I haven't been around these pages much of late as still struggling with the niggly butt aka piriformis syndrome. This originally started during the later stages of half marathon training, and resulted in my leg repeatedly giving way on the HM. I kept my runs shortish after the HM but the butt pain was still bothering me, and just got worse when I attempted a slightly longer run.
So far I have tried sports massage, acupuncture, tennis ball rolling and various exercises and stretches. The only thing that gave me relief for a couple of days was a marvellous yoga session I went to on the pier a couple of weeks back. But then I went to a Pilates class and set it off again. I have been doing yoga ever since, and even paid for a private lesson, but the blessed relief has eluded me. I have stopped running now and stopped doing anything that might aggravate it (Pilates and dancing!). I have a physio appointment booked for 12th May with a much recommended guy in Bexhill, so fingers crossed for that. In the meanwhile I am throwing myself into gardening, my original obsession before running came along and stole the limelight! Hope to be back out on the trail before too long, I am longing for it!
Happy running all and commiserations to all those on the IC - a very frustrating place to be π¬

Oh poor you, that's rotten (though the garden will be thankful of course). My quad issue went on for months, no-one could find anything to fix it or even to identify the cause and it was miserable, felt like it would never ever go away. Like you, I wondered if pilates was aggravating rather than helping. But at last it appears to be better. For now at least! And it's a wonderful feeling. Almost worth waiting for
I do hope the physio can offer some relief. In the meantime, much sympathy π
Thank you Linda π That's good to know your quad issue has let up, for the time being at least! This butt issue has been going on for 3 months now, it feels like forever! I was feeling really despondent about it but since I got that little bit of relief through yoga I feel there is hope! The one thing I haven't tried is rest (silly me!) so hopefully that and the physio will sort it
Thank you Abi - should've listened to you and gone to physio ages ago! Everyone at my running club recommended this sports therapist, which is essentially massage & acupuncture, but it didn't hit the spot π
Thank you Deals, yes it's a real pain in the butt to have a pain in the butt for so long! I really hope this physio can help, I want to get back out there!
I'm so sorry to hear you are still struggling with that. Hopefully Physio can get to the bottom of it (oops! No pun intended π) and fix you up. In the meantime, enjoy your gardening.
Nooo MS, thatβs such a shame, especially with the nicer weather returning. But as others have said, your garden will appreciate you all the more! π π· πΉ π»
Hopefully the physio appointment will help. KeepImg everything π€ for you. π
Oh dear sorry to hear that Equi π That's such a bummer to not be able to attend an event you have booked. I purposely have not booked anything else since my hobbly half. I keep itching to book just a weeny race but until I have sorted this out I will try to hold back!
Try this... I got my first night's sleep in five weeks. after I started these.. (trapped sciatic nerve..non running injury, which impacted on the piriformis)....This link was given to me by a forum friend ... many folk have used this as I have passed it on...it may help!
I'm joining the part of the IC gang and I'm not happy about it either !!
I thought I had niggly butt aka piriformis syndrome too (developed during HM training) but an osteopath seemed to think it was sciatica...either way it's been a month without running and a very miserable me so I truly sympathise with your situation. The prescribed 'active rest' doesn't quite give me the joy that running does
I've an appointment with a physio next week but I've a feeling 'blessed relief' may elude me too.
Fingers crossed I'll virtually see you/cross paths on those trails soon
Sorry to hear you've got the dreaded butt syndrome too - from what I've read it's the inflamed piriformis muscle pressing into the sciatic nerve that gives the pain, so it's virtually indistinguishable from sciatica. My pain isn't as bad as others I've heard describe so I'm lucky really (!) but I just want to be able to run long distances again without my leg giving way! Good luck with your physio appointment, let us know how you get on!
But the physio didn't think it was nerve issues so not sciatica which is good. His diagnosis is hamstring tendonopathy...& he feels positive that some exercises over the next couple of weeks will mean I can start running again (yayyyyy). Although I still have some back ache which is going to be assessed at my next appointment (the interesting bit!)
Fingers crossed it's the beginning of the road to recovery...I'm feeling positive
That sounds positive, let's hope the exercises do the trick. It's a relief to know the cause of your pain isn't it, and to have a plan to sort it out. I have been diagnosed with a wonky pelvis! Apparently due to my dodgy sitting habits - now to be altered! I've been given exercises to do too, although he reckoned it will be 6-8 weeks before I'm completely better. But the good news is, I can run!!! Short distances only for now, but I'm happy with that. Good luck with your next appointment for your back
I sympathise with you as I suffer with this too, especially at night time in bed and especially after a long run, itβs such a nuisance MutleyShuffle. Good luck with everything π π
