A while back roseabi sent me a response saying that there was a shiny 10mile badge available "just saying" is how she put it. Since then cheekychipmunks has gone on beyond 18k, and Dexy5 and Sandie1961 and I have joined the quest for 10 miles. Today was supposed to be 14k for me. I took it really slowly and found that I still had plenty(ish!!) in the tank at 13k, so I thought "just keep running and see what happens" .
There was a brief drama when I got to 16k; I couldn't remember whether I needed to do 16.02k or 16.2k. So I did 16.25k to be on the safe side! I felt a bit like it wasn't done properly, jumping 3k isn't in the plan!! I have done two 13ks recently though. Maybe I will pay the price later. Whatever; I don't feel the elation which came with 5k and 10k, but then I am probably completely shattered. Pace? A stately 7:59/k but average heart rate of 139 was the important thing. Running for over 2 hours at 67 is no time for sprinting. Anyway, thanks to inspiring VRBs who help to keep us sane when we are struggling or IC. Some time later today I think I will be really pleased with this. For now; where is my chair!!!π

Thanks JoJo. I hit the cafe for a protein injection. A litre of zero has disappeared in record time, I am still really thirsty. A beer would be good but.....bad idea, πΊ
Claim that badge, stare at it lovingly for an eternity, then treat yourself to something delicious, be it food or drink related - or both! π
I was the same, I did 16.5k just to be safe, but that last 0.5k didnβt half crawl by! You sound fresh as a daisy! Amazing run. πππππ π
Thanks CC. I am wolfing down hi protein yoghurt laced with honeyπ. You are as bad as Tasha....only a Park Run further to go! Give a guy a breakπ.
It was just one of those things, it felt right so I took the opportunity. I have asked for my badge so I guess it will show up in due course. You set the pace CC so thank you ππ
Oh me too! Iβve told MJ to expect me! W1R1 here I come. πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈ Have you decided on your runniversary run yet? πππ
Oh wow Beachcomber, that is fantastic ππ»ββοΈππ³π₯ Go and get your shiny new medal (when you can walk againπ) and have a πΊ or two tonight to celebrate. I am really lagging behind now - havenβt even done 14k yet. Well done you!
I did the same, went to 16.99k I think. Anyway, it was just over 10.5 miles. And, like you, I didnβt get the elation I had with my first 10k. I wonder why that is. But remind yourself you were only 4K short of a half marathon!

Nooooo Flick....a period of resting very heavily on laurels called for!!! What are you all trying to do to me. πππ
Feel a bit as though I have jumped a stage Sandie, but maybe old guys like me have to grab the opportunity when it presents itself. It's funny, I think the injuries which resulted in trips to the physio have turned out to be blessings in(heavy) disguise. I seem to be stronger now which is probably down to the prescribed daily exercise routine. Whatever, I am sure that you and Dexy5 will just engage warp drive and cruise through to ten miles very soon. I will definitely wait for you before pressing on. I feel sleep is not far away! πππ΄π΄
It was cloudy here and therefore cooler for most of the run. It makes a big difference. I always run without music. I think that I just like the space and to enjoy what is happening around me; even the fox red lab who invited herself to join in. When I worked I was always βon callββ in one way or another. So it is nice to be in my own space and free from other voices or sounds in my ears for however long the run lasts. π
Thanks Bluebirdrunner. The second 8k went more quickly than the first one. I was probably delirious by then! You don't really notice the distance covered when you are running. Time for a pot of tea!π
Wow BC! Well done! I jumped from 12 to 16k for my first 10 miler and I hope you havenβt set your calves on fire like I did (thatβs what they felt like anyway)! I had to walk for ages to settle them down. Did another last week as per roseabiβs plan and they were much better behaved. I have to say I was nearly in tears when I did it but that might just have been because of my calves...
My legs feel disturbingly ok! I think that the slow pace was the key. It was 40 seconds per K slower than my 10k pace. Hopefully it was a classical long slow strength builder.π€π€
Sounds like you got it spot on. I always go too fast on my long runs, brain doesnβt seem to connect to legs when it tells them to slow down. πππ
Well done you!! Itβs an odd feeling isnβt it? I did just under 10 miles a couple of weeks ago (15.5k due to miscalculation )and felt pretty good. So a week later I pressed on and did 16.2 ( just to make sure) and was really on top of the world. Then last week I pushed on and did 18k.... the last 2 were quite hard but I was determined but then after Iβd done a good cool down walk and got home I nearly passed out whilst making breakfast. I had taken fuel and water too. Then I did burn 1400 calories whilst running so maybe thatβs why.
What Iβm saying is I didnβt feel very elated either at the time but now I am really proud of that distance. And Iβm 66 so not much different to you. I AM taking a couple days off now as I did too much gardening etc at weekend and wore myself out and Iβm not rushing to get to 21k for a little while either π€£
Thanks limberlou. Good to have your insight. I am drinking (zero and tea!) and having lots of protein so hopefully things will be ok. 10 miles has been on my mind since a seasoned runner I meet on the old railway reckoned that if I managed that I would have reached the point when I could βjust runβ and could drop the cautious approach. Not convinced, but I am looking forward to seeing him again!
Yeah I really love the long slower runs normally . I think a lot of my problem was I set off later than I normally do ...7.00am rather than 6.00 and by the time I was on the home straight it was pretty hot. Finished about 9.40 and it was getting hotter from about 8 onwards. I donβt do well in the heat. Might try again when itβs cooler
Wow Beachcomber , Iβve only just spotted this and you posted 3 hours ago. Huge congratulations to you on your 10 miles - that came from nowhere didnβt it?. You sound like how I felt after my 14k last week. So tired π€. Keep on drinking that water, but no more than 3 zero tablets in a day. π . I thought it was only (?) 16.1 km to the 10 miles but always best to be sure. I donβt stop running at parkruns unless my watch has buzzed 5k. Iβm sure a celebratory beer will be good for you πΊπ» you can take a few days off now.
Thanks Dexy5. Feel as though I have sneaked this one in! It just felt within reach.
Definitely taking a few days off. Legs feel fine though ; hope that remains the case. UTSβs recent efforts were part of the inspiration; so we can blame him. His race pace is amazing. Donβt think it will sink in until the shiny badge appears π. Only a park run away from a half marathon they are saying.. bit of resting on my laurels before I give that any serious thought! I am not red Adair after allπ₯π
Thanks old Floss. Definitely just a number! When I started C25k my head was full of doubts; did I have the muscle? flexibility? Every injury felt to be terminal for running purposes. Mainly I worried whether my heart would cope with running? I was asthmatic and had a few heart wobbles in my last few years of work. Now, I feel fitter than at any point since my 30s and the old ticker doesnβt need any medication. The plan works!π
Your prompt planted a seed! Heavily watered by Cheekychipmunks, as in water torture. She and Tasha are already mentioning Half Marathon on the 'it's only a Park Run further' tack. They will have me worn out!!ππ
