flying feet" photo??? Plus, as your legs are leaping, your whole body is moving upwards, taking away some of that dreary sagginess.

β˜… Smile!

This is my number one tip, and another that is not just for the camera. Smiling will lift your mood, lighten your step, and also help defy gravity!!! People love to see a runner smiling, and I have had so many great reactions from people when I smile at them, it makes my day! Don't get me wrong, sometimes a game face (aka grimace) is necessary as you struggle through the difficult parts of a race, but try to smile as much as possible, and ALWAYS smile for the finish-line cameras 😊😊😊

Here's to a bit of glamour, and happy running, everyone!

Hi Roseabi, it was going well last week but I’ve been struck down with a cough and cold this week🀧😷

I’m marshalling at Parkrun on Saturday so I’ll still be involved with running a bitπŸ™‚

With any luck I’ll do Bognor Parkrun on Christmas DayπŸŽ„πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈthen pick up training from there🀞

Some great advice in there Roseabi. I will put some of these points into action next time I see a camera . At the New Forest they caught me walking and stopping my garmin - no action photos I wanted to buy. πŸ˜ƒ

I had the same at Bournemouth HM Dexy5😟 The only β€˜official’ photo I’ve seen of me with both feet off the ground was from Clermont Parkrun in Florida, which I did 3 weeks ago. I’m also smiling in it too!πŸ˜€

Keep that shot from Florida David. Hope you are better soon - UTS has been grounded too.

We will give you a wave along the coast on Christmas Day while running parkrun.

Thats's a great smile roseabi . Loving this post 😍. I can add 'moon face' to 'rubbish hair and massive forehead', and struggle with the top bit of almost every one of my photos! I might try a cap next timeπŸ€”. My last 10k race produced several flying feet shots (yay! I love them!) - no doubt, as you say, because I was running with a little extra pace to normal. I was wearing a hooded top and I notice that the extra pile of fabric makes it look like my neck was scrunched down into my shoulders (it quite possibly was by the time I pushed for the finish line, but I don't think I started out that way even though the photos make it seem as if I did πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚).

I always grin inanely when I see a photographer, but unlike your clearly smiling face in the shot above, I always manage to look slightly drunk and delirious πŸ™„- will just have to keep practising.

There is an American running sunglasses brand called Goodr, have you seen them? They are pretty pricey but they look so damn cool I am seriously tempted 😊😊😊

I'll take a look πŸ˜€ I wear glasses all the time these days, although I'm considering looking into contacts for running (though how I'd get them in on race morning with shaking hands is anybody's guess 😍).

Maddee_6333 profile image
Maddee_6333Half Marathon in reply to linda9389

Because my glasses prescription is so *expensive* it now actually costs me less to have signed up for contact lenses for occasional use (as long as I take a β€˜holiday’ for the maximum time allowed each year) because my glasses are then half price!

Oh I hate having my photo taken at the best of times but running...how do I stop sweating???! And I always look like I’m gasping for air even if I’m not. Maybe smiling more would help but I don’t know if I can hold on to a smile for 2.5 hours 🀣🀣

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to TailChaser

Keep an eye out for the cameras and save your smiles up for them 😊 Many larger events will have signs telling you that you're approaching photographers, and they may also be marked on the race map.

TailChaser profile image

Thanks for the tip roseabi, I shall look out for them and carefully run round the back of them...😁

Ha! Some great points here and what a brilliant photo Roseabi! I’ve never had a photo taken showing both feet off the ground ☹️ But I’ll keep working on it πŸ™‚

I’ve only ever bought one race photo because it showed me crossing the finish line and I was smiling which does make a huge difference, as you say. The rest were just rubbish ☹️

My challenge in races is to spot the photographers in advance so I can β€œget ready”. They usually suddenly appear at the moment when I’ve slouched a bit and look miserable and THAT”S when they snap πŸ™€

But after reading this post, my next race will have me posing like a proper model, I tell you πŸ˜ŽπŸ™„

πŸ˜„ But of course!

Oh nice photo and great post. I need to keep my eyes peeled for photographers and look up πŸ™„ I see myself heel striking often In photos. All that will change with my new elegant chi running form 🀞 my HM training is a bit delayed due to ITB and associated knee problems. I will get there slowly but surely and by listening to my body.

This post reads as if it's taken from my book of must dos. In that very particular order. I would never wear the same gear when running through south London streets and central London parks. You've got to keep certain standards. ;)

Posture is the key for a number of reasons, you are spot on, as always.

I naturally speed up whenever l want to impress an onlooker (l quickly collapse in a messy heap around the first corner).

The only thing l avoid is smiling. Smiling when struggling may look as if somebody's painted the mouth on your face with a wretched broom. I choose to remain icy cold, popped up eyes hidden behind cool shades.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to mrrun

Haha! I may have to try icy cold! Got to be better than my inane grin that usually gets captured πŸ€ͺ

mrrun profile image

There is a significant difference between 'why the hell is he grinning like that' and 'who is that cool guy'. πŸ˜‰

A frosty indifference maybe 😌

Boo Sandie1961 , there are so many colds around at the mo. Wrap up warm and stay toasty and dry, there’ll be plenty more chances to run. πŸ˜€πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ Have you tried Vicks First Defence? I swear I’ve nipped several colds in the bud this past year. (Just watch me jinx myself now! 🀧 🀧 🀧 πŸ˜…)

I couldn’t find it at first (wasn’t in the medicine cabinet!) so I didn’t quite nip it quickly enough. First one for ages though so mustn’t grumble.

Brilliant tips! My race photos usually show me red faced and hair stuck to my head

And I look as though I'm barely walking! 😬πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅

roseabi profile image

Well, a hat may help, but if you're going to have a red face it's much better to be photographed leaping through the air with it 😊😊😊

I've always gone on the basis that the only guaranteed way to look good in them is to hide behind someone in front of you every time you spot someone with a camera. That may just be me though...

Great post. I watched the London Marathon a couple of years ago. One of our sons was running in it. My hobby is photography and on the day I had a bright orange coat on and a decent camera. Most of the runners seemed to think i was some kind of official and usually responded to some words of encouragement with a smile. I got some great shots

Mind you there was a big contrast in expression from runners at 8 miles and a 20! I will do my best to smile!

I lost momentum there for a couple of

Weeks, but I’m back at it now.

My finish photos from Beachy Head 10k make me smile as I Very Obviously have my mouth clamped shut. It was so I didn’t start shouting, β€˜Go, go, go’ which is what I call to Merlin when we’re finishing. Thought it would look a bit odd to be shouting it to myself πŸ€ͺ
