How are you doing with your goals this year?

So.... its that time of year when we start looking at the goals we set for ourselves ( if any at all). I think its always good to take a step back and celebrate any achievements small or big, and think about the following year.

Lets have a chat about how we have done and any learning and thoughts for next year...

I am up to 915 miles and I am really hoping to meet my target of 1000 miles for the year as I didnt last year.✔️

My streak has continued✔️

Pull up training- this is so NOT on track, it might be a 2 year plan rather than one!!! ✖️

Love the pic! And you are just amazing!

My goal was to hit 10K with you and your Magic number plan. And with your help I did it! Not as soon as I'd hoped due to injury, but I did it all the same. I had no other aspirations other than to keep on running. Here I am, still running, a 10 mile race under my belt and beginning training for a HM in March next year. You're right, that's well worth stepping back and celebrating :) Goals for next year have to be to complete the Half Marathon, but also to enjoy it (I didn't enjoy my 10 mile race and that was a bit sad). I'm sure I won't run any further than HM so I will need to find what will keep me motivated to run - so far it's been one challenge after another and the sense of progress; not sure what will replace that next year - TBC :D

I have completed two half marathons this year (my first ones!!!)

Unfortunately I have also put on weight as I can't seem to stop eating as if I am still running 20 miles a week..... when that's in under control I'll be happy!

Next half in May

ju-ju- profile image
ju-ju-Marathon in reply to Sinross

well done, and I think the food thing is so hard when you do marathon training as the eating becomes habit! I am sure you will nail that one!

GREAT pic!!!

I got through all the races I'd booked this year - if rather more slowly than I'd have liked! Actually that's not quite true, I deferred the Brighton & Hove Triathlon, but that was only because I'd double-booked myself 😄

I managed to pass my fundraising target for the 100K, which was a relief!

I went windsurfing on the sea - several times!

I've been through the wars with niggles and training, and I think I'm quite a bit stronger now than I was this time last year.

Having said that, I too have not got very far with my pull-ups. I reckon there's a mental game at play!

I found it very difficult to cope with having so many Spring races booked, and my plan is to rein it back A LOT next year. I thought long and hard before booking my half marathon for March - decided to go for it so I didn't miss the chance, but if I don't feel up to it on the day I won't be going.

No marathons or ultras for me next year, but I'll be working on decent PBs for 5K, half marathon, and triathlon. And getting somewhere with the pull-ups and windsurfing 😊😊😊😊😊

Oh, and I'm going to be 50 next year, so I'll be doing a lot of celebrating 💥

1) Not die from being a lazy good-for-nothing couch-sitter. ✔

2) Find something worthwhile to do - to make not-dying worthwhile. ✔

3) Lose weight - from 86 Kilos, target 79 Kilos. Ummm, 80 Kilos with a month to go....

4) Make new friends. (That's you lot) ✔

OK, no running in that list, I hadn't even heard of Couch to 5K in January, I found out in late April. Next year 10K for sure!👍

Brilliant photo JuJu! The first 3 totally sum up why I resolved to not make any more resolutions years ago 😁

Great idea to look back at what we have achieved this year, regardless of whether that was your intent on January first, everyone on here has achieved so much this thread is bound to be very popular! Well done on your run-streak, I can't even begin to imagine running every day for 2 weeks let alone 2 years, through illness, busy periods and foul weather, you are an inspiration 😍

2019 didn't get off to a great start, GP telling me my BP and cholesterol were high but at least I didn't have diabetes (yet 😟). I had lost count of the number of times I had tried and failed all manner of C25K programs, I'm not even sure why I started the One You App in January, surely I was destined to fail again....

But here I am, not only am I running 3-4 times a week, taking part in 10k races and seriously thinking I might be able to complete a HM, the fat kid who hated cross-country (AKA round the school's sports field-) running with a passion, is but a distant memory.

