I knew there was a reason I was drawn to running the trails and would choose it over road running any day! This article has me completely pegged (right down to the over sharing ๐)

Oh that article makes me want to try more trail running. ๐
I do love the solitude of the trails! There were so many points in that article that resonated with me. I can't wait until I can get back to the trails this summer. Running the coulee in front of my house helps, but doesn't quite give the same feeling of peace and clarity that I get from hitting the gruelling trails at the lake. Something to look forward to.....
I can identify with much of that ๐
This aligns closely with many of the trail runners I know too. I need to try some trails this coming season!
You really do. I think you'll love it. I suppose there are people who don't but if you enjoy the solitude of running and enjoy spending time in nature, it is the best of both worlds. I believe there are supposed to be some good trails by you. Give it a whirl... you know you want to ๐
Maybe I need to try more trail running!
Oh that's me to a T ๐ (See also the journaling beside a rock bit...). This year I'm moving away from road running events a little, baby steps though because trail runs are a bit tougher and I want to make sure I'm up to it. I love being out in the countryside, I'm looking forward to getting more wild, heathery hills in my life.
You'll love the trail events! Smart though to work into them. That is what I've done over the last 2 years, enrolling in a longer distance every year - 5k the first year (I was just getting back into running) where I got hooked on trails, 10k last year and Yippee, 20k this year! I'm looking at some trail running events that are away and have my eye set on a 25k in BC (the Broken Goat ๐) that sounds amazing for next year. It has some required gear but I think I finally have everything I need. There are a few others in the Rockies that require bear spray....I'm steering away from them ....for now ๐ป๐จ). I think my goal is to do our local 50k for my 50th...fortunately it is a few years away.
Bear spray! ๐ฒ I didn't even know that was a thing! The worst we need is midge spray ๐ I think your trails put my scottish ones into perspective a bit. Maybe one day I'll go proper wild, with all the required sprays!
They actually make a belt, similar to a flip belt, that holds the bear spray for quick access and you can attach your poles or a jacket in another part of it. The rules were clearly stated that the bear spray had to be accessible and not tucked away in a pack. Bear spray is just potent pepper spray so it wouldn't stop a truly motivated bear. When I lived and hiked in bear country we would joke that bear bells people wear was to just let the bears know their meal was coming and the bear spray was a seasoning ๐. I miss the beauty of living there but camping where I live now is much easier. You can keep cooking utensils/camp stoves, coolers out of your vehicle. When you camp in a tiny 13" boler, it is nice to not have to pack everything inside every time you leave your site.
Iโd love some trails in Italy... but itโs not a thing where I am, so end up on tarmac always. But one day, I will find a trail which allows me to be in the countryside running through it, rather than alongside it as I presently do. Nice article though and interesting - definitely makes me want to find a trail I wonder if London has one!
Sounds perfect but my over protective (=caring) husband doesn't like me running roads on my own. If I announced I was off cross country for a couple of hours he'd have a fit.
Statistically I am probably more likely to die driving to and from work...

You just need to convince him to take up running and join you! That is my plan this summer since my trail running partner is scaling back. I also upgraded to the premium form of Runkeeper this year and it has live tracking. Hubby wonโt come on long runs or all the runs so Iโm hoping it works ok when I lose cell coverage. At least if iโm on my own and gone longer than anticipated he can see where I am and if Iโm still on the move.
