Tech malfunction, sleet and hellish hill - but I did it!! 😌

Really pleased I managed my 12k run today, despite tech gremlins trying to derail me! I thought I would be clever today and mapped a new route out on the PC with MapMyRun. Wanted to use that as some sections of my route were off-road and I wanted to plan a reasonably accurate distance. All went well at first, route saved and on MapMyRun app on phone. Started my five minute warm up walk and when I had a minute or so to go, started up the app on my phone to get ready. Then when the five minutes were up I tried to start a run on my Garmin too - I thought I could have Garmin Connect/Strava and MapMyRun all going at the same time - I think that was my mistake! The Garmin started making weird buzzing noises and just displayed Time: Distance: with no info. Tried to go back and it said Deleting, with the little timer circle meaning wait. This went on for some time and I was getting quite frustrated, f'ing and blinding at my watch! Had to start my run with MapMyRun only and couldn't get any more sense out of my watch - it buzzed happily all the way round and wouldn't display anything other than "deleting..."

Dear oh lord, to be so reliant on tech!! Anyway the run itself was nice, a stretch on small roads, then a lovely track through woods, then country lanes - a bit scarey with traffic whizzing by now and then - then one of my favourite quiet lanes in Westfield, a nearby village, and back again. Just before I reached the halfway point it started sleeting and for quite a bit of the return journey I was pelted on the face with needle-sharp sleet! Luckily I was warmed up by then so didn't mind too much. The wooded track on the way back was uphill, and the hill seemed to go on forever, but I managed to keep running - very slowly!

This time my legs didn't feel tired towards the end, despite tackling the mega-hill, and I managed to pick up speed a bit for the last couple of km - helped by the fact they were sloping downhill! Enjoyed the run apart from the tech annoyances at the start. Managed to upload the run to MapMyRun and entered it manually on Strava. I think I will stick with Strava in future! Felt very pleased to have reached 12k - my furthest distance so far. I wasn't fast but I was quite steady, apart from diving into the hedge every time a car came by! Love this exploring new routes, lots more to discover yet! Happy weekend running peeps πŸ˜ŠπŸƒπŸ’ͺ

Sounds like a great success despite the tech, well done. It was pretty nasty out there today!

I always have MMR on my phone and my garmin going to. Then when I save garmin it pushes it to strava. No conflict at all - on a normal day!

If you want more info in strava from this morning's run, you can export a file from mmr and then import it into strava. I have done this successfully in the past several times before I got my garmin, although once or twice it was decidedly dodgy and manual was better! If you want to try it, let me know and I can give you more info

Thanks Linda, that's interesting, I wondered if there was a way I could import more info from MMR to Garmin - but you know what, I think I've had enough tech for one day, I may just leave it as it is! If I use MMR again and I have problems, I'll get back to you! Is your HM training going well? Who would've thought we could run this far?! 😁

A great run despite some tech glitches. Not the way you want to start your run but you persevered and nailed it. Great job!

Im glad You didn’t let the troublesome tech spoil your run, it can be so frustrating sometimes 🀬 well done on the great distanceπŸ‘. you have inspired me to have a go as I’ve been knocking about the 10/11K mark occasionally but I think I’ll give it a try. I Wish I had such a nice route but I’m afraid it will have to be around the pavements of south London in the dark before work. Love the way you are keeping your running fresh by seeking out new routes as the countryside is beautiful where you are.

Well doneπŸ‘πŸ˜€

Thanks so much Runsome 😊 That's amazing if I have inspired you to try running further! Awesome! πŸ€— Go you! Yes the countryside is beautiful around here - one of the reasons I moved here from London - I'm really enjoying exploring new routes. I might try some of the 1066 Country Walk, something I've been meaning to do for years! Are you not around these parts any more? I thought you were local as you have done a few of the same races as me.

Hi MutleyShuffle yes those summer 10k’s we did in the heat were killers weren’t they and I still live in this lovely corner of east Sussex, but I drive up to London each day dark start/dark home late and no local street lights means I can’t run locally in the winter. I always do parkrun Saturday where I’ve spotted you a few times. (PB yesterday). Hopefully I will get out as many times as I can during the Christmas break especially if it’s as smashing out as it is today. Keep on with those lovely runs of yours πŸ‘πŸ˜€

Wow well done on your PB yesterday! I wasn't there but I heard conditions were challenging! That's a shame you can't run locally in the winter, but hope you get some South London runs in, and yes, enjoy your Christmas running! Do say hello if you spot me at Park Run, I am often in my own little bubble and need a nudge!! Hoping to be there New Year's Day πŸ€—πŸƒπŸŽ…πŸŽ„

Yes I will definitely say hello. I think you were marshalling last time I saw you as I think you had one of you races the next day. 😊

Well done MS, huge distance! I have a love/hate thing with tech too. But you did it and that’s great! πŸ‘πŸ‘

Note I’m only lurking on this forum really. I have no intention of running beyond 10k! Snails have their limits you know! 🐌

Thanks Cheeky! Ha ha I once said "I'm not interested in running a half marathon, 10k is far enough for me", and here I am training for a HM! Even snails can build endurance you know! 😁

Great run! Longer runs are the business and once you reach a certain level of fitness it is no problem to trot along well within your comfort zone.

Thanks Lordi, you know I think you are right, I was surprised that my legs didn't feel tired towards the end of this one - I'm looking forward to building up the distance! 😊
