October Half Marathon Group: Get into your training! πŸ’ͺ

Hi Group!

How have you been getting on this past week? Please share!!!

I upped my distance to 12K on my long run today. It was pretty warm, and VERY windy, but I wanted to get it done. I'm going to be juggling lots of life stuff over the next few weeks, so getting those runs, swims, and bikes in is going to be interesting! I'll take my runs whenever I can 😊

Apart from working on September's triathlon, I'm now thinking about increasing my long run to get somewhere near marathon condition ready for winter training. As we discussed last week, sometimes it's just TOO warm - and yesterday was definitely WAY TOO WINDY here πŸ˜„ But on a day like today, the challenge seems worthwhile. It might be warm for the Brighton Marathon, there could well be a strong headwind. If it turns out to be cool and still, I can really capitalise on the hard work I put in now and through the winter.

So, whatever your main focus for your half marathon - you may be looking to increase your long run gradually for a first HM, or improve your pb with some speed work, or work on your hill or trail technique, or etc. etc. Even if you have to fit in little bits wherever you can, like me - COMMIT YOURSELF TO YOUR TRAINING! Get stuck in and have fun with it 😊😊😊

Happy running!

roseabi xx

Feels like I’ve stagnated a bit recently, lots of 10k’s - I have a 10k event this weekend then I’m away for two weeks after that....

Off to Ibiza, so I’m hoping I can convince myself to get up early and get at least 1 (maybe 2) long runs might try for an 11 or 12?!?.

Here’s hoping 🀞

A run in Ibiza would be amazing! Do it!!!! And then put up a photo post here πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

All good at the moment πŸ˜€

After a lazy time last week in the heatwave, I managed the second 14k run of my abiplan on Sunday, and then yesterday did a fast (for me!) 10k in prep for Sunday’s Barry Island 10k race. So will now be doing very little ahead of Sunday, but am well on track with building up the distance for my Oct HM.

...but meanwhile, I must get around to doing some strength training sometime! 😬

Nice one!!!

I just did my "Stinking Pull-Ups" workout - has to be the shortest strength workout anyone ever did πŸ˜„

Hi Roseabi All good here. I have had 2 weeks of trying to improve my fitness. The usual Pilates Class, 2 Cross Fit Classes and a Personal Trainer Session. Plus some runs at 5/6/7K as i get ready for the Stratford 10k early Sept. Note to self People of more mature years shouldn't think they are still 21 and try to keep up with younger athletes who do Cross Fit regularly. Result lot's of aches in places i didn't even know could ache. The other peculiarity is the shorts are doing wonders for the front of the legs tanning but the backs are still like Chalk. So maybe i should reverse my normal run or run backwards. LOL. Your training sounds awesome and inspirational thanks for the posts.

roseabiUltramarathonβ€’ in reply toMrFox001

Well done, Mr Fox! Seems like those shorts need a bit of a talking to though...

My HM isn't until Feb, but I like reading what u guys are upto...! I'm building a 3x 5k week base again, with plans to increase a long run upto 10k so I can start HM training in ernest in October when u are all doing your HM. Also doing cross training. Just booked into a intensive swim week long class for front crawl, as basically I have very little swim skills. I've been doing reverse lunges and squats this week to help my running. Onwards and upwards.

Wow, you're on fire!

Swimming course sounds fab, I'd love to hear how you get on!! xxx

Will do. It's a one hour swim per evening in a group , really hope it's going to get me going to consistant swimming. I've just read a great book Alexandra Heminsley, Leap in. ( She wrote, run like a girl, as well) Apparently front crawl has only been developed over the last 100 years from a stroke native Americans used. so it's a baby compared to running. It's not a natural thing to do, front crawl. So I don't feel so bad I'm pants at it...!

Hi all, great to see how everyone is getting on. Really spurs me on 😍

My long run was up to 12k 2 weeks ago, but last week only managed 9k as it was very hilly and very hot. Plan is another 12k long run this week on Friday, then a 10k race next weekend before upping the long runs again. Just working really hard to try and stick to the plan. 🀞

I've got an interesting run with my running club tonight. No watches allowed, out and back path, you pick where to turn around, run at your own pace and try and get back as close to 40 minutes as you can. No idea how this is going to work out, but it should have some amusing outcomes πŸ˜‚

I'm on holiday in Crete. We had a small earthquake this morning that wobbled the furniture for a few seconds. Far too dangerous to go running...

