Here we are on the first day of the Winter Speed Challenge!!!!
Please note: I am NOT COLLECTING PRE-DETERMINED BASE TIMES for this challenge, your base time will be set by your first run. All you have to do is run, and then tell me the average pace you recorded.
There's still time to join in if you wish, please comment below 😊😊😊

Are oh you indeed! Pulls face. Get out there! It's freezing and blowing flippin gales but ne'er mind that. Once you throw yourself into it you'll soon be scorchio, I guarantee it.
5k is fine. Pick a route and run it sometime this week - tell me your average pace for the run. That will be your starting point for the challenge. Then run the same route the following week and so on until the end of the challenge. If you can't manage it every week that's perfectly fine xx
I'm just on my way back from Mexico, so I feel like it's destiny that I sign up for this. I'm not actually feeling like speedy Gonzales, but I have managed a few morning runs including my first ever go on the hotels dreadmill. It was so humid and hot I couldn't manage a long run outside. Not looking forward to coming home to freezing cold Blighty.
I am not sure I can join... I am training hard for a marathon, so I am not speeding much, but I do have a HM tempo training every Tuesday:
10 miles with 6 miles 10-20% slower than marathon pace (say 8'15 to 8'30) and then last 4 miles (I can try to get 6.5 Km in if it simplifies.. ) at half marathon to 15K pace.
Two weeks ago I managed 27'30'' for the last 4 miles (but it does not count...)
Today I got the 28' for 4 miles. can I still join this week?
I moved away from my usual speed track to do the winter speed challenge, and am instead doing a fairly flat 5k hobbit run from my workplace. I went out today on minimal sleep and bashed out my baseline run in 26.12, pace 5.13 min/km. I've done it faster before, and it's a long way short of my best 5k speed, but I was reasonably pleased because I felt rotten and the wind was no fun. Plenty of room for improvement though..!
Hi Abi, for some reason when we do these speed challenges, we get a dump of snow :). I did two tester 5s and my first quicker 5 today was 5:40 pace in 28:22. It's not my quickest - hopefully some of the snow will be gone by next wk. And a couple degrees warmer wouln't hurt. Today was minus 5 but the rest of the week is minus 17-20. Might be more indoor loops for me...but on the bright side I am finally past my lurgy from last week.
I heard on the news you guys had a massive dump of snow! I was just a wee bit jealous but we have some snow in our forecast this weekend 🤞👏 just in time to head north snowmobiling again (still no running for me 😔 but I am hoping to get a little trot in in a winter wonderland at a northern lake village this weekend 🙏). Glad to hear you're over that dreaded lurgy!
yeah, it was fine until people got into their cars - it's like they all forgot how to drive in these conditions. Ah Toronto... The snow is great - the minus 35 wind chill today I could live without. Yeah I think we got your weather by mistake
Please put my base time down as a 10k at 56:54. I managed a PB today! I might have shot my bolt a bit too early? Felt good though. Very snowy and lumpy/icy paths, so I might be able to knock a bit more off on a clear track.
Thanks for picking up my week 1 pace from Strava! I feel I have had a lucky start as I ran the club 10km route with a newbie this week so it was a nice comfy pace to make sure she didn't get left behind and lost. (She was very nice and great company too.)
Of course it has now committed me to doing the 10km route every week and not wimping out to the 5km route.
Sat 5k Parkrun. Pace 5:30. Time 27:42 5.03 km ... Lots of snow (30 cm) so the start was like a slow procession along a narrow path through the drifts. A bit rough on the old ankles again with all the lumpy foot holes/icy bits.
Hi Roseabi, I’ve just about managed to get a 5K in before the end of the first week.🏃♂️😊Could you record my pace as 6:39/km please? Hopefully that’ll give something to aim at next time🙂 Thanks 👍
