So now that I’ve signed up for a 30km run in March, I started poking around for training programs, and with none focused on 30k, I used one for marathon distance. I thought I would begin with an easy training program from Runners world. The only big change for me is running one extra day and you can switch it with cross training if needed. So it is Mon, Tues and Wed of easy short runs and a progressively longer slow long run on Saturdays (16k+). We will see what happens. 🙂 I’ve stuck a copy of the first two weeks in an Evernote checklist on my phone and the first run is checked off now. In the meantime I am still enjoying what’s left of the fall colours here. The pic is of a nearby lake I’ve started running around lately. Beats the cemetery!

New day, new plan
Stunning photo, amazing colours. 30k sounds like quite the challenge to get you through the winter! Good luck with the training
It's exciting to check those first runs off! I've transposed my plan onto a calendar and love marking each completed day off. I was going to get Runkeeper Go to try their Asics training plan but my schedule is so willynilly, I found it easier to modify a plan I found online and work it around my rigid job schedule. Figured there would be less missed runs that way.
Good luck on the new plan and new distance! Look at all those leaves! Embrace the last of the gorgeous fall colours; most of our trees are barren now and snow is back in the forecast this weekend. But we're going to a snowmobile show this weekend, so hubby is super stoked! Last year he came home in a blizzard and hopped right on his sled to test out his new gear 🙄
Sounds like a good plan! It is satisfying to check those runs off eh?
Yes we had a hint of snow yesterday so it wont be long now before we’re swimming in it. Must be good fun snowmobiling in a blizzard! I’ve rented short track stints on some fast cars and a race car once, but never have driven a snowmobile. I bet its a blast!
I really enjoy riding groomed trails (I'm seeing a theme here 😆). We head up north every year to an area with hundreds of miles of groomed trails, through forested areas and great warm up shacks. The trails leads right to our dingy 70's style motel with a great home style restaurant so once we get there the truck doesn't move the entire time. We just travel by snowmobile. The community has really embraced the snowmobilers. It's a holiday we look forward to every year. Our local snowfall the last few years hasn't been great but maybe this year will be better; although less snow is easier for running!
Most marathon plans have a longrun going out to 20 miles - should suit you completely. I have read that the best way for someone to run their first HM is to train for a M , start running an M and then stop half way!! - you will have to wait until the 30 K . Actually it is also said that the starting line for the full marathon is located at the 32 klm mark!!!!
Yes it seemed to make sense and if all goes well with the 30k then I thought I should be in good shape for a full marathon a few months later 🙂
Remember to ask yourself at 30km " Could I honestly run another 12km?" If you can answer "yes" or "yes, just about" or "yes, but it's gonna hurt" then you'll be able run a marathon. I only trained up to 30km twice before my marathon and it was (just) enough. I might train up to 35ish next time as 30 to 40 k was the wilderness zone where my pace fell off a cliff etc.
Beautiful photo. I haven’t seen such bright colours here in my little corner of the world. I think someone forgot about the reds and focussed on yellow, orange and brown.
If the 4th Run gets onerous, or in life’s way, I’d drop it without a second thought. I know I’m older and slower than you but I’ve only ever done 3 runs a week + cross/strength training and have always, with one exception, finished with a good time for that run and in good shape as have others on here. However, as always, if it suits you go for it. And obvs let us know how it’s going.
Yes the trees are fading now. This was the last red tree in the park. Mostly yellows and browns after that.
Actually I realized there are 5 runs per week with two of them optional cross train days. I’ve also only done 3 runs per week till now, with no cross training, so I will likely be switching one or two run days out for cycling or walking We’ll see how it goes.
It's that fourth running day that put me off so many of the HM plans I looked at. There are three day options out there, but good to know I can pick a 4 day plan and just switch the run out for something else
Still mourning the loss of MyAsics plans as they allowed you to switch from 2 - 3 or 4 runs. Haven’t tried the Runkeeper go ones yet (and my free trial will probably be over before I can). Actually, just had a thought 💡(it takes a while for things to sink in 😂) nothing to stop me plugging in some numbers a copying plans! Thanks Linda xx
Me too. And I could not qualify for the free 1 year with runkeeper as I already had an email registered with RK. I think you are onto something there. I had a marathon plan pdf I saved from Asics saved somewhere on my computer. I just need to recall where I saved it...🙄
Wow the challenge is on Decker!! 30km is just short of a 20 mile race here. I don't think I have any close by to me but would be interested if they did. I am a three runs a week kinda girl myself but have been known to hop on the bike from time to time. I even toyed with getting a static bike at home to help the hm training! Good luck with the training, you will be awesome I am sure.
Yes and now there are a group of us headed to this race because our race leader (he’s crazy) is going to run this 30k race then continue to Boston where he qualified. It is around 800km away! He’s planning on a 14 day run to then run Boston!!!
I am also a 3day runner, but tried my mountain bike today which was fun. Cold but fun
Your run leader does sound crazy but that probably spurs you all on too. Hopefully you can all train on the longer runs together. I am envious of the run community you have there. Biking is so much easier on the legs as a runner 😉
30k is a good distance to give an idea of what a marathon involves. You'll smash it.
Decker, you are amazing 😉
That’s all 🙃
I’m in the same boat. I started marathon training before my first half back in the Spring and felt a bit apprehensive towards three consecutive days and the fourth being a long run with the fifth cross training. It turned out l worried over nothing, a lot of good changes came across in the past 1.5y and the body is now much stronger. Once we get this 30K business out of the way it’s show time, we’ve got to nail the big one! My plan is to cover the route of everything associated with vintage rock in London.
Haha you could be a vintage rock London tour guide in your spare time! :). I’m sure you’ll find plenty of takers. 😁 Make sure they run though. Yes I’m not too stressed about it. Now that two HMs are in the bag, I’m just going to take this one run at a time and adjust accordingly.