Absolutely!

Hope you're having a great time xxx

I’m beginning to extend the long run beyond the training plan. Looking ahead, the longest run is about 1.30 (or that might be 1.50), so I’m a bit concerned about getting the distance in. So after my Sunday run, which is always a snails pace pootle in zones 1&2, I’m going to save the planned run, then start another run immediately. Other than that, I’m really enjoying the hr zone training still, especially when I get to run in zones 3&4.

Hi Roseabi, I just did a short 2K run this evening to keep my legs going. I’ve got the Regents Park 10K on Sunday so didn’t want to risk anything by going too far or fast. I might squeeze another run in between now and then🀞

Swam in a lake for the 1st time in many years. Water was dark and when I can to a shallow part where the stream was entering the lake I stood up, the water was clear enough to see about 5 big carp and some baby fish. I am not the bravest of peeps but I just stood still and watched the fish, it was a calm and peaceful moment. Then I kept swimming forward in the deep dark water it was a great personal experience today. I am planning to run 7 miles on Friday. πŸ˜€ Happy running!

Hi all, I’m back to 3x5k a week, with stationary bike to supplement. My foot is still not right, the pain in the ball of my foot more niggly now but don’t want to risk making it worse. Darn beach run, it’s most frustrating! Fingers crossed I’ll be able to start to increase distance again soon.

Having a great week on my delayed start to the plan. Today was especially good, negotiated Β£15 a month off my broadband, Β£64 a month off my sky bill and topped it off with a nice 7k run. Back at 10 a week on Saturday and then onwards!

All good on the snail front thanks roseabi! I did my longest run to date of 18k today. I can’t say I enjoyed it much after about 13k, but I was chuffed to bits when I’d finished. πŸ‘

I have the Severn Bridge 10k at the end of August, and the GSR in October, but I’ll continue to work towards my personal HM goal. No race planned due to impending first time grandparenthood in September, otherwise I might have entered Bristol. I will be doing one though! πŸ˜€

achieved first ever 10mile run, 😊

Signed up to the Manchester half marathon on 13th October 😊

now fully committed 😊

Dropped from 3 runs a week which I have maintained since starting c25k just over a year ago to 2 runs and extra gym night, legs feel much fresher 😊

Congratulations on your first 10 miles πŸ˜€

I find it hard to fit in 3 runs too. I did runs on consecutive days last week. The first time since completion of C25K last October. I really felt it in my last run. I've mucked it up this week again, as the only way I can fit it all in is another consecutive day run. I'm undecided how I'm going to proceed. But your right having fresh legs is so dammed good !

Good thanks. Getting all my runs done and ticked off. Enjoying the Nike app coached runs no end. Did a tempo one today towards the speed run challenge malarky The 5k tempo run I did this morning was nothing like I'd envisaged and planned last night. I don't know why I bother. LOL I hadn't planned to head off-road and do the last half on stony, hilly trail. Ridge and furrow mud as well. My best shoes!!!!!! Well miffed off. The coached tempo run INCLUDED a warm up and a break (to stretch and/or do slides) I'd walked about 15 minutes before pressing "go" whereupon she said we'd start with a warm-up. Doh! I don't know why but I expected to hit "go" and run flat out. Oh well, now I know.

The female coach was a running moutaineer from Dubai. So you get coached on how to run a tempo run and a geography lesson. Very interesting. The time really flies by on these coached runs

I did a 20km last Friday, two recovery runs - a 9 km and a 7 km, today's 5k tempo run, and I'm doing a 18.5 km run on Saturday, or tomorrow depending on how I feel

Apart from toe nails issues I'm good. Feeling ok

It's been confirmed I deffo have psoriasis so now I have all the creams etc Shorts have been prescribed as the cure. Sunlight is the best thing apparently so I have to get my legs out. Shorts on order! I've gone for the many-pocketed Ron Hill marathon shorts with matching vest (from the sales) My upper body is worse at the moment but I'm not keen on just running in a crop top but never say never. On the trail I don't really mind. I could do with lying on a beach somewhere sunny. Fat chance!

have a good rest of the week everyone. Take care out there! Have FUN!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathonβ€’ in reply tomisswobble

I had a go at running in my bra once, it felt a bit weird! Nice and cool though.