I'm 10kg lighter, my BP is slap bang in the middle of normal and I can only guess that my good:bad cholesterol ratio will have improved although to be honest my diet is still centred around the 2 main food groups; chocolate and biscuits, with the occasional cream cake for balance.🍰 I'm sure I read somewhere that runners need lots of carbs😉

Next year I have signed up for a Virtual Runner Challenge, the one where you commit to covering X km per month, and you are rewarded with an interlocking medal for each month you complete, I am aiming for the 100 km option. It's not that I actually like running you understand, but I need to justify my chocolate consumption somehow 😉

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 20.0px 'Apple Color Emoji'}

It was Virtual Runner UK:

virtualrunneruk.com/product...

This is the challenge I signed up to but just discovered I signed up to a 500 mile challenge when I logged in just now, running may be helping me lose weight but it doesn't seem to be helping my dementia!

I liked this one because you can set a different goal each month (25, 50, 100 or 200k), the ribbons will state your selected distance, so if you know you will not be able to get out as much one month you can choose a shorter distance.

Let me know if you decide to do it, would be great to have a little support group for monthly distance challenge in here :)

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Teri73

I like the look of that - although it would end up the most expensive medal on my rack :D I think I will sign up to it too :)

I would quite like to do an annual total distance one as well, but need to think what would be a challenging but realistic distance :)

Teri73 profile image
Teri73 in reply to linda9389

That sounds like a wise move, I am already thinking 500 miles may be too easy if I continue (or hopefully extend) my current weekly mileage, I could be done with that one by August! Ah well, at least a charity is benefitting from my donation :)

I'd quite like a 75k option for the monthly one - being away for a couple of weeks in Jan means 100k is unlikely, but 75k would be a good challenge. Maybe best to start with an easy win :D

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Teri73

I've just signed up for Jan, Feb and March! 50k, 100k and 100k. I like all three charities too which is a bonus :)

Teri73 profile image
Teri73 in reply to linda9389

Well done Linda, the challenge is on! :)

It's great that they support a different charity each month, that way you can support 12 different charities over the year and you are more likely to find yourself supporting a cause you believe in, as you said, it is quite a financial commitment and it is good to know your money is supporting a variety of causes, not just one.

I think I’ve done ok running wise. Done 972 miles this year, not including today, which I’ve not downloaded yet.

My gym stuff got off to a faltering start and has now been postponed due to a hand injury.

Did a marathon, a couple of half marathons, and various other ten milers, 10k’s etc, triple hill challenge, Cardiac hill, and I won three age category prizes, so not a bad year, apart from my recent tumble. It didn't stop me running thank goodness 😁

i fancy having a crack at an ultra next May. Hope to get back into the gym once my hand is better.

I’m still enjoying my running as much as ever and looking forward to a new running year

At the start of the year I had no goal to become a runner.

I did have a goal for my 20 years of marriage to make it to 21, which lasted a whole month. That led to running and starting Couch when the weather lifted some in the spring.

My goal then was to do the next run each time, hence the way I sign off most messages. Then reach 5k. Then feel comfortable at 5k. Then reach 10k. Then get back to 10k again. All achieved. Now work towards HM.

It’s been quite the year.

Enjoy your next run, everyone x

I'm not much of a resolution type person but given I was completely hooked after completely C25k and reaching 10k in November, I decided to set a distance goal. I had ran 348km in 2017, starting C25k at the end of April so I figured 750km would challenge me, but still be attainable for 2018. Well I'm at 686km to date and have a 12k run planned for tomorrow. If I continue to follow my HM plan, I should easily reach my goal this year. I'm still tossing around numbers for next year, but am hoping to reach the HM distance with road running, and will be signing up for a 20k trail race in the fall so am thinking perhaps a 1000km goal for 2019? I'm going to have to get more consistent on crosstraining though I think.

