Chafing

Well, what fun. During my 16K run this morning l had issues with chafing causing sore, painful nipples. Never had that before, wore my comfy dri-fit top, a bit looser than my tighter gear but still, what the.... Shame, that kinda spoiled a very enjoyable route and a much easier run then l thought it would be given the weather.

Anyways, what do you guys do to prevent it? Just don’t tell me to wear a bra.

Ouchy, I’d say get some bodyglide stat. When I was breastfeeding I used to use something called Lansinoh which is pure lanolin, if you can get some and put it in your nipples they will be better by the morning.

Thank you! Yeah, painful experience. Normally I’d wear my tight dri-fit top and over it I’d put a wider basketball vest. This morning l was wearing just the wide vest which was flapping around my torso cooling me nicely (as intended in basketball) but there was a side effect too. Oh well, put it down to experience..

I contemplated running topless but given the route (along London south bank, via Tate and St Paul’s) and a number of tourists with small children, l decided that they should take less disturbing memories with them...

Ouch! A bra is pretty uncomfortable, so I think a lot of blokes just put plasters over their nipples...

From now on l demand to be known as A Man With Plasters Over His Nipples.

Thankfully I have yet to experience this joy. I have heard though that it can get bad enough that your nipples bleed.......sheesh!

As good a reason as any to never wear a loose shirt whilst running

You haven’t missed much, this morning l still feel both although the pain’s gone. The run was pencilled in back in May and l generally stick to my charts so having seen the weather l went loose. I’ve got an early 5K tomorrow morning and will go back to my tight top and a vanity basketball shirt over it. Will bring the plasters just in case. ;)

Vaseline is cheap and works well to prevent chafing. 👍

My children bought me some "Hello Kitty" plasters for mine...thankfully they don't get involved in pulling them off afterwards tho...

Bodyglide is less messy, but vaseline is as good.

I got Vaseline for my last HM - I was worried about chafing on my thighs and under my arms. It worked a treat (after almost putting toothpaste on my thighs and Vaseline on my toothbrush in the wee hours before the run).

Thank you for that! All I can think of is that's my first longer run without a dri-fit top, the one that's skin-tight around the torso. Even pro footballers wear it under their shirts. Now I know why.

Yes I had to use plasters once. Was grateful until they had to come off :)

Point three in The Runners Temple of Pain manual: The plasters will come off slowly. (cue sombre violin wailing in the background)

Hubby uses plasters during races of 10 k or more, especially since experiencing the joy of bleeding nipples.
