Hi everybody!!!

Here we are at the official start of the OHMG! October Half Marathon Group 😊😊😊

What an amazing photo of the start of the Royal Parks Half!? I'm very envious of all of you who are running it, and I may well put my name in the hat for next year's πŸ˜„

I want to wish you loads of luck and fun with your training over the next few months, and whether or not you're actually starting training this week, remember to keep a little strength training in your routine!

Here is the circuit I shared with the Spring group for a little yummy taster...

Happy running!!!

Hi Roseabi, I started my HM training with a 6K in sunny BognorπŸŒžπŸ˜ŽπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ It was supposed to be 5K but I miscalculated the distance😳 I did manage negative splits for the first time ever though so I was pleased with that!πŸ˜€πŸ‘

Good start with an accidental extra km :)

Well, I’m starting from further back than I thought... I have a slight groin strain and dropped from 18 miles the week before last to 4K total last week 😱

It’s feeling better day by day but I think this will be another light week. Hoping to get back to parkrun a week on Saturday and will have to plan from that point as my average weekly mileage (over the previous four weeks) will have nearly halved.

Nobody said this was going to be easy, and I’m already thinking that mine being early November is a good thing as I have an extra month to get back to my usual running.

Have a great first week on the official journey to HM everybody.

David_GMetric Marathonβ€’ in reply toUnfitNoMore

Good luck to you too UFN! It’s never good to be injured when you want to be out thereπŸ˜• The only slightly good thing is it’s happened early in the training so you have a reasonable amount of time to recoverπŸ™‚πŸ‘πŸ€ž

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreMetric Marathonβ€’ in reply toDavid_G

Yeah... I’d rather it now than in mid September! I did 70km walking last week, so Garmin still had me way above the 150 minutes of activity, just 0 strenuous stuff, even kept the heart rate down on my short runs... maybe that’s gonna be handy going forwards.

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserMarathonβ€’ in reply toUnfitNoMore

Everything crossed for a speedy fix UFN 🀞🀞🀞

UnfitNoMore profile image
UnfitNoMoreMetric Marathonβ€’ in reply toTailChaser

It seems to be going well. Physio says light and short running only. Walking is ok as long as not up mountains so I’ve been walking 5k every morning and evening. It’s feeling a lot better today than it did this time last week... but I’m resisting the urge for a 10k run. The wife on the other hand would love me to be out running it as she’s off today and I’m grumpy 🀣

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserMarathonβ€’ in reply toUnfitNoMore

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I know that feeling πŸ˜‚. Fab news UFNπŸ‘

Oh sighhhhh. If only ....

Physio today prodded and pulled and twisted and squeezed my foot. He discovered there is now a very definite area of pain to touch - 2nd metatarsal. Likely stress fracture based on today's assessment. He has requested an MRI (if I haven't been called in two weeks I should contact them .... didn't dare ask how long the wait is for the scan, probably about as long as the amount of time wasted since I first went to the GP). Oh, and I shouldn't even be walking on it (cycling OK though)! No work, no dog walking. No way! So we compromised and I've ordered an aircast boot while I await the MRI. This doesn't feel like a quick fix. Even if not a stress fracture, it's likely to be a month before that's confirmed and there will be a lot to rebuild by then. I am so miserable right now. So all you people starting this week, get out there and make sure you enjoy your training on my behalf. I will be watching you all closely - there's not much else I can do! And don't anyone be smart and mention strength training right now 🀬

Linda..noooo! I have been watching for your post..! This is horrid.

MRI results can take a while..(in my area)

you are not a priority as a runner..

Mine was 6 wks coming through..

Rest Up....retail therapy and a treat...is what is needed!

Ugh. 6 weeks? I looked up the cost privately but it's out of reach! At least once I have the boot I will feel the healing is happening. Plus now we're fairly sure where the problem is I know which part of my foot to protect. I'll get used to it and perk up, but for today I feel sh**e. So much wasted time when my gut told me this was the problem right from the start. Hey ho. Tomorrow can only be better! Thanks for the concern, it's appreciated 😘

I only told you the possible wait to prepare you. I nearly went insane waiting! I looked at private..I have a plan..but the first one was a ridiculous price.!

I'm starting my plan with a 10k race on Sunday. I needed something to give me a kick up the bum over the last few weeks so I am ready to start and that seems to have been the motivation I needed. Gonna be a lot slower than the 10k I did back in January where I amazed myself with my time, but I should be able to run (/jog) all the way to the end and that's my normal aim.

It's also been a good reminder that if I regularly do the NHS's knee exercises for runners, my knees can cope with a lot more running than if I don't!! Going to keep that up and yoga on my non-running days in the hope that I can stop my body falling apart too much :)

Oh I think I must be the only person here doing a mid-Sept HM! (Now I feel a bit left out!) Have started training, using a tweaked version of your plan. So far, so okay! If mine is before everyone else’s I can be magnanimous and show you how a HM is NOT done! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathonβ€’ in reply toSadie-runs

Aw, I'm sure that won't be the case xxx

I don't have you on my list! Which HM are you doing?

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply toroseabi

Oh! I thought I had told the world! It’s a wee obscure local HM - Beckenham Sept 15th. I only entered it because the start line is 15 min walk from my house, and thought it would be rude not to. πŸ˜‚ And thank you - think I am doing everything right, including strength training, but am totally paranoid about injuring myself during training, I am awfully twinge prone! xxx

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathonβ€’ in reply toSadie-runs

Added 😊

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserMarathon

Done my first run! Yay!!! Just a steady little 5k to get started.

Actually feeling pretty excited about this as it’s more than just the usual 3 runs/week, it’s a whole new challenge! I may not have a HM planned but if in 16 weeks time I’ve achieved my goal then I know I’m in control if the miracle happens and I get that London Marathon place, and if I don’t, well I haven’t lost anything have I? I’ll still be able to run 13.1 miles πŸ˜€

For starters, from now on I’m now making sure I keep a better eye on my pace so I make sure I don’t go out too fast.

Please add me to the group roseabi . I need to find my distance mojo again! Will sign-up for a late summer early autumn HM with the plan to target a sub 2 hour time. In the meantime I'll be extending my 10k+ runs at the required 5:40 sub-2hr pace incrementally. I'll use the easy DIY plan I used last season of: 3 runs per week - a 5k recovery jog a 10k tempo+ run, then a long run at 10k +x% at a min 5:40 pace extending it up to HM distance.

Well, I’m starting this with a week off. No injuries thankfully, it’s just that I read somewhere that taking a week off occasionally is a good idea and I figured I could do with the break. Besides, it might have stopped raining by the end of my week.

I still haven’t done anything more than sporadic strength training. Maybe this week is a good time to start. The NHS Knee exercises for runners (nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/k... that was mentioned by R4inbow looks like a good idea. All I need now is to try and remember where I put my motivation...