Sorry to hear about the psoriasis, hope the sunshine does its job xxx

Those Nike runs sound really interesting!!

misswobble profile image
misswobbleMarathonβ€’ in reply toroseabi

I did my long run yesterday in 22 degrees, which felt hot and sticky, on the tricky trail Very boggy and dirty in places

My turon escaped it’s wrapper and welded itself to the inside of my pocket 😁. I still ate it though ☺️ I took a slice of malt loaf in my back pocket It was lovely. I saved it for when I was dying on my arse towards the end of the 18.5 km

I ran a two-hour coached session with the Nike app πŸ‘

Wipe out πŸ„β€β™‚οΈ for me this week 😫Not been feeling my best πŸ€’πŸ€§ . I managed 7.5km yesterday.. now this is what I call an improvised run, a jazz run, running Miles Davis 🎺.. Basically my aim was 10km but after 3km I realised that it just wasn't happening Daddy-O, so I turned it into an interval run... 20 minutes, then walked 5 minutes, ran 10 minutes, walked 5 minutes, ran 10 minutes... and actually turned a disappointing run into something I was pretty happy with. Parkrun tomorrow, and then I'll start running past 10km next week. 😬

So I'm preparing for my HM which I haven't even booked yet! I'm really struggling with choosing a race.. they all look good! I just need to make a decision. A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.

Been away on work all week again, so running in different place. Had a goal pace run this week and for some stupid reason did it on the hotel treadmill!! Big mistake. I won't be doing that again! On the upside not working from home gave me plenty of time to walk and stretch my legs to the office and back!!

Long run was meant to be today but got home at stupid o'clock so rescheduled for tomorrow - looking forward to it - 1hr slow pace, 10 mins goal pace and 5 mins faster than goal pace. Now if only I could pace myself properly I would be fine πŸ˜‰!!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathonβ€’ in reply toRichard7

Well done!!

How was the long run?

Richard7 profile image
Richard7Half Marathonβ€’ in reply toroseabi

First hour of slow running was fine - although quite warm and dry! Still struggling to get my pace right for the other two sections. Did ok with it and hit my targets which was good but a much tougher run than my last long run. Looking at my plan next week's long is longer again!! Hee hee racking up the distance again!

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserMarathon

I’m umming and arrring.

I have just had to reschedule my latest long run as I had a bit of an accident whilst pretending to be one of the Tarahumara whilst doing a hike in Wales. Serves me right choosing β€˜Born to Run’ as a holiday read 🀣 I thought I was fine but had trouble sleeping as my right knee’s ligaments shouted at me all night and then my back was sore. So, I rested a day, they improved but I thought 17km today really isn’t a good idea as I felt nearly as creaky as I did before I ran. However, this afternoon I put on my runners and did a really fast (for me) 5k - Wow! didn’t see that coming - A over T I’d gone the other day, I really thought I’d be hobbling back to the osteopath but I’m assuming better fitness and core strength has saved me! Two days to recover!! Isn’t this running stuff wonderful?!!

So, now I’m thinking, I’ve mucked Week 8 up, I’ve got 2 10k events coming up in early September, do I really want to aim for an October HM? Why am I doing this? It’s not as if I have an event lined up for it. So, what I’m thinking is, delay it a month and do it on my birthday in November? I did my first 10k on my last birthday, so this would be a fitting way to do it? Also, that means I’m not at such a loss if I’ve done it and I’ve not got that VLM place. And I can eat loads on my birthday and really, really deserve it 😎

Following my second 10k last Monday, just come back from a week in Croatia with my uni pals! Looking at doing either a 5 miler or a 7 (!) miler this week, but taking it slow because of my plantar fasciitis acting up... If i don’t manage the 7 before Sunday it’s on my to do list for next week! Hoping to get up to 10, but preferably 11.5 miles before September 29th (aka race day)
