Last long hm training run for 3 weeks.....eek!

So today was my last long run at 11.84 miles (19km) for my hm training as I will be going off to sunny climates. Over the last 4 weeks my long runs have been 12.2 miles, 10 miles, 10.5 miles and 11.84 miles. Today was a slog with poor sleep so I woke up tired. As previously discussed this can affect a run for me. So I summons up my energy mid morning with a hope of 12 miles but anything long would be great. First couple of miles were dogged by niggling shins and left ankle. Why did i decide to rum in compression calf sleeves, was that thr problem? These issues eased at 3 miles so I gave myself short goals to reach to keep motivation. Then at 5 miles I had a left calf niggle which stayed with me all run. I willed myself on until I got home at 11.84 miles, a slog. But this could be how I feel on the day so good practice I guess. So next week I will have an 8 mile long run prior to flying, I don't fancy flying 24 hrs with sore leg muscles. I will have short runs hopefully while away before resuming training until 19th March, event is 22nd April. I just hope I do not lose fitness!

Well done, you are doing brilliantly and I'm sure the break Down Under will do you nothing but good!

When you got the calf/ankle niggles did you stop and give them a bit of a stretch/wiggle? I am getting the impression that you are ploughing through these runs without any breaks (?). Regarding the compression sleeves, as you know I am inexperienced, but I wouldn't be surprised if the extra tightness could cause discomfort if you're not used to wearing them. Good idea to avoid flying with sore legs!

p.s. threonine? :D

Thanks, yes I did some stretches while I waited at traffic lights but the niggles were still there . The left ankle is an old injury that on some runs feels like aches from 1-3miles then goes, random I know. My physio has given me some exercises for it and hip strengthening for my si joint stiffness. Some run days my ankle is no problem at all. I think that my legs are tired from 4 weeks of training so a break may be good for them. The compression sleeves may have contributed but it was not easy to take them off during the run. I usually wear them post run for recovery. I guess that is a lesson learned. Btw I have no idea about the random tag 🤔

Way to go RFD! - you seem well prepped. That is weird about the calf sleeves and the niggles - They seemed ok for me, but that was just one run and I still don't know what I am doing. :) Sometimes I get a short pain in the knee, and then change my angle ever so slightly and it goes away - most of it seems to happen in the first 3k or so - these joints are complex things I guess. And like you say, its a good test for the day. Maybe the warmer clime will help that out?

Thanks Decker, it still feels a slog so I don't feel as prepared as I would like! You have been training well too. I love my compression socks post run, in fact I am wearing them now 😄 so I think they help with my recover. The sleeves are tight-ish at the ankle so maybe that was irritating it. As long as my niggles go away after a shortish distance I can cope.

I think you will do great - you have certainly put in the miles. I'm just killing time now - really should have done the HM in March - ah well. :) Yes my sleeves are really tight too - one of the reviewers had a problem with tearing them when removing, so I've been careful so far. Hope the niggles stay minor!

Legs are feeling good today, no real aches although I managed to bruise a couple of toes post run! Calf compression socks are great! Quads burnt a bit after walking up 6 flights of stairs but I guess that is to be expected.

I checked my garmin and on top of my 11.84 mile run yesterday I did a total of 19.5 miles on my feet walking the dog, school run, trip to gp, trip to hairdressers with the girls etc.

Wow that is a huge distance to cover including 6 flights of stairs! No wonder the quads felt burnt:) Well done. Pretty sure you’ve earned the day off from EVERYTHING tomorrow!

You won’t lose fitness if you do a bit on holiday. Being on hols should give a boost to your runs if you can get some in. It’s your holiday too, so that’s the deal 😃 sightseeing runs are great, you can do some stop/start to take pics 🙂

On our runs, especially long ones, try and zone out a bit or you focus on every little body niggle. Turn it on its head and focus on the positives, eg I’m an eighth of the way in. When you check again, seemingly in a few minutes, you’re a quarter of the way in 💪🏃‍♀️

You might get more chance to swim as well so that’s good If you’re by the sea you could do some sea walking to give your legs some good therapy.

Have fun. Come back refreshed mentally and physically 👍😃

Heyup, would you like to have your half marathon listed on our Events calendar?

in reply toroseabi

That means it becomes official! It is the southampton half on 22 April, a busy day in London I believe 😉

That date rings a bell 😃

Sunday 22nd April 2018 The Longhorn 10k at Thoresby Hall, Notts. Myself, Murph, if signed fit, maybe Mike and Rita?

I doubt it - I had a similar break before my 10 miler back in October and it didn’t do any harm. Keep it ticking over when you can, like others have said. Excited for you! 😀

in reply toGabby08

Thank you, that's good to hear that a break did not affect your 10 miler. It is unchartered water for me!!