Decker profile image

I turned 50 this year and I had some loose goals I was hoping to reach. First, to finish a HM, which happened in May and then a sub 2hr HM which happened in Oct. (that was a quiet mental goal but still a surprise when it happened along with PBs for 5k and 10k). There were some others like a sub 30 5k and a sub 1hr 10k which happened too, but then you just want to go faster still :). I also set a Garmin distance goal at some point for 1200km, which happened recently. I am at 1435km now, so I think 1500 should be possible. I had wanted to make a few friends through running and I’ve made more than I hoped for both virtually here and in person through my run group. I feel very thankful to have been given this gift of running. I only wish I had found it when I was a bit younger! :) Next in the plan is a 30k in March and then perhaps a marathon later next year if all goes well. Then someday maybe a race in Iceland or Berlin, or Big Sur...

My running resolution was two-fold complete a HM and run a 25min 5k.

In March I copmpleted the eastbourne HM and in October I ran 5k in 25:25.

Along the way I have set more goals and acheived much more - too much to list here. Running has taught me a lot about myself and what I can do with the right mindset.

Next year it is back to the same HM (this time with a target time of 2 hours) and to run a 5k in under 25mins. Other than that I have several races planned. So I just want to keep on running. Oh, and I want to complete 100 push ups.

Hi there,

Well, my goal has been to maintain the fitness achieved in getting to my second HM in March, plus a kilometre total of 900kms run over the year. As my work base is now closer to home I wanted to add in cycling to work once or twice a week......weather permitting.....(i’ll run in anything but cycling.....well - last time I cycled was about 20 years ago....)

My running has been ok, a few 10k events,a10 miler and one more HM making two for the year, I’m on target for my 900km, fingers crossed, just over 50km to go......

Cycling, we’ll have been doing quite well, but I haven’t managed much since the clocks changed, but I will continue to give it a go...

So overall not bad.

If I meet my 900km I will put it up to 1000km for next year, I’ve already got 3 HM’s booked.....Cambridge, Edinburgh and Swansea....as well, and will aim to keep up the cycling.....as long as the work base doesn’t change - I have a love/hate relationship with cycling......I hate it whilst I’m doing it, but love it afterwards.....😂, oh and I’ve started doing yoga, so will aim to keep that up in 2019 too.....

Great achievements and stories all, on we go....onwards, ever onwards....😄

Hi All

I am a bit of a list person so at the beginning of this year I had a long list of races I wanted to do and a few other goals:

I listed 8 HMs I wanted to do, I managed to complete 10

Get my 5km time to sub 30 (sitting on 28:05)

I completed the mapmyrun challenge by running more than 1018km for the year (currently on 1332km)

I wanted to complete a sprint triathlon (doing my third one tomorrow :))

Submit my MSc dissertation (waiting on results)

Dive more! (Been diving most of this week and last at the aquarium as part of a lobster behavior experiment)

and in May decided to enter my first full marathon (completed on 23 Sep)

I did not reach my sub 60 10km due to calf strain injury but managed a 61 so next year will get there. I have managed to maintain my weight this year but still need to lose about 8kg before I reach a healthy BMI.

I am happy with what I have achieved this year and look forward to the challenges next year brings!

I'm not really sure what goals I though of on the lead up to this year, it's been one of upheaval for me 😕house move, partner moving away and a bit of a general "where am I going in life "feeling!! But always the running has been the constant and I am very thankful to discover it back in 2014! So on positives of the year I won a cross country "handicap " 5 mile race and have my name on a cup back in March, I have new pbs for 5/10km and HM, and I've had fun supporting my friend (and boss) through her 1st 10k /10mile and HM races! 😊

I'm now in 4 different run groups ,am better at hills than before but could do with cutting out a few cakes! Still a few more races for this year to keep me on my toes!

I'm the plus side I have beaten my 1000 km total for last year as am on 1070 as of today 😊

My aim next year is to go beyond the 14 miles which is my longest run so far and suss out nutrition and hydration to stop me feeling shonky at the mid to end bit of these longer runs!

I love being part of this supportive community and making new friends and keeping old ones xxx
