14 and still standing...

Ran 14 miles yesterday for a long run, which was pleasing as I’m now getting confident I can cover the HM distance. Booking into a couple of charity runs over the next couple of months including a HM. Well pleased. Two questions though, first could someone explain the best way to incorporate Hill repress into training and how should one taper properly before an organised run. Cheers 🏃🏼

18 km could be your longest training run, and once nailed, that will be far enough before the big day

I don’t do hill as such as I like to keep going, but I do a series of hills instead

Someone else here will know though

Taper wise, you have a taper Fortnight, leading up to race day , whereby you are running, but not far as you cut back on the mileage to save yourself for the event

Mine looks like this:-

Sunday 11th. 5k jog

Monday 12th. 8k race pace

Thursday 15th 8k race pace

Saturday 17th 5k jog

Monday 19th 8k build up pace, which is faster than jog pace but slower than race pace

Thursday 22nd 5k jog

Saturday 24th Race Day!

Hope that helps 👍

When I do hill repeats which I should do more often.

1. Find a short'ish but steep hill.

2. Run to the hill to get nicely warmed up at least 2km.

3. I run up the hill at my normal pace, and then walk down.

4. Run up the hill faster and then walk down.

5. Run up the hill as fast as you can walk down.

6. Do a least 2km cool down.

As you get fitter faster you can do more repeats, find a steeper hill or longer. I would then do this once a week with the other days, doing a intervals and a long run. Which would make up 3 runs per week.

As for taper what she said ^

I can’t bear doing these, they do my head in 😁

Fortunately, near me I have three streets which are in rows. I have to run a hill to get to it, then run up each one, down it, and then up next but it’s another hill, not the same one! I like to make progress so doing repeats seems like regression to me. I know it’s daft but I like to crack on Hills to the left of me, hills to the right, here i am ,stuck in the middle with yooooo 🎶🎵

Says she that ran a multiple lap marathon ☺️😎

Lots of great advice here. I would also add not to do too much cardio at the gym on your taper. I found it made a big difference to cut out my spinning and bodypump classes the week before...
