Hydration article

Spotted this on Facebook and thought some bits were useful. Obviously they're flogging ors products but the info is still reliable.

I used to take 500ml sports drink/high carb and the rest; 1.5l just flavoured water. I've now swapped to 1ltr with hydration tabs, 500ml sports and 500ml plain. I think it does make a difference on long runs.

Nice link. I’m just hoping there’s scales at the start and end of my event so I know how much to drink 🤣

It does have me thinking that a water/fruit juice/bit of salt mix is the way to go.

I do occasionally weigh myself after a long run... it's a great way to feel great about your weight, even with efficient hydration there's always few pounds gone 👍🏻🤣🤣

I don’t own scales anymore... but I’m thinking of getting the Garmin ones to show the other metrics... and so I guess I’ll be weighing myself again then 😱

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I didn't know Garmin had one... mine is bad enough, does bmi/hydration/muscle mass(supposedly)/bone weight/ something else I've forgotten!

I tend to do once a week maybe.

That’s the same kinda thing... Garmin index feeds into connect which I then assume will update my weight on my watch without me having to know!

I put on 3lbs on my long run, despite burning 1110 calories- due to the large quantity of Tailwind I consumed. I’m still getting rid of it!

That's not the idea! 🤣🤣🤣

Lol

It’s interesting. I used 24 fluid ounces of Tailwind on my very long run on Sunday and I think it was too much. I’m still getting rid of the resultant fluid retention: my fingers, face and ankles were very puffy. Electrolyte tablets don’t seem to have the same effect.

That's not a massive amount of fluid, 680ml. Has to be to do with what's in it. I've never had anything like that and I consume a higher level of fluid. 🤔 I'd be examining ingredients closer and trying some different products.

Another interesting article, states sodium causes fluid retention.

Maybe try just a small flask of TW and equal amount plain water next time, especially if you're not a heavy sweater...

in reply toGoGo_JoJo

I think I overdid it with the amount and dilution. It was a hot day and a long run. I don’t sweat massively and I don’t get thirsty. It’s all a learning curve! I normally take a small bottle for 10k plus runs

Plain water goes right through me! Not ideal on a long run. Tailwind is brilliant, I used it all last summer. I made it too strong this time. It’s quite innocuous. Here are the ingredients:

Dextrose (Glucose), Sucrose, Sodium Citrate, Sea Salt, Citric Acid, Organic Flavour, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Citrate and organic caffeine

Hmm, a quick search gave me a study saying sucrose can also affect fluid retention, so it might be double whammy, and especially if you had it stronger than usual.

in reply toGoGo_JoJo

I shan’t make that mistake again! I will use it for my HM though as it’s gotlt me through a lot of long hot weather runs energised.

I just drink water... my hydration daily is obviously enough for anything up to HM..:)

Interesting article though.. a though as you say...all about the cash:)

This is interesting too along the same lines...

Hmmm... I started adding a SiS tablet to my water during runs in the hot weather then making another one up when J finish. In not hot weather I just have the tablet when I finish. Last time I weighed myself during a run I put on half a kg bit overnight lost a kg. It is just what works for people I guess x
